Book excerpt: Liz Lemon, Jack Donaghy, and the cast of TGS are featured on these unofficial fan-created playing cards. Imagine playing a round of Texas Hold 'Em, but when you reveal your hand, there are the friendly faces of TGS's cast and crew, the characters of 30 Rock! Well, imagine no longer - just pick up your set of 30 Rock Playing Cards. It's been over seven years since the show ended, but stellar writing (helmed by Tina Fey), incredible casting, and sheer quotability has meant that we're all still in love with 30 Rock. The sidesplitting sitcom is also an exploration of work-life balances, friendships, and love. Printed on high-quality card material, this deck is a standard poker set, with the four classic suits. Each suit celebrates a pair of our favorite 30 Rock characters. Liz Lemon, master of avoiding jury duty, is clubs. High-powered executive Jack Donaghy, whose suit is more expensive than yours, is spades. Jenna Maroney, a certified 10, is hearts, while Tracy is the suit of diamonds (and also a big fan of Shark Week). Kenneth Parcell graces the joker cards, because obviously he does.

Book excerpt: The hilarious true story of the making of the cult classic hit show 30 Rock It’s hard to remember a time when Tina Fey wasn’t a star, but back in the early 2000s, she was an SNL writer who was far from a household name. It’s even harder to remember when Fey’s sitcom 30 Rock was tanking, but it was—it premiered in the fall of 2006, and by November, the New York Times wrote that 30 Rock was “perilously close to a flop.” But despite all expectations (including those of some of the cast and crew), Tina Fey’s eccentric buddy comedy lasted 138 episodes, spanning seven seasons. It resurrected the career of Alec Baldwin, survived an extended absence by Tracy Morgan, and permeated the culture— its breakneck pacing, oddball characters, and extremely rich joke writing are deeply beloved by millions of fans. Through more than fifty original interviews with cast, crew, critics, and more, culture writer Mike Roe brings to life the history of the gloriously goofy show that became an all-time classic. The 30 Rock Book has everything in it, from tales of the amazing music still stuck in our heads, to the iconic bit characters that make the show, to all the love and drama of the backstage crew . . . and the creative failures and successes along the way. So grab your night cheese and muffin tops, cuddle up with your slanket against your Japanese body pillow, and settle in for the story of one of the funniest shows in television history.

Book excerpt: The outrageously funny, heartbreaking, and surprising story of Tracy Morgan's rise from ghetto wiseass to superstar comedian. Who is Tracy Morgan? The wildly unpredictable funnyman who rocketed to fame on Saturday Night Live? The Emmy-nominated actor behind the sly and ingenious character Tracy Jordan on the award-winning hit sitcom 30 Rock, whose turbulent personal life often mirrors that of his fictional alter ego? Is he Chico Divine, the life of the party–any party, anytime, anywhere–getting ladies pregnant everywhere he goes? Or is he a soulful, tender family man who emerged from a hardscrabble ghetto upbringing and, against all odds, achieved superstardom, raised a solid family, prevailed over a collection of lethal bad habits, and is still ascending new heights and coming into his own? The answer is: Tracy Morgan is all that. And a bag of potato chips with a 50¢ soda. When he was just a boy living in the Tompkins Projects in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, being funny was about survival. With the right snap, Tracy could shut down the playground bullies who picked on him and his physically disabled older brother. And with a wild enough prank, he could exact revenge on whoever stole his Pumas at the community pool. Later, being funny was about escape–from the untouchable sadness of his father's death, from the desperation of the drug dealer's trade, from the life-and-death battles waged on the streets of the South Bronx in the age of crack. But these days being funny is about living his dream–a dream born in the comedy clubs of Harlem and realized on shows like Martin and Saturday Night Live, where he was a cast member for seven years, and in movies like The Longest Yard and Half-Baked. With brutal honesty and his trademark take-no-prisoners humor, Tracy tells the story of his rise to fame, with all its highs and its many lows–from the very public battles with alcohol and diabetes that threatened both his career and his life to the private and poignant end of his twenty-year marriage. In his singularly warped and brilliant way he muses on family, love, sex, race, politics, ambition, and what it takes to bring the funny. Hilarious, inspiring, searing, and touching, I Am the New Black is a fascinating peek inside the minds of one of the most compelling and defining comedians of our time.

Book excerpt: A book of hilarious and ingenious comic drawings from the popular 30 Rock star and "World Champion" comedian Judah Friedlander, hailed by Tina Fey as "one of the all-time great weirdos." Most Americans know Judah Friedlander from his role as Frank Rossitano on 30 Rock and from appearances in films like American Splendor and The Wrestler. But long before he became a film and TV star and stand-up comic Friedlander drew stuff. Now, in this quirky, hilarious, and surprisingly profound collection of drawings, Friedlander shows a new side to his "terrifically entertaining" (New York Times) comedy. Whether imagining George Washington in Las Vegas, plastic surgery for imperfect triangles, and the Keystone Pipeline as a sex act, Friedlander's "Joodles" push boundaries as they explore the absurdities of American life, sex, and even history and human rights. If the Raindrops United is a milestone in the career of one of America's most inventive comedians. Praise for If the Raindrops United: "Judah has drawn a weird and funny book in the grand '70s tradition of B. Kliban! I think this book will probably fix the world." -- Tina Fey "Some people meditate. Some people masturbate. But if you don't have the time or patience for either of those, I recommend reading If the Raindrops United to calm down, have a little laugh, or a big think." -- Susan Sarandon "I've known Judah for many years and I still don't understand how his mind works, but it sure works. Seriously strange. Seriously funny. A National Treasure. Sadly, I need to get a restraining order against him." -- Paul Giamatti "Judah thank you for writing a funny twisted book. It is such an easy read. Even dum dums like me can enjoy it!!! Buy this book." -- Dave Attell "Judah's drawings are deceptively simple, yet they become more compelling with every page. His talent as an actor/writer/comedian is further conveyed in ANOTHER medium. He's a Quadruple Threat. He wears many hats. Literally." -- Janeane Garofalo "Reading Judah Friedlander's new book is a lot like hanging out with Judah himself: occasionally baffling, frequently thought-provoking, but, most of all, consistently hilarious!" --Mick Foley "To compare Judah Friedlander to a great cartoonist like Jim Davis would be a compliment to Jim Davis." -- Wyatt Cenac "Another hit from The World Champ tackling the signs and symbols you frequently question while dropping hot lava in your American Standard VorMax." -- Eddie Huang

Listen to any Zeppelin album, and you will hear a virtual showcase on expert rock drumming - while never getting in the way of the group's other members and their contributions, singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, and bassist John Paul Jones. But sadly, one of rock's all-time greats died tragically young - he was only 32 years old - resulting in the end of one of rock's most celebrated bands. To mark 40 years since his passing, 'Bonzo: 30 Rock Drummers Remember the Legendary John Bonham' has been assembled - comprised of interviews with some of the top drummers of rock (including Kenny Aronoff, Mike Portnoy, John Dolmayan, Brian Tichy, and Steve Gorman, among others), discussing what made Bonham such a special and unforgettable drummer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK 30 Rock is an NBC television series that has ruled Thursday nights in a way no half-hour sitcom has since the days of Friends. Created by former Saturday Night Live head writer and Weekend Update anchor Tina Fey, the show initially had trouble finding an audience. That changed practically overnight after Fey returned to SNL to play then-vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin with whom Fey shares a resemblance. The show, now in its sixth season, has won many awards and continued to dominate televisions comedy genre. After garnering critical and commercial success for her work on SNL, Tina Fey surprised many in the television world by leaving the venerable sketch comedy show show in May of 2006 to work on her own NBC sitcom called 30 Rock. The show was inspired by Tinas own experience working as a writer on SNL, with 30 Rock about the behind-the-scenes craziness of an NBC late night sketch comedy show. MEET THE AUTHOR Kent Page McGroarty is a freelance writer. She is a frequent lifestyle contributor to online magazine EDGE Publications and Demand Media sites LIVESTRONG.com, eHow Home and Garden and Local.com. Kent also works as a blogger and copywriter, including for her own site, A Natural Day.net. She has a B.A. in English from Saint Joseph's University. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK 30 Rock follows the life of 30-something Liz Lemon (Tina Fey), the head writer of The Girlie Show, a Saturday Night Live-type show filmed at NBCs 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York. When the series begins, Liz has been informed of the death of her old boss and his subsequent replacement, the business-minded Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin). Jack has little experience producing television shows as he has previously worked in GEs corporate offices only, though GE owns NBC. He is initially unconcerned with the show as he oversees numerous other projects, but realizes he needs to drastically change The Girlie Show if the show is to remain on the air. Jack therefore hires Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan), a movie actor known for running through the streets of New York in his underwear among many other random acts of goofiness. Liz is against the hiring the minute Jack mentions the idea because she knows Tracy is insane, but Jack goes ahead and hires Tracy, anyway. Liz realizes the veins of Girlie Show star, Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski), will explode at the thought of another actor coming in to proverbially throw up all over her spotlight. But, Liz promises Jenna she will take care of it. Taking care of it doesnt go so well when Jack re-names the show TGS With Tracy Jordan. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK The fourth season of 30 Rock, the brainchild of award-winning writer and actress Tina Fey, lives up to its reputation as a critical darling with a hardcore fan-base. 30 Rock, a three-time Emmy winner for Outstanding Comedy Series, returns with a 22-episode season continues to look behind the scenes of a Saturday Night Live-style comedy sketch show. Fey, an alum of SNL lives in New York, and the show is shot on location in Manhattan and at a studio in Long Island City. Fey first pitched the sitcom to NBC when she was the head writer for SNL in 2002. The original concept was in a cable-news setting, but she changed the focus to more familiar ground after discussions with the network. She remained as the head writer and a performer on the show until 30 Rock debuted in 2006. MEET THE AUTHOR Linda is a professional journalist with over 20 years of experience. Her first book, Hexes for Exes, was published in 2007 and is available everywhere fine books are sold! EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The fourth season of 30 Rock follows two main story arcs as the latest season of The Girlie Show (TSG) with Tracy Jordan begins. It begins with the search and hiring of a new actor for the show, and delves into the personal life of head writer Liz Lemon and her search for what she wants in a man. As the season opens, executive Jack Donaghy is worried TGS is failing to connect with middle America, the people he calls real Americans. Jack feels his cast and crew have lost touch with their roots and have become too elite to know what flyover country finds funny. As usual, 30 Rock touches on major themes percolating in American society. At the time of its original prime time run in NBC (2009-10), the country was in a period of political upheaval. It was a year into the presidency of Barack Obama, and a serious backlash about taking back the country was forming in much of middle America. It was framed by the media and the right wing as the elite vs. real Americans. These themes are clearly indicated with 30 Rocks early storylines in the fourth season. Liz ventures out of her East Coast liberal cocoon in search of an actor who will satisfy Jacks desire for a new actor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK If Tina Fey is the mother of 30 Rock, Lorne Michaels, the creator and executive producer of Saturday Night Live, is the shows father. In Feys eighth season at SNL, Michaels prodded her to do a development deal for a sitcom. Tina consequently brainstormed the narrative of a television producer who works for the show of a right-wing pontificator, a role Fey had already written for Alec Baldwin. Kevin Reilly, NBC president of Primetime Development, sent Tina back to the drawing board with the suggestion that she incorporate elements of her own life into her show. Tina then created a story of a late-night comedy show, in which she would play the head writer, Tracy Morgan would play the role of the star, and Alec Baldwin, naturally, as the boss. MEET THE AUTHOR Davanna has a life-long love of literature. She is a copy editor and copywriter, writes fiction and poetry, and has a law degree. She lives on the Gulf Coast of Florida. She has three sons, and a Brittany named Jubal. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK If there is onemaybe twooverarching, profound themes to the apparently absurdist plotlines of the episodes of the third season of 30 Rock, one would be hard-pressed to find them. But lets give it a try, since after all, there must be some kind of glue which holds together this comedic cauldron of seething jealousy (Jenna, of everyone), control freak-exertion (Jack, over Tina, and Tinas futile efforts over Tracy and Jenna), and sexual tension. No one in the cast seems to be attracted to anyone else, since that would be incestuous. But cast members do become extremely attracted to outsiders: Liz to Dr. Andrew Baird, played by the gorgeous Jon Hamm; Jack to Elisa Pedrera, played by the gorgeous Salma Hayek; Kenneth to the adorable, red-headed, blind girl played by the adorable, red-headed actress; and Jenna to the EMT who responds to an emergency call at TGSin the pursuit of whom she has no qualms in inducing anaphylactic shock in Kenneth. In a twist reminiscent of Isaac willingly (?) sacrificing himself at Abrahams hand, Kenneth courts death so that Jenna may re-encounter the EMT of her dreams.
