Book excerpt: Seventeen years ago the author of this work made his first trip abroad to gather material for a book on coffee. Subsequently he spent a year in travel among the coffee-producing countries. After the initial surveys, correspondents were appointed to make researches in the principal European libraries and museums; and this phase of the work continued until April, 1922. Simultaneous researches were conducted in American libraries and historical museums up to the time of the return of the final proofs to the printer in June, 1922. Ten years ago the sorting and classification of the material was begun. The actual writing of the manuscript has extended over four years. Among the unique features of the book are the Coffee Thesaurus; the Coffee Chronology, containing 492 dates of historical importance; the Complete Reference Table of the Principal Kinds of Coffee Grown in the World; and the Coffee Bibliography, containing 1,380 references.

Book excerpt: From the time that Renate was a schoolgirl she knew she wanted to be a nun; being a wife and mother was desirable but out of the question . . . or so it seemed. After taking her vows her curiosity about the life she had given up became her weakness and at times resulted in great difficulty for her. Having chosen to be a missionary she was sent from her native Germany to a mission half a world away in German New Guinea in the turbulent days before the First World War. She thought that all her concerns had now become moot but it was there that she met Lieutenant Johannes Seitz and his beautiful mixed-race wife Rosa. Their open sexuality taunted her and she was drawn into a whirlpool of emotions that left her vulnerable to her secret desires. In her innocence she was unaware of an agenda that transcended her wildest dreams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linda Goyette and Carolina Roemmich have tapped Edmonton's collective memoir, through the written record, the spoken stories and the vast silences. All of the people who ever lived at this bend in the North Saskatchewan took part in creating the city we know as Edmonton. Through traditional Indigenous stories about the earliest travellers along the bend in the river, diaries, archival records and letters of 19th century inhabitants and the recollections of living residents who talk about the emerging city, Edmonton's history is told using the words and stories of the people who have called this city home. Citizens with diverse viewpoints speak for themselves, describing important events in Edmonton's social, political and economic development. The official publication of the City of Edmonton's Centennial, Edmonton In Our Own Words includes many never seen before photographs from private collections, historic maps and a timeline of Edmonton's history. Imagine a conversation between Edmonton's past inhabitants and its living citizens. What would we tell the rest of the world about our place on the map? What stories would we tell with tears in our eyes, or laughter, or pride? In Edmonton In Our Own Words, experience the personal stories of eyewitnesses and descendants explaining, arguing, crying, scolding, laughing and interrupting one another in a city's evolving conversation with itself as Edmonton celebrates its past and future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you desire intimacy with Jesus? He desires it with you. A look at the Song of Solomon confirms that. Just as with a husband and wife, intimacy-real oneness with Him-requires above all else, love and selflessness, and must include determination, time, and faithfulness. So it is with our Bridegroom Jesus Christ. Is your path of life difficult? He says "This is the way, walk in it." Learn to read and follow His road map, as you grasp tightly to His hand and follow Him, through the seasons of life. Be encouraged as the author shares years of personal experience and life lessons. Learn some of the most essential elements required to abiding in Christ-moment by moment consciously aware of, and present to, His presence. Spanning the seasons of life with a variety of subjects, the author speaks to the heart of all readers. Wherever you are in your Christian walk, WITH MY HAND IN HIS will arouse in you a new desire for a deeper relationship with Christ. Be astonished at what God accomplished in a young woman's life because she never gave up hope in Him. In WITH MY HAND IN HIS, I am reminded that God is who He says He is, and we can confidently rely on Him through all the seasons of our lives, if we keep our hand in His and believe that hope lives on. Little did I know (but God knew), when the author asked me to help her edit her writing, I would be in deep need of the encouragement found in her book. -Helen Nordquist, With My Hand in His editor

Book excerpt: The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.

Book excerpt: For more information, please visit www.sohelpmegodrosalind.com YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7e4w6IA82E Rosalind is a survivor of sexual abuse as a child, vicious domestic violence, bigamy, and addiction. She candidly takes you to hospitals and courtrooms, through the passage ways of single parenting and care-giving simultaneously. In order to cope with the nightmare of choices taken from her, or foolish choices of her own, she travels down the road which leads to self-destruction. This memoir offers readers an intimate look into how one woman struggled with life’s seemingly unbearable hairpin curves, yet coped with them all through resilience and faith, finding redemption amid agony. Woven with love and craftily written, the author gives insight within the pages of SO HELP ME GOD, glimpses and glimmers of life. It is an honest account of one woman, who within her brokenness and solitude, searched for the courage to overcome life’s austerity. This is an inspiring true story that intertwines hope, forgiveness, healing and God’s perfect timing into one hard-to-put-down book
