Agricultural and industrial pollution release large amounts of heavy metals into the atmosphere, surface water, soil, and plants. The aim of this research work is to determine the potential of application of sodium polyphosphate modified kaolinite clay as an adsorbent for the removal of lead (II), zinc (II) and cadmium (II) ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent dosage, pH, temperature and contact time were investigated. The adsorption isotherms of all three metal ions followed well Langmuir equation. Modified sodium polyphosphate-kaolinite clay was found to remove heavy metal ions efficiently from aqueous solutions with selectivity in the order of Pb2+ > Zn2+ > Cd2+. The maximum heavy metal ions adsorbed by modified. The results of this study showed that the sodium polyphosphate-kaolinite clay powder can be efficiently used as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of divalent lead, zinc and cadmium from aqueous solution.

The removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions in this work herein is investigated by an adsorption of heavy metals on a local Libyan Soil called Ashkida soil mined in the Southern Province of Libya. The soil efficiency and removal capacity of heavy metals from aqueous solutions was experimentally investigated in a batch system. The experiments are performed in a batch system at room temperature. It is aimed to study the effects of some parameters of heavy metals adsorption capacity on the soil. A comparison of equilibrium isotherms and kinetic models applied to the adsorption of heavy metals ions on the adsorbent, and parameters were calculated. The adsorption process was physisorption and controlled by an endothermic reaction; however, an efficient heavy metals removal can be achieved at ambient temperature.

DescriptionWater pollution is a topic of immense and common concern throughout the world. With a rapidly escalating global population and increased industrial development in a growing number of countries, the world's freshwater resources have become stressed. One way to get more out of less is 'treatment and reuse'. Nickel and chromium are toxic metals and they are used extensively in numerous industries such as textiles, beverages, steel, pulp and paper, and electroplating. Their industrial effluent contains large measures of non-biodegradable traces that are harmful to flora, fauna, and human beings. Although there are a number of methodologies used for treatment of metal-containing industrial effluents and waste water, there is not one up to now that offers a high capacity removal rate at an economical cost. This book presents the results and data from research and adsorption experiments carried out on the removal of nickel and chromium (as well as other metals) from aqueous solutions using modified silica sand. The data resulting from detailed kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic studies, show that the removal capacity is increased so the treated water has a higher quality or purity. It also demonstrates that the extraction of metals is achieved at a significant lower cost because the treated water adsorption is a simple process with less maintenance, and because silica is a nontoxic natural material widely available in all parts of the world.

Marine algae A. nodosum was identified for the highest uptake for these metals, and even better than commercial ion exchange resin. A. nodosum maximum uptake capacities for lead and cadmium were in excess of 2590 mg Pb/(g dried biomass) and 120 mg Cd/(g dried biomass), respectively (pH:3.5-5.5). The adsorption mechanism for this natural material is reversible. Meal ions can be easily eluted from the biosorbent with dilute mineral acids. The biosorption process was investigated for equilibrium batch as well as dynamic packed bed column modes. Two different sorbent immobilization techniques, cross-linking and entrapment were developed for the packed bed studies. It was observed that A. nodosum cross-lined with formaldehyde give the best results for practical use." --
