Book excerpt: Census records and name lists for New York are found mostly at the county level, which is why this work shows precisely which census records or census substitutes exist for each of New York's sixty-two counties and where they can be found. In addition to the numerous statewide official censuses taken by New York, this work contains references to census substitutes and name lists for time periods in which the state did not take an official census. It also shows the location of copies of federal census records and provides county boundary maps and numerous state census facsimiles and extraction forms.

Book excerpt: Although a goodly portion of the Albany County census of 1790 was burned in a 1911 fire, about half of the names for Albany County (just under 4,000) did survive. Professor Scott's compilation is a transcription of the rescued portion of the Albany County census and gives, first, the name of the head of household as it appears in the state census and, immediately after it, in brackets, the reading in the federal census-an arrangement of uncommon advantage to the genealogist.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a transcription of the surviving serial manuscript records, 1830-1900, for the Town of Wilmington, Essex County, New York, in the High Peaks region of the Adirondack Mountains. Serial records, for the purpose of this series, extend over a period of time and capture a significant portion of the population. Presenting this "record density" allows genealogists and family historians with Wilmington ancestors to reconstruct a fuller portrait of their ancestors. Records were transcribed from microfilm, and photocopied or scanned images. Entries include: 1850 Population Census, 1850 Agricultural Census, 1850 Products of Industry, 1850 Social Statistics, 1855 Population Schedule, 1855 Agricultural Schedule, 1855 Industrial Schedule, 1855 Churches & Schools Schedule, and 1855 Inns & Store Schedule. A fullname index adds to the value of this work.

Book Synopsis Revolutions and Reconstructions by : Van Gosse
Download or read book Revolutions and Reconstructions written by Van Gosse and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolutions and Reconstructions gathers historians of the early republic, the Civil War era, and African American and political history to consider not whether black people participated in the politics of the nineteenth century but how, when, and with what lasting effects. Collectively, its authors insist that historians go beyond questioning how revolutionary the American Revolution was, or whether Reconstruction failed, and focus, instead, on how political change initiated by African Americans and their allies constituted the rule in nineteenth-century American politics, not occasional and cataclysmic exceptions. The essays in this groundbreaking collection cover the full range of political activity by black northerners after the Revolution, from cultural politics to widespread voting, within a political system shaped by the rising power of slaveholders. Conceptualizing a new black politics, contributors observe, requires reorienting American politics away from black/white and North/South polarities and toward a new focus on migration and local or state structures. Other essays focus on the middle decades of the nineteenth century and demonstrate that free black politics, not merely the politics of slavery, was a disruptive and consequential force in American political development. From the perspective of the contributors to this volume, formal black politics did not begin in 1865, or with agitation by abolitionists like Frederick Douglass in the 1840s, but rather in the Revolutionary era's antislavery and citizenship activism. As these essays show, revolution, emancipation, and Reconstruction are not separate eras in U.S. history, but rather linked and ongoing processes that began in the 1770s and continued through the nineteenth century.
