Book Synopsis Narrative of the Campaigns of the 28th Regiment by : Major Charles Cadell
Download or read book Narrative of the Campaigns of the 28th Regiment written by Major Charles Cadell and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Gloucestershire, or 28th Regiment of Foot, had a long and honourable list of successes during the Napoleonic Wars: they were engaged at Coruña, Talavera, Albuera, Vittoria, the Pyrenees, the Nive and the Nivelle, and were conspicuous during the Waterloo Campaign at both Quatre Bras and the era-defining battle. Captain Cadell (as he was at that time) served throughout the period, and his memoirs are filled with the hard engagements with the enemy. He commanded the company of grenadiers of the 1st battalion and was at the cutting edge of all the fighting. His writing style is lucid, filled with memorable anecdotes of the action, and often asides about the men under his command. An excellent memoir of a hard-fighting regimental officer. Author — Major Charles Cadell (1786-1866)
Book Synopsis The First Battalion of the 28th Marines on Iwo Jima by : Robert E. Allen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 19, 1945, seven battalions of U.S. Marines landed on the eastern beaches of Iwo Jima. On the southernmost flank, in the shadows of Suribachi, the First Battalion, 28th Marines, stormed ashore into the bloodiest and most renowned of all battles fought by the U.S. Marine Corps. Thirty-six days later, the Marines overran the “Bloody Gorge” and dislodged the last enemy holdouts. The battle was over, but at great cost: 225 of the First Battalion’s men died on Iwo Jima. Based on official reports and personal accounts, this is a day-by-day history of the First Battalion, 28th Marines, on Iwo Jima. Each chapter presents an overview of that day’s combat and other relevant events, and also contains the text of that day’s official regimental and battalion narratives. The text is complemented by a chronology and transcribed muster rolls for February and March 1945.

Just like any other soldier, Jim witnessed the deaths of young men who will not be forgotten. In that campaign, he also witnessed the propaganda which hurt the people trying to love their home, the USA. A proud American, Jim shared many stories of perseverance and patriotism with his family, and those experiences are recounted here.

Download or read book Guard Wars written by Michael E. Weaver and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inventive study of relations between the National Guard and the Regular Army during World War II, Guard Wars follows the Pennsylvania National Guard's 28th Infantry Division from its peacetime status through training and into combat in Western Europe. The broader story, spanning the years 1939--1945, sheds light on the National Guard, the U.S. Army, and American identities and priorities during the war years. Michael E. Weaver carefully tracks the division's difficult transformation into a combat-ready unit and highlights General Omar Bradley's extraordinary capacity for leadership -- which turned the Pennsylvanians from the least capable to one of the more capable units, a claim dearly tested in the Battle of the HÃ1⁄4rtgen Forest. This absorbing and informative analysis chronicles the nation's response to the extreme demands of a world war, and the flexibility its leaders and soldiers displayed in the chaos of combat.
