Book Synopsis SDI and the Alternatives by : Simon P. Worden
Download or read book SDI and the Alternatives written by Simon P. Worden and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-02 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversial nat. debate over strategic defense has been overshadowed by other nat. & global issues. Research programs for the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) continue, however, & the debate is likely to resume as visible results of that research begin to compete for a share of the nation¿s budget. This study considers strategic defense in the context of 4 competing strategic theories: deterrence through mutual assured destruction; deterrence through nuclear warfighting; deterrence relying on non-nuclear defense; & disarmament. Non-nuclear, space-based defense is not only feasible, but in some ways preferable to reliance on weapons of mass destruction. To support his case, he outlines a proposed actual system. Illus.
Book Synopsis Phytosociology and Succession on Earthquake-Uplifted Coastal Wetlands, Copper River Delta, Alaska by : John F. Thilenius
Download or read book Phytosociology and Succession on Earthquake-Uplifted Coastal Wetlands, Copper River Delta, Alaska written by John F. Thilenius and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Copper River Delta (CRD) stretches 75 km. along the south-central coastline of Alaska. It is the terminus of the outwash deposits from a large part of the most heavily glaciated region of N. Amer., & all major rivers that flow into the delta carry high levels of suspended sediments. In 1964, a severe earthquake raised the entire delta from 1.8 to 3.4 meters above the previous mean sea level. Subtidal areas became intertidal, & intertidal areas supertidal. Vegetation on newly supertidal levees changed from herb to shrub. A change in frequency & duration of tidal inundation & water salinity is the most obvious cause. The uplift appears to have altered locations & rates, but not the nature, of wetland plant succession on the CRD. Illustrations.

However, forest area is projected to decrease in a majority of regions, including the key forestry regions of the South & the Pacific Northwest Westside. Urban area is projected to increase by 68 million acres, & cropland, pasture, rangeland, & Conservation Reserve Program land is projected to decline in area. Book Synopsis American Exports: Why Have They Lagged? by : Wendell H. McCulloch
Download or read book American Exports: Why Have They Lagged? written by Wendell H. McCulloch and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing U.S. trade deficit is a source of concern to everyone. This study identifies 18 obstacles or disincentives to American exports. It is limited to the export side of the trade equation, & in its specialized setting, provides a great deal of historical & background material on factors that depress U.S. exports. The study assigns a 25% blame for declining exports on the strong dollar, & examines whether the present international monetary system of floating currency rates is the cause of the dollar¿s strength. It concludes that the system is not to blame. Given worldwide political unrest, oil price shocks, & divergence of major countries¿ economic policies, a fixed -- as opposed to floating -- currency exchange rate system could not have been maintained.

Book Synopsis Bringing Climate Change Into Natural Resource Management by : Linda Joyce
Download or read book Bringing Climate Change Into Natural Resource Management written by Linda Joyce and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 895 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workshop furthers the dialogue among scientists, land managers, landowners, interested stakeholders & the public about how individuals are addressing climate change in natural resource management. Discussions illustrated the complexity of global climate change & the need for managers to consider how the impacts of climate change will unfold across regional & local landscapes. The workshop offered examples of how managers are already responding to those aspects of the global climate change that they can see or perceive. While no comprehensive solutions emerged, there was an appreciation that policy complexity may exceed the science complexity but that eventually the accumulation of local actions will shape the future.
Book Synopsis Comparison of Measures of Core Inflation by : Robert Rich
Download or read book Comparison of Measures of Core Inflation written by Robert Rich and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability of central banks to differentiate between permanent & transitory price movements is critical for the conduct of monetary policy. The importance of gauging the persistence of price changes has led to the development of measures of underlying, or ¿core,¿ inflation that are designed to remove transitory price changes from aggregate inflation data. This article examines several proposed measures of core inflation -- the ex food & energy series, an ex energy series, a weighted median series, & an exponentially smoothed series -- to identify a ¿best¿ measure. Evaluates the measures¿ performance according to criteria such as ease of design, & accuracy in tracking trend inflation. Charts & tables.
