Book Synopsis Toward a Literacy of Promise by : Linda A. Spears-Bunton
Download or read book Toward a Literacy of Promise written by Linda A. Spears-Bunton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[This book] gives us strategies for bringing life back to school; it allows us to think creatively about connecting instruction to the lives of children who have not been well-served; it helps us learn to value the gifts with words our children of color bring; and it gives us hope for educating a generation that can change the status quo, that will build the America we have yet to see...the one that made that as-yet-unfulfilled promise of ‘liberty and justice for all.’" Lisa Delpit, From the Foreword Toward a Literacy of Promise examines popular assumptions about literacy and challenges readers to question how it has been used historically both to empower and to oppress. The authors offer an alternative view of literacy – a "literacy of promise" – that charts an emancipatory agenda for literacy instructional practices in schools. Weaving together critical perspectives on pedagogy, language, literature, and popular texts, each chapter provides an in-depth discussion that illuminates how a literacy of promise can be realized in school and classrooms. Although the major focus is on African American middle and secondary students as a population that has experienced the consequences of inequality, the chapters demonstrate general and specific applications to other populations.
Download or read book Demystify Sin 5.0 written by Ola Faseku and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enemy is among us, waging a war of world political domination against us. We must fight to strike it at its core, or else we will be in serious trouble. The Demystify Sin spiritual manual series deals with a simple brand of truth that exposes the deep darkness and equips us to overcome it in our objective reality. It discusses practical techniques to help us stand on our feet spiritually. This volume explores spiritual dynamics leading to a clear and potentially grave destination as predefined in the Word of God. It serves as the Spirit of God shining the light of the Word into the darkness, revealing the enemy at work, and it offers ways to defend ourselves against that enemy. God has called and appointed author Ola Faseku to undermine and expose the darkness, and Jesus Christ gave him wisdom, revelation, knowledge, and understanding of scriptures and the times, which he shares as truth without fear. This spiritual guide tells how we will deal with the antichrist and his war that is in progress; how we will contain and dismantle Babylon: satan’s kingdom of darkness on earth.

When Colin's not busy with assassins and his own inner demons, there's amnesia potions and odd jobs like hunting down a serial criminal or two. If the billionaire boss was bad, the relationship between Colin and his demon-blooded girlfriend Veruca has been downright turbulent since last winter's freak blizzard. It doesn't make the situation any easier that his favorite FBI contact looks exactly like his missing, presumed dead, fiancée. All of that would be enough to keep Colin busy. But when a dangerous gambler with magical powers of his own, and his demoness consort, start fleecing Vegas casinos for millions, Colin finds himself trapped in a high stakes game of two wizard roulette. “Building on the story begun in Frostbite, Bader delivers another urban fantasy home run….The book boasts both sharp wit and beautifully crafted emotional depth, and it’s extremely easy to fall headlong into the story.”—Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

Download or read book Special Assignments written by Boris Akunin and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2008-02-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Special Assignments, Erast Fandorin, nineteenth-century Russia’s suavest sleuth, faces two formidable new foes: One steals outrageous sums of money, the other takes lives. “The Jack of Spades” is a civilized swindler who has conned thousands of rubles from Moscow’s residents–including Fandorin’s own boss, Prince Dolgorukoi. To catch him, Fandorin and his new assistant, timid young policeman Anisii Tulipov, must don almost as many disguises as the grifter does himself. “The Decorator” is a different case altogether: A savage serial killer who believes he “cleans” the women he mutilates and takes his orders from on high, he must be given Fandorin’s most serious attentions. Peopled by a rich cast of eccentric characters, and with plots that are as surprising as they are inventive, Special Assignments will delight Akunin’s many fans, while challenging the gentleman sleuth’s brilliant powers of detection. Praise from England: “Boris Akunin’s wit and invention are a source of constant wonder.” –Evening Standard “[Fandorin is] a debonair combo of Sherlock Holmes, D’Artagnan and most of the soulful heroes of Russian literature. . . . This pair of perfectly balanced stories permit the character of Fandorin to grow.” –The Sunday Telegraph “Agatha Christie meets James Bond: [Akunin’s] plots are intricate and tantalizing. . . . [These stories] are unputdownable and great fun.” –Sunday Express “The beguiling, super-brainy, sexy, unpredictable Fandorin is a creation like no other in crime fiction.” –The Times
Book Synopsis A Concordance of the Qur'an by : Hanna E. Kassis
Download or read book A Concordance of the Qur'an written by Hanna E. Kassis and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-03 with total page 1486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword This Concordance of the Qur'an in English satisfies a paramount need of those—and there are millions of them—who have no command of the Arabic language and yet desire to understand the Qur'an. The benefit derivable from English translations of the Sacred Book is, in principle, limited because, first, the Qur'an is not a "book" but a collection of passages revealed to Muhammad over a period of about twenty-three years and, second, because the Qur'an is not really translatable. This does not mean that the Qur'an should not be translated. It does mean that translations lose much in tone and nuance, let alone the incommunicable beauty, grandeur, and grace of the original. . . . The main distinction of Hana Kassis's concordance, in my view, is that it utilizes the semantic structure of Arabic vocabulary itself in revealing the meaning of the Qur'an on any given issue, point or concept. A reader who looks in the index of this concordance for a word which he has encountered in reading an English translation of the Qur'an—the word pride, for example—is directed immediately to the roots of the Arabic, Qur'anic terms for pride. At tne entries for these Arabic roots, all the derivative forms are shown, and the verses of the Qur'an in which they appear are there listed in translation. . . . I am confident that any person who is sincerely interested in understanding the Qur'an and appreciating the nuances of its diction and shades of its meaning can satisfy his need more fully with this book than in any way short of developing a real command over the Arabic language itself. —Fazlur Rahman, Professor of Islamic Thought, University of Chicago
