Book excerpt: The outbreak of "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland in 1968 found many of the local police and army auxiliary units outmoded or discredited. A new and unique force of part-time soldiers was created: The Ulster Defence Regiment. A Testimony to Courage vividly describes the threat under which not just the soldiers but their families also had to live, and records the murders of some of the 197 members killed as a result of terrorist attack. It addresses how the Regiment became mainly Protestant as a result of the loss of Nationalist support and recruits, and the constant criticism of the Irish Government and Nationalist politicians. A final chapter records objectively the lessons to be learnt from this unique experience. This book is not an official history as such but more a thorough record of the UDR's dramatic 23 year existence.

The prettiest, most handsome, richest people could be hitting rock bottom and we would never know until they either speak up about it or it is too late. Well, let's learn to stop waiting until it is too late to show love and check in on others. A helping hand is never the wrong idea when you are trying to help. Some people just need to hear it will be okay or that they are not alone. Have you ever had the biggest support system, but somehow still feel so alone? Or even just becoming speechless when trying to scream out for help? I was that person. I hit rock bottom so hard I couldn't find the energy to do anything. Then, of course, I hated myself for allowing myself to become so down in the dumps that it made me even more down knowing I was at that stage in life. At the time, I knew I wasn't going to make it. I couldn't make it. I didn't have self-motivation to pick myself up at all, and there was no one who I could open up to so what was next for me? What do I do when I had no clue on what I was supposed to do? Who do I call when I felt like I didn't want to put my problems on others. I sat and dealt with it, or at least that's what I thought I was doing. After feeling like I lost it all and had nothing more to lose, I prayed. Yes, I asked God to help me because I had no one else to turn to. He is always on time because some how he pulled me through and I am now able to share my story. I am here to tell you, "that person," was once me. I was the person who isolated myself from everyone and had no clue why. It is okay to hurt, to cry, and to ask for help. Re-find yourself; discover a better you, and never turn back. Everyone has problems. I just want you to know you do not have to go at them alone.

Book excerpt: This story is dedicated to all of those who hunger and thirst for righteousness - and to those who have prayed for many years to see our city and region transformed in a way that will see unity and love prevail. This book is also dedicated to the one I love, my Saviour who first loved me: Jesus Christ. He wooed me as a young woman in my late teens. My life was transformed from that time. This story of hope is also lovingly dedicated to my three precious children: Christopher, Michael and Summer. And, of course, this is written in honour of a man who loved me dearly and loved those he encountered daily: my late husband, Bert Petkau. Bert, you are always close to us, and you will never be forgotten. I regularly meet people who have suffered loss, felt disappointment with life, or experienced difficulties that they weren't expecting. Perhaps you are one of them. Not in a million years did I think I would go through an experience that would so suddenly change my life forever - let alone that I would write a book about it. This chronicle is a true account; the testimony of one love story ended too soon, and another story of faithful love that never ends. It is the story of the wondrous workings of the God I know called "Abba" (an Aramaic word that means "Daddy''). He is a loving Father who meets us in our most troubling circumstances and stays by our side to comfort and heal. I pray that my testimony of walking out of despair and into hope will encourage you. Welcome to my journey and I encourage you to ponder and meditate upon the scriptures, and devotional thoughts relating to my story as well as some of my poems, and lyrics from Bert's music. I've included links to the songs Bert wrote so that you can listen, and perhaps enjoy them as much as I do. - Teresa Petkau

Women and men alike are hurting, lost, broken, and desperate for a solution to what seems to be a hopeless situation in their lives. Life will knock you down and keep on beating you until you have nothing left but perhaps a tiny fragment of hope. You may feel like you have been defeated, deeply wounded, and scarred by those closest to you. Maybe you even feel that there is no reason to go on living. Do any of these sound like you? You may feel as if you are all alone, stuck in an endless cycle, with no way to escape the chaos and darkness of this corrupt and fallen world. What if there was a way, would you want to know?Take a look into this woman's testimony to see how she was saved from rejection, depression, worthlessness, addiction, betrayal, physical and sexual abuse, and even suicide. Witness the courage and strength God gave her to not only get through the most painful and agonizing time of her life, but to come out victorious on the other side, as she surrendered her life wholeheartedly to Him. Through her story, experience the goodness of our God as He transformed this shattered woman and gave her peace, a renewed passion for life, healed her heart, and made her whole through Jesus Christ. Learn that our God is good, faithful, and full of grace, mercy, and compassion. Know that God will do the same for you if you will just accept Him and let Him into your heart. There is only one question to ask yourself: Are you ready to make the choice, to step out of the darkness and into His magnificent light?

Book excerpt: Courage Under Fire is the testimony of one woman's journey through life's issues, challenges and various spiritual attacks. This is a book to encourage those who are living in despair and hopelessness to know that there is no hopeless situation. People lose hope in the situation but there is always a way of escape, if we trust God. Courage Under Fire is a book for such a time as this. We are in an age where it seems as if the Enemy has launched a vicious attack against the people of God. Many people are finding out the hard way that everything in this world is temporary and is subject to fail. We cannot put our trust in our jobs, in people, in money or in things because there is a great global shaking and everything seems to be crumbling around us. This book shows that in the midst of the spiritual war and in the midst of the shaking there is a Sovereign God who cares about every single detail of our lives. He allows these shaking to occur in our lives so that we will know that He, God, is more powerful than any spiritual arrows or darts that the Enemy will send our way. David said in Psalm ll9:71 (KJV) "It is good for me that I have been afflicted: that I might learn thy statues." Courage Under Fire is a book that helps us to see the Mighty hand of God in the darkest of times. This is a book that shows the people of God that they have spiritual authority over the attacks of Satan. The Body of Christ needs to be more vigilant in learning to use their weapon which is the word of God and the Blood of Jesus Christ.
