Book excerpt: This book presents an international perspective on health education and specifically the influence that context has on this aspect of education. The focus includes both formal and non-formal health education and the factors that impact upon its effectiveness, particularly in non-Western and non-English-speaking contexts (i.e., outside the UK, USA, Australia, NZ, etc.). An important feature of the book is that it draws upon the experiences and research of local experts, representing the perspectives of an extremely diverse cohort across the world (22 countries and 2 regions in total). The book addresses topics such as: the development and implementation of health education in different countries; the influence of political, cultural, societal or religious mores; governmental or ministerial drives; economic or other pressures driving curriculum reform; and the influence of external assessment regimes on health education. By embedding discussions of health education in local contexts and representing a diversity of perspectives on this important topic this book highlights both barriers and enablers to improving health education across the globe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses abortion in a non-Western, non-Christian context - in Thailand, where over 300,000 illegal abortions are performed each year by a variety of methods. The book, based on extensive original research in the field, examines a wide range of issues, including stories of the real-life dilemmas facing women, popular representations of abortion in the media, the history of the debate in Thailand and its links to politics. Overall, the work highlights the voices of women and their subjective experiences and perceptions of abortion, and places these 'women's stories' in an analysis of broader socio-political gender and power relations that structure sexuality and women's reproductive health decisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relevance of issues of gender and sexuality in relation to reproductive health in Thailand is discussed here. The topics of this monograph were categorized according to a list formulated by WHO. These categories are family planning, maternal/child health and safe motherhood, infertility, and abortion/complications of abortions. The document also provides information on sexually transmitted diseases/reproductive tract infections, sex education, reproductive tract malignancy, adolescent health, menopause, and the elderly. These categories fall naturally under three headings: family planning, maternal/child health, and the consequences of unwanted pregnancies. In the latter stage of the project, consultative meetings were held in Bangkok, Hat Yai, Khon Kaen and Chiang Mai to obtain valuable views from other experts. The results were discussed at a seminar held in Bangkok on November 21-22, 1998. This seminar saw the adoption of a life cycle perspective in which men and women act out their gender roles--including those associated with sexuality--during adolescence and the subsequent stages of their adult lives. Because reproductive health is a coherent entity, policy and programs for all aspects of reproductive health should be integrated. This project concludes that research, advocacy and training concerning the gender-related aspects of interactions between providers and clients in the delivery of reproductive health services is needed. Also, a comprehensive information, education and communication program is called for so that services can be extended to include men in supportive roles wherever possible.
