Book Synopsis Coated and Laminated Textiles by : W Fung
Download or read book Coated and Laminated Textiles written by W Fung and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2002-05-09 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coating and laminating are methods of both improving and modifying the physical properties and appearance of fabric. They have also facilitated the development of entirely new products and have led to innovations in the area of 'smart' materials. Coating and lamination cuts across virtually every product group of the textile industry, including composites where the scope for future development is extremely wide. This book helps bridge the gap between the two disciplines of textile technology and polymer chemistry, both of which are necessary for success in this area of technical textiles, and it also touches on the related textile processes of fabric impregnation and foam finishing. The manufacturing processes of coated and laminated fabrics involve materials such as solvent- and water-based resins and adhesives, films, foams and hot melt adhesives. In an increasingly environmentally-conscious world, control and handling of potentially toxic materials are becoming very important tasks for plant managers. The author emphasises the factors influencing selection of materials and process machinery -- especially with reference to environmental issues including global warming. Product descriptions, production and test methods and standards are discussed in detail, and the book will be a valuable source of reference, embracing apparel, domestic, medical, military and industrial applications.

Book Synopsis Conserving Canvas by : Cynthia Schwarz
Download or read book Conserving Canvas written by Cynthia Schwarz and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most authoritative publication in nearly fifty years on the subject of conserving paintings on canvas. In 2019, Yale University, with the support of the Getty Foundation, held an international conference, where nearly four hundred attendees from more than twenty countries gathered to discuss a vital topic: how best to conserve paintings on canvas. It was the first major symposium on the subject since 1974, when wax-resin and glue-paste lining reigned as the predominant conservation techniques. Over the past fifty years, such methods, which were often destructive to artworks, have become less widely used in favor of more minimalist approaches to intervention. More recent decades have witnessed the reevaluation of traditional practices as well as focused research supporting significant new methodologies, procedures, and synthetic materials for the care and conservation of paintings on fabric supports. Conserving Canvas compiles the proceedings of the conference, presenting a wide array of papers and posters that provide important global perspectives on the history, current state, and future needs of the field. Featuring an expansive glossary of terms that will be an invaluable resource for conservators, this publication promises to become a standard reference for the international conservation community. The free online edition of this open-access publication is available at getty.edu/publications/conserving-canvas. Also available are free PDF and EPUB downloads of the book.
Download or read book Burdon written by Edmund Bohan and published by Hazard Press Ltd. This book was released on 2004 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It would be easy to make assumptions about someone like Philip Burdon. The product of a long line of landed gentry going back to the fourteenth century, and of well-heeled pilgrims on Canterbury's First Four Ships, brought up and educated as one of South Canterbury's privileged landowners, a distinguished old boy of Christ's College - and a self-made multimillionaire to boot. Burdon might appear to be the archetypal New Zealand Anglocentric conservative. The truth is very different. This man is also a passionate republican, a businessman with an acute social conscience, a liberal politician who fought relentlessly against the right-wing ideologues of his own National Party, and not only slowed their extremist free-market reforms but convinced his caucus that this philosophy must wear a human face. As Minister of Trade Negotiations, he steered New Zealand through the labyrinth of GATT reforms that made up the Uruguay Round, oversaw a tremendous expansion of New Zealand's trading links into the Middle East, Asia and south and Central America, and championed the cause of regional economic development in the Pacific-Asia area. And, especially through the Asia 2000 Foundation, he has striven for multi-racial harmony and to encourage New Zealand's Asian community to take a full part in this country's public affairs. But this is much more than the biography of a complex and interesting man. Critically acclaimed historian Edmund Bohan has also created a fascinating, lively and important portrait of an extraordinary period in New Zealand's history.
Book Synopsis The Evolution of Economic Development in Africa by : Francis K. Mbroh
Download or read book The Evolution of Economic Development in Africa written by Francis K. Mbroh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-11 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the theoretical framework of the trade-growth and structural transformation-growth nexuses, the book examines the evolution of African (goods and service) trade in terms of value and share of global commerce relative to other regions during the period 1948–2017. It also identifies and discusses discernible changes in the composition and structure of African exports and imports between 1995 and 2015 and their implications for economic development in Africa. The study attributes Africa's laggard trade performance during the period primarily to sub-optimal macroeconomic policies and lack of bold export development policies and initiatives, among other factors. It also offers an incisive discussion of several inhibitions to the structural transformation of African exports and imports, including lack of finance, globalization, tariff, and non-tariff measures in global markets. The discussion of the evolution of African trade during the period 1948–2017 based on statistics and publications of international organizations, including the UNCTAD, the World Bank, and the African Development Bank, among others, is the first of its kind in terms of scope and depth of review of African trade. The analyses of cross-border trade during 1948–2017 and their implications for Africa’s economic development prospects constitute a useful reference material for academics and students of African and development studies and African and international policymakers.
