Book excerpt: Recently, the collaboration between theory and experiments in high-energy physics has become again more fruitful, important and practically indispensable. The contributions to this volume clearly summarize, in terms of the standard model of elementary particles, the present understanding of high-energy physics and present an outlook how to go beyond this standard model. Phenomenological aspects are stressed outlining possible extensions of the standard model with main topics covering higher order corrected electroweak interactions, CP violation, quark flavour mixing, lattice QCD, and dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. Many new experiments are described to explore high-energy physics either by the highest available accelerators or by very high precision experiments forrare processes. Including a variety of theoretical models proposed beyond the standard model, it presents a global knowledge and a balanced view of high-energy physics reaching beyond this decade.

Book excerpt: This work presents, in two volumes, a comprehensive and unified treatment of modern theoretical and experimental particle physics at a level accessible to beginning research students. The emphasis throughout is on presenting underlying physical principles in a simple and intuitive way, and the more sophisticated methods demanded by present day research interests are introduced in a very gradual and gentle fashion. Volume 1 covers electroweak interactions, the discovery and properties of the 'new' particles, the discovery of partons and the construction and predictions of the simple parton model. Volume 2 deals at some length with CP-violation, but is mainly devoted to QCD and its application to 'hard' processes. A brief coverage of 'soft' hadronic physics is included. This work will provide a comprehensive reference and textbook for all graduate students and researchers interested in modern particle physics.

Book excerpt: The Theoretical Advanced Study Institute (TASI) has become the major summer school for advanced students in elementary particle theory in the United States, offering courses in particle theory, phenomenology, and mathematical physics. The theme of the 1990 school, 'Testing the Standard Model', was chosen because of the many new high precision results that had recently become available from the TEVATRON, SLC, and LEP. The goal was to explore the theoretical background and implications of experiments at these and future facilities, both in and beyond the standard model.

The original Rochester Conference brought a small group of leading physicists to discuss current results and trends in both theory and experiment. The present conference has also adhered to this format — covering the developments in particle physics over the last forty years and presenting the latest theoretical and experimental results in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since 1911, the Solvay Conferences have shaped modern physics. The 23rd edition, chaired by 2004 Nobel Laureate David Gross, did not break with that tradition. It gathered most of the leading figures working on the central problem of reconciling Einstein's theory of gravity with quantum mechanics. These proceedings give a broad overview with unique insight into the most fundamental issues raised by this challenge for 21st century physics, by distinguished renowned scientists. The contributions cover: the status of quantum mechanics, spacetime singularities and breakdown of classical space and time, mathematical structures underlying the most promising attempts under current development, spacetime as an emergent concept, as well as cosmology and the cosmological constant puzzle. A historical overview of the Solvay conferences by historian of sciences Peter Galison opens the volume. In the Solvay tradition, the volume also includes the discussions among the participants ? many of which were quite lively and illustrate dramatically divergent points of view ? carefully edited and reproduced in full.

Book excerpt: Murray Gell-Mann is one of the leading physicists of the world. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1969 for his work on the classification and symmetries of elementary particles, including the approximate SU(3) symmetry of hadrons. His list of publications is impressive; a number of his papers have become landmarks in physics. In 1953, Gell-Mann introduced the strangeness quantum number, conserved by the strong and electromagnetic interactions but not by the weak interaction. In 1954 he and F E Low proposed what was later called the renormalization group. In 1958 he and R P Feynman wrote an important article on the V-A theory of the weak interaction. In 1961 and 1962 he described his ideas about the SU(3) symmetry of hadrons and its violation, leading to the prediction of the - particle. In 1964 he proposed the quark picture of hadrons. In 1971 he and H Fritzsch proposed the exactly conserved color quantum number and in 1972 they discussed what they later called quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the gauge theory of color. These major publications and many others are collected in this volume, providing physicists with easy access to much of Gell-Mann's work. Some of the articles are concerned with his recollections of the history of elementary particle physics in the third quarter of the twentieth century.
