Book excerpt: This book studies how Borges constructs a theory of translation that plays a fundamental role in the development of Argentine literature, and which, in turn, expands the potential for writers in Latin America to create new and innovative literatures through processes of re-reading, rewriting, and mis-translation. The book analyzes Borges's texts in both an Argentine and a transnational context, thus incorporating Borges's ideas into contemporary debates about translation and its relationship to language and aesthetics, Latin American culture and identity, tradition and originality, and center-periphery dichotomies. Furthermore, a central objective of this book is to show that the study of the importance of translation in Borges and of the importance of Borges for translation studies need not be separated. Furthermore, translation studies has much to gain by the inclusion of Latin American thinkers such as Borges, while literary studies has much to gain by in-depth considerations of the role of translation in Latin American literatures. Sergio Waisman is an Assistant Professor of Spanish at The George Washington University.

This study, charting the construction of a Catalan identity from the nineteenth-century cultural renaissance until the present day, explores the interaction of language, culture and identity in contemporary Catalonia. Drawing on postcolonial and multicultural literary theories, it argues that Castilian- and Catalan-language narratives are expressions of the same culture. Through detailed analyses of texts by Terenci Moix, Francisco Candel, Ignasi Riera, Montserrat Roig, Juan Marsé, Ramon Pallicé, and Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, among others, the author demonstrates that such writers share similar preoccupations and points of view and also engage in a complex literary and cultural dialogue that cuts across the established linguistic divisions that characterise cultural politics in Catalonia. The Catalan literary establishment's exclusion of Castilian as a language capable of expressing 'Catalan-ness' ischallenged and the author proposes redefining traditional understandings of Catalan literature to take into account texts produced by all members of Catalan society. Consciente de esta carencia, me he atrevido a elaborar, palabra por palabra, esta obra de características desconocidas en el país, tomando para ello la jerga propia de nuestro Congreso Nacional y la del Congreso de los Estados Unidos. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The translation of the different steps of the parliamentary procedure in our country has always raised difficulties, which at times, have led to serious misinterpretations, not always solved even by the passing of time. As it happens with the jargon of any specialty, the vocabulary used in Congress and provincial and local legislatures in the consideration of their legislative initiatives is specific, and all attempts to move away from it may lead to misunderstandings and awkward situations. Long before the creation of the Argentine Congress, our legislative houses attempted to reproduce—through translation—terminology and procedures to be able to successfully hold their meetings. To that end, it was found appropriate to resort to the old legislative bodies, such as the British Parliament, the Congress of the United States of America and the Legislative Assembly of France. Among the many specialty dictionaries in these latitudes, it is difficult to find one on parliamentary procedure; and up to the present, there is no other bilingual dictionary containing the number of specific terms that this dictionary contains. Being aware of this deficit, I have dared to build up, word by word, this work of unknown characteristics in the country, employing, to that end, the jargon of our National Congress and that of the Congress of the United States.
