Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Texas, Vol. 1 of 2: The Rise, Progress, and Prospects of the Republic of Texas The 'complete Map of the Republic of Texas has been compiled from the best published authorities, including the maps of Stephen Austin, Mitchell (philadelphia), and surveys made under the sanction of the Texan Government. To these is to be added Le Grand's original survey, of the precise date of which, owing to a manuscript omission, I am not certain, - the point is trifling, but the survey must have been made in 1830 or 1831. To the zeal and skill of Mr. Arrowsmith I am materially in debted for a map which, without pretending to ah solute accuracy, is a great improvement upon all preceding ones, and will serve every practical pur pose of the politician and emigrant. The necessity of correcting the sheets of this work at a considerable distance from London, has delayed its appearance beyond the anticipated period. Book excerpt: Welcome to the town of Promise, deep in the heart of Texas! Promise, a ranching community in the Hill Country, is a place with a mysterious past and a secret or two hidden under its everyday exterior. It's also a place where family and friendship are the things that really matter…. CAROLINE'S CHILD Who's the father of Caroline's child? Everyone in town wants to know, but no one's ever asked—or ever will. The people of Promise are protective of Caroline Daniels and five-year-old Maggie. They care. Especially rancher Grady Weston, who's beginning to realize he more than cares…. DR. TEXAS They call her Dr. Texas. She's Jane Dickinson, a newly graduated physician from California who's working at the Promise clinic—but just for a couple of years. They call him Mr. Grouch. Cal Patterson was left at the altar by his out-of-state fiancée, and he's not over it yet. Too bad Jane reminds him so much of the woman he's trying to forget!

Book excerpt: Awarded the Texas State Historical Association's Coral Horton Tullis Memorial Prize; presented March 2005 Despite controversies over current educational practices, Texas boasts a rich and vibrant bilingual tradition-and not just for Spanish-English instruction, but for Czech, German, Polish, and Dutch as well. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Texas educational policymakers embraced, ignored, rejected, outlawed, then once again embraced this tradition. In The Strange Career of Bilingual Education in Texas, author Carlos Blanton traces the educational policies and their underlying rationales, from Stephen F. Austin's proposal in the 1830s to "Mexicanize" Anglo children by teaching them Spanish along with English and French, through the 1981 passage of the most encompassing bilingual education law in the state's history. Blanton draws on primary materials, such as the handwritten records of county administrators and the minutes of state education meetings, and presents the Texas experience in light of national trends and movements, such as Progressive Education, the Americanization Movement, and the Good Neighbor Movement. By tracing the many changes that eventually led to the re-establishment of bilingual education in its modern form in the 1960s and the 1981 passage of a landmark state law, Blanton reconnects Texas with its bilingual past. CARLOS KEVIN BLANTON, an assistant professor of history at Texas A&M University, earned his Ph.D. from Rice University. His research in Mexican American educational history has been published in journals such as the Pacific Historical Review and Social Science Quarterly.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Texas, Vol. 2 of 2: From Its First Settlement in 1685 to Its Annexation to the United States in 1846 In the compilation of this volume, the materials were so abundant, that the great difficulty was, to select the most prominent and connected facts, so as not to make the volume too ponderous, nor to break the unity of the story. In all this you will doubtless find errors, but - I have done the best I could, and hope you may find it sufficiently interesting to pe ruse it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texas is a land of legends and folktales. Some of them are based on characters like Pecos Bill, Bigfoot Wallace, and Davy Crockett - loud, outgoing, bigger-than-life "daytime" kinds of people. Others concern themselves with mysterious, shadowy things: giant, footless birds, river spirits, and phantom lights. These ghost stories are told in whispers. Perhaps to make children behave or adults change their way of living and have become interwoven with the real-life historical happenings and characters of Texas to the point of doubt in some instances as to what is real and what is the child of overactive imaginations. As is the case with all folklore, they are told in many different versions. These have be-come a part of the heritage of Texas folklore.
