Download or read book In the Wake of Disaster written by Ayesha Siddiqi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the state's responsibility to its people in the aftermath of a natural hazard based disaster? The book sets out to address this seemingly simple question, after large scale floods devastated Pakistan in 2010 and then again in 2011. Along the way it delves into rich detail about people's everday encounters with the state in Pakistan, uncovers postcolonial discourses on rights of citizenship and dispels mainstream understanding of Islamist groups as presenting an alternative development paradigm to the state. Based on detailed ethnographic fieldwork, In the Wake of the Disaster forces the reader to look beyond narratives of Pakistan as the perennial 'failing state' falling victim to an imminent 'Islamist takeover'. The book shifts the conversation from hysteria and sensationalism surrounding Pakistan to the everyday. In doing so it transforms our understanding of contemporary disasters.

Book excerpt: Tharparkar, is one of the poorest districts of Sind province and one of the fertile deserts of the world. Long before the inception of Pakistan, droughts, famine and poverty were the salient features of parched Thar. Economy of Thar is referred to as 'gambling on the monsoon' but it revolves around livestock, small agriculture income and handicrafts. During 1950's, colonization of Badin district with the construction of Ghulam Muhammad Barrage, Jumrao canal system and encroachment of gowcher lands dwindled the life style of Thar dwellers by depleting pasture lands. Thar Desert receives around one trillion liters of rain annually, sufficient to cater to domestic needs of Thar dwellers and animals for three years. Thar coalfield was discovered in 1991 and is the 6th largest coal reserve in the world, which ranked Pakistan at seventh among the top twenty Lignite-Coal possessing countries of the world. This paper gives an overview of the crisis of governance in the bureaucratic circles concerning Tharparkar.

Download or read book Bonded Labor written by Siddharth Kara and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siddharth KaraÕs Sex Trafficking has become a critical resource for its revelations into an unconscionable business, and its detailed analysis of the tradeÕs immense economic benefits and human cost. This volume is KaraÕs second, explosive study of slavery, this time focusing on the deeply entrenched and wholly unjust system of bonded labor. Drawing on eleven years of research in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, Kara delves into an ancient and ever-evolving mode of slavery that ensnares roughly six out of every ten slaves in the world and generates profits that exceeded $17.6 billion in 2011. In addition to providing a thorough economic, historical, and legal overview of bonded labor, Kara travels to the far reaches of South Asia, from cyclone-wracked southwestern Bangladesh to the Thar desert on the India-Pakistan border, to uncover the brutish realities of such industries as hand-woven-carpet making, tea and rice farming, construction, brick manufacture, and frozen-shrimp production. He describes the violent enslavement of millions of impoverished men, women, and children who toil in the production of numerous products at minimal cost to the global market. He also follows supply chains directly to Western consumers, vividly connecting regional bonded labor practices to the appetites of the world. KaraÕs pioneering analysis encompasses human trafficking, child labor, and global security, and he concludes with specific initiatives to eliminate the system of bonded labor from South Asia once and for all.

Download or read book DISASTER RISK REDUCTION IN SOUTH ASIA written by PARDEEP SAHNI and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Asia represents a region highly prone to natural disasters. Disasters not only disrupt the normal life of the affected communities and the countries but also impede developmental efforts. By and large, the approach of the major stakeholders has been 'reactive' rather than 'proactive'. There is indeed, a dire need for concerted and well-planned efforts to achieve risk reduction through risk identification, and sharing and transfer of information. This edited volume explores how the risk of disasters can be reduced by structural and non-structural measures with detailed, comprehensive and participatory strategies. Twenty-seven contributors, both academicians and practitioners, investigate the challenges that the region faces and how changes can be effected at the community, society, government and non-government levels to foster a culture of preparedness. The overall focus is on risk reduction through prevention, preparedness, mitigation, response, recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction. Some case studies from different settings dealing with various disasters have also been included. Since disaster risk reduction is an area of great concern and there is absolute dearth of literature addressing this issue with regard to South Asia, this volume will be of immense utility and interest to government departments, NGOs, insurance companies, universities, training institutions, professional associates, media, general public, and students pursuing courses in disaster management.

This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study identifies gender-related protection issues that impact women farmers in Pakistan, and suggests strategy solutions that can contribute to emergency and resilience strategies to safeguard their rights. It focuses on women farmers engaged in the production of four major crops: cotton, maize, wheat and vegetables/fruit. Women in the fisheries and livestock sectors were also interviewed to better understand women’s contributions to food systems and climate change resilience. The study analyses the linkages between women’s livelihoods, nutrition, literacy and child protection issues vis-à-vis rural women’s understandings of well-being, protection and economic security. By examining these issues, the study seeks to shed light on the kind of policy reforms, technical assistance and departmental coordination required to address protection issues that affect women in agriculture.
