Book Synopsis Writing the Digital History of Nazi Germany by : Julia Timpe
Download or read book Writing the Digital History of Nazi Germany written by Julia Timpe and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do scholarship and practices of remembrance regarding Nazi Germany benefit from digital tools and approaches? What challenges arise from "doing history digitally" in this field – and how should they best be dealt with? The eight chapters of this book explore these and related questions. They discuss the digital initiatives of various archives and source databases, highlight findings of research undertaken with digital tools, and examine how such tools can be used to present history in education, exhibitions and memorials. All contributions focus on recent or, in some cases, ongoing digital projects related to the history of National Socialism, World War II, and the Holocaust.
Book Synopsis Environmental Applications of Digital Terrain Modeling by : John P. Wilson
Download or read book Environmental Applications of Digital Terrain Modeling written by John P. Wilson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A digital elevation model (DEM) is a digital representation of ground surface topography or terrain. It is also widely known as a digital terrain model (DTM). A DEM can be represented as a raster (a grid of squares) or as a vector based triangular irregular network (TIN). DEMs are commonly built using remote sensing techniques, but they may also be built from land surveying. DEMs are used often in geographic information systems, and are the most common basis for digitally-produced relief maps. The terrain surface can be described as compromising of two different elements; random and systematic. The random (stochastic) elements are the continuous surfaces with continuously varying relief. It would take an endless number of points to describe exactly the random terrain shapes, but these can be described in practice with a network of point. It is usual to use a network that creates sloping triangles or regular quadrants. This book examines how the methods and data sources used to generate DEMs and calculate land surface parameters have changed over the past 25 years. The primary goal is to describe the state-of-the-art for a typical digital terrain modeling workflow that starts with data capture, continues with data preprocessing and DEM generation, and concludes with the calculation of one or more primary and secondary land surface parameters. Taken as a whole, this book covers the basic theory behind the methods, the instrumentation, analysis and interpretation that are embedded in the modern digital terrain modeling workflow, the strengths and weaknesses of the various methods that the terrain analyst must choose among, typical applications of the results emanating from these terrain modeling workflows, and future directions. This book is intended for researchers and practitioners who wish to use DEMs, land surface parameters, land surface objects and landforms in environmental projects. The book will also be valuable as a reference text for environmental scientists who are specialists in related fields and wish to integrate these kinds of digital terrain workflows and outputs into their own specialized work environments.

Book Synopsis Quaternary Glaciation of the Great Lakes Region by : Alan Kehew
Download or read book Quaternary Glaciation of the Great Lakes Region written by Alan Kehew and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2018 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking advantage of new technological advances in Quaternary geology and geomorphology, this volume showcases new developments in glacial geology. Honoring the legacy of Frank Leverett and F.B. Taylor's 1915 USGS monograph of the region, this book includes 12 chapters that cover diverse topics ranging from hydrogeology, near-surface geophysics, geotectonics, and vertebrate paleontology to glacial geomorphology and glacial history. Several papers make use of detailed but nuanced shaded relief maps of digital elevation models of LiDAR data; these advances are brought into historical perspective by visiting the history of geologic mapping of Michigan. Looking forward, interpretations of the shaded relief maps evoke novel processes, such as regional evolution of subglacial and supraglacial drainage systems of receding glacial margins. The volume also includes assessment of chronological issues in light of greater accuracy and precision of radiocarbon dating of plant fossils using accelerator mass spectrometry versus older techniques.

Book Synopsis Intelligent Computing Systems by : George A. Tsihrintzis
Download or read book Intelligent Computing Systems written by George A. Tsihrintzis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-10 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book at hand explores emerging scientific and technological areas in which Intelligent Computing Systems provide efficient solutions and, thus, may play a role in the years to come. It demonstrates how Intelligent Computing Systems make use of computational methodologies that mimic nature-inspired processes to address real world problems of high complexity for which exact mathematical solutions, based on physical and statistical modelling, are intractable. Common intelligent computational methodologies are presented including artificial neural networks, evolutionary computation, genetic algorithms, artificial immune systems, fuzzy logic, swarm intelligence, artificial life, virtual worlds and hybrid methodologies based on combinations of the previous. The book will be useful to researchers, practitioners and graduate students dealing with mathematically-intractable problems. It is intended for both the expert/researcher in the field of Intelligent Computing Systems, as well as for the general reader in the fields of Artificial and Computational Intelligence who wishes to learn more about the field of Intelligent Computing Systems and its applications. An extensive list of bibliographic references at the end of each chapter guides the reader to probe further into application area of interest to him/her.

Book Synopsis Soil, Water and Air Program Highlights Fiscal Year 2015 by : Bureau of Land Management
Download or read book Soil, Water and Air Program Highlights Fiscal Year 2015 written by Bureau of Land Management and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2017-05-03 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for more than 245 million acres of public land--about 10 percent of the nation's surface land area. This land is primarily located in 12 Western States, including Alaska. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The BLM accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. Soil, water, and air resources are the most foundational and basic of natural resources. Soil, water, and air processes determine, to a large extent, the structure and function of ecosystems.
