Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: See Jack worship; Pray, pray, pray! “Please make me holy, Lord, But not today.” Could it be that God sometimes uses humor to teach us? Here are some raucous rhymes for reflection that will poke and prod at the propriety of our piety. We Americans often wave our Christian credentials around the world, while at the same time being naughty to our neighbors, mired in materialism, and jarringly juvenile. In the style of basal readers, this book takes a swipe at hypocrisy. More than a parody of “See Dick and Jane! Run Spot run!” it invites readers to increase their awareness of the values that make our world a troubled place to be. Read, readers, read! Read every letter. Deep down inside, we can be better!

Book excerpt: Inside this short book, written in the wake of President Reagan’s adoption of Mr. LaRouche’s Beam Defense policy, you will find the philosophical principles of republican statecraft which have entirely reshaped the world over the course of Mr. LaRouche’s lifelong effort to raise the level of civilization up to the level of mankind’s potential. Once collapsed societies, such as China and Russia, have used Mr. LaRouche’s principles along with indigenous cultural strengths to transform themselves into centers of progress and optimism. Even in the United States of America itself, where incredible efforts were made by British Imperial and allied oligarchical rentier-financier interests to entirely suppress republican ideas of science and progress along with all other aspects of LaRouche’s influence, we now begin to see the final triumph of his ideas. So, as you read this book, remember that while many of the particulars of the world situation of 1983 described in this book, such as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, for example, no longer exist, remember that it was the ideas contained within this book and other actions and writings by Mr. LaRouche which lay the basis for the positive transformation in world affairs we see today. While circumstances in the world have changed, Mr. LaRouche’s ideas are of a permanent universal character. The more we act to bring American foreign policy into conformity with those principles, the better will be the future of the American republic and the future of mankind in general.

Book excerpt: Shinners, dissos, and dissenters is a long-term analysis of the development of Irish republican media activism since 1998 and the tumultuous years that followed the end of the Troubles. It is the first in-depth analysis of the newspapers, magazines and online spaces in which strands of Irish republicanism developed and were articulated in a period in which schism and dissent underscored a return to violence for dissidents. Based on an analysis of Irish republican media outlets as well as interviews with the key activists that produced them, this book provides a compelling snap shot of a political ideology in transition as it is moulded by the forces of the Peace Process and often violent internal ideological schism that threatened a return to the 'bad old days' of the Troubles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A suicide scandal in Shanghai reveals the social fault lines of democratic visions in China’s troubled Republic in the early 1920s. On September 8, 1922, the body of Xi Shangzhen was found hanging in the Shanghai newspaper office where she worked. Although her death occurred outside of Chinese jurisdiction, her US-educated employer, Tang Jiezhi, was kidnapped by Chinese authorities and put on trial. In the unfolding scandal, novelists, filmmakers, suffragists, reformers, and even a founding member of the Chinese Communist Party seized upon the case as emblematic of deep social problems. Xi’s family claimed that Tang had pressured her to be his concubine; his conviction instead for financial fraud only stirred further controversy. The creation of a republic ten years earlier had inspired a vision of popular sovereignty and citizenship premised upon gender equality and legal reform. After the quick suppression of the first Chinese parliament, commercial circles took up the banner of democracy in their pursuit of wealth. But, Bryna Goodman shows, the suicide of an educated “new woman” exposed the emptiness of republican democracy after a flash of speculative finance gripped the city. In the shadow of economic crisis, Tang’s trial also exposed the frailty of legal mechanisms in a political landscape fragmented by warlords and enclaves of foreign colonial rule. The Suicide of Miss Xi opens a window onto how urban Chinese in the early twentieth century navigated China’s early passage through democratic populism, in an ill-fated moment of possibility between empire and party dictatorship. Xi Shangzhen became a symbol of the failures of the Chinese Republic as well as the broken promises of citizen’s rights, gender equality, and financial prosperity betokened by liberal democracy and capitalism.

Book excerpt: Who says facts can't be fun? This book was written for those who are of a conservative mind set but are still wandering aimlessly in the world of politics and do not have a clue as to the policies, missions and distinct differences between the Democratic and Republican parties. Infusing sarcastic political satire into the fray, the author has created a manifesto which is quite humorous yet extremely informative. An absolute must for those who have their hearts in the right place but have the political I.Q. of a salamander!

Book excerpt: The Indianapolis ABCs were formed around the turn of the century, playing company teams from around the city; they soon played other teams in Indiana, including some white teams. Their emergence coincided with the remarkable growth of black baseball, and by 1916 the ABCs won their first major championship. When the Negro National League was formed in 1920, Indianapolis was one of its charter members. But player raids by the Eastern Colored League, formed in 1923, hurt the ABCs and by the Depression the team was fading into oblivion. The team was briefly resurrected as a Negro league team in the late 1930s, but was otherwise relegated to the semiprofessional ranks until its demise in the 1940s. Through contemporary newspaper accounts, extensive research and interviews with the few former ABC players still living, this is the story of the Indianapolis team and the rise of Negro League baseball. The work includes a roster of ABC players, with short biographies of the most prominent.

However, while the supply could be there for nursing students to meet the high demand for nurses, few rarely know the immense pressures of nursing school, the coursework, the standardized exams such as the HESI, the Exit HESI, and finally the dreaded NCLEX-RN exam. Nursing takes a tremendous mental, physical, and emotional toll on future nurses both inside and outside of the classroom setting. Therefore, who is better to write a study guide using two prominent nursing text books on both the EXIT HESI and the NCLEX-RN exam, than a former MSN, CNL student herself. The textbooks are “Saunders Comprehensive NCLEX-RN examination” by Silvestri, the 7th edition and “HESI Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination” by Al-Arabi, Cuellar, Dufrene, Garner, Jemison, Law, Leland, Pine, and Ralph, the 5th edition. This study guide version of these two popular Nursing textbooks will benefit nursing students who need one clear and concise resource that will meet their needs. Additionally, this book includes HESI hints and pyramid points that are highlighted throughout the book and chapters on Personal Nutrition and Fitness, and Mental Health and Wellness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The market for print steadily expanded throughout the eighteenth-century Atlantic world thanks to printers' efforts to ensure that ordinary people knew how to read and use printed matter. Reading is and was a collection of practices, performed in diverse, but always very specific ways. These practices were spread down the social hierarchy through printed guides. Eve Tavor Bannet explores guides to six manners or methods of reading, each with its own social, economic, commercial, intellectual and pedagogical functions, and each promoting a variety of fragmentary and discontinuous reading practices. The increasingly widespread production of periodicals, pamphlets, prefaces, conduct books, conversation-pieces and fictions, together with schoolbooks designed for adults and children, disseminated all that people of all ages and ranks might need or wish to know about reading, and prepared them for new jobs and roles both in Britain and America.
