Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Texas in the Middle Eighteenth Century, Vol. 3: Studies in Spanish Colonial, History and Administration While the papers here published are historical in their treat ment, they contain much that should be of interest to the ethnolo gist and to the student of actual government in the Spanish provinces. It is only through a detailed study of such episodes as those which are treated here that we shall be able to determine the true character of Spanish colonial government. This con sideration has led the writer to give full space to administrative as well as to narrative history. In the same way, since most of the subjects treated are to a large extent questions of Indian policy, due attention has been given to matters of importance regarding the Indian situation. The special studies here presented are based almost ex clusively upon manuscript sources, chiefly in the archives of Mexico, Spain, and Texas, and for the most part hitherto un known and unused. The assembling of these materials, during a period of thirteen years, has been the greater part of my task. My quest has been as romantic as the Search for the Golden Fleece. I have burrowed in the dust of the archives of Church and State in Mexico City, in a dozen Mexican state capitals, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and in numerous places in Texas. The distance travelled in my pursuit of documents would carry me around the globe. I have lived with the padres in ruinous old monasteries in out of the way villages in the mountains of Mexico. I count among the treasures of my personal archive the letters of introduction from ambassadors, secretaries of state, and gov ernors; cardinals, archbishops, bishops, friars, and parish priests, who have smoothed my way. Excerpt: ... doches I have not been able to find. The earliest communication of his from there that I have seen is dated May 9. It is a letter to Governor Cabello, and contains language implying that he had been at Nacogdoches some time and that Cabello already knew about the removal from Bucareli.26. In relating to Croix on May 13 the story of the desertion of Bucareli he says that more than a hundred days were spent in getting to Nacogdoches. To have been true this could not have referred to the party he conducted, for he did not leave Bucareli till some days after February 14. Neither could it have referred to the whole party led by Father Garza, because one hundred days from January 25. when he set out. was May 5; but. as we have seen, some, if not most, of the settlers had arrived at Nacogdoches as early as April 30. If Ybarbo's statement was true, therefore, he probably meant that it was one hundred days from the time when Father Garza started before all the stragglers who had stopped by the way arrived at the new settlement. It is necessary here to correct an error that crept into the story of the abandonment of Bucareli as it was told in the Spanish correspondence, namely, the assertion that the cause of leavins the place was the flood. It is clear from the above account that the Comanche raid was the external cause of the removal of the people to the east, and that the flood did not occur till three weeks after most of them had left. Yet, through an increasing emphasis of what was in reality a secondary matter, it soon became current in the governmental accounts that the change of location had been primarily due to the overflow of the Trinity.27 2 Expedicnte sobre el abandono, 32-33. 27 It is true, however, that a previous flood had...

Book excerpt: Modern Texas, like Mexico to the south, traces its beginning to sixteenth-century encounters between Spaniards, Native American peoples, and a vast land unexplored by Europeans. Unlike Mexico, however, Texas eventually received the stamp of Anglo-American culture, so that Spanish contributions to present-day Texas tend to be obscured or even unknown. In this pathfinding study, Donald E. Chipman draws on archival and secondary sources to write the story of Spain's three-hundred-year presence and continuing influence in the land that has become Texas. Chipman begins with the first European sighting of Texas shores in 1519. He goes on to chronicle the amazing eight-year (1528-1536) trek across much of southern Texas and northern Mexico that brought Cabeza de Vaca and three companions from a shipwreck near Galveston Island all the way to Mexico City. He records the exploits of Francisco Vazquez de Coronado and Luis Moscoso in the early 1540s and the subsequent 150-year hiatus in Spanish exploration in Texas. Chipman devotes much attention to the eighteenth century, a time of active Spanish colonization. He examines the role of missions, presidios, and civil settlements and discusses relations between the Spanish and other groups, including Native Americans, French explorers, and Anglo-Americans. Although Mexican independence ended the Spanish era in 1821, Chipman finds that Spain has left a substantial legacy in modern Texas. Ranching and its terminology sprang from Spanish vaqueros. Spanish precedents have shaped modern Texas law in the areas of judicial procedure, land and water law, and family law. Spanish influences abound in Texas art, architecture, music, and theater, not to mentionthe widely spoken Spanish language. And the Roman Catholic religion introduced by the Spaniards continues to have many adherents in Texas. In short, the rich history of Spain in Texas deserves to be widely known by "Texana buffs" and professional historians alike, and Spanish Texas, 1519-1821 is the one-volume source to consult.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diaries of Pedro de Rivera and the Marques de Rubí, written in the eighteenth century during inspections of the far northern frontier of New Spain, are crucial documents for studying and understanding the Spanish presence on the frontier of what would one day be Texas. Rivera's diary, previously unavailable in English translation, and the heretofore unknown Rubí diary are both presented here, carefully placed in historical context by Jackson and Foster. Because of Spain's tenuous hold on the distant frontier, Rubí and Rivera saw it as an imaginary possession—the king's domain in name only. No other military visits to the frontier in this era rivaled those of Rivera and Rubí in scope, organization, or execution. They were significant fact-finding commissions, authorized by the Spanish king, that resulted in extensive reports, broad recommendations, and tangible changes in military regulations for the presidios on the far northern frontier. To understand Texas and its adjacent provinces at this formative time, students and scholars of the Borderlands must examine the records left by these two military expeditions. These remarkable documents contain fascinating insights into the early Spanish road systems, the early towns and missions, the Indians, and the flora and fauna. Each diary has an introduction, and detailed route maps and annotations are provided. Following the diaries and related documents, each inspection is assessed in depth. These two diaries, and the editors' careful annotation and analysis, provide significant new material which will help further understanding of Spanish Texas, the people who inhabited it, and its influence on the Texas of today.
