Book Synopsis Management Laureates by : Arthur G. Bedeian
Download or read book Management Laureates written by Arthur G. Bedeian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998. This volume compiles the autobiographies of the management discipline’s most distinguished laureates. Prior to this publication, the available management literature provided little insight into the personal and intellectual lives - the frustrations as well as the triumphs - of the individuals in the management discipline. Although such understanding could be conveyed in many forms, perhaps the most intimate and fascinating of these for gaining behind-the-scenes insights is the autobiography. Thus, the autobiographies in this volume, as in the five companion volumes, offer the reader not only a glimpse of the subjective determinants and personal experiences of the management discipline’s most distinguished laureates, but also a deeper understanding of what management is and what it is becoming. The various accounts reflect a diversity of approaches, interests, and experiences.

It addresses the challenges of constructing and maintaining effective organizations. Essential to organizational design is the assumption that it can improve organizations. Faced with the ever-accelerating pace of technological change and the restructuring of markets, many firms have been questioning their own organization. This book is the third to emerge from a series of workshops on organization design, featuring new empirical research and theoretical insights. The chapters are organized around four central themes: 1) Towards New Organizational Forms, 2) Dynamics of Adaptation and Change, 3) Theoretical and Practical issues, 4) Fit and Performance. Collectively, the chapters reflect the state of the art of OD as well as provide a further step towards the evolution of this important field of research.

Book excerpt: What is organization theory and why does it matter? Where did it start, how has it developed, and what impact does it have on organisations? This book brings a fresh approach to these questions and is aimed at undergraduates and postgraduates for whom the study of organizational theory or analysis is an integral part of their degree programme. What is organization theory and why does it matter? Where did it start, how has it developed, and what impact does it have on today's organisations? What challenges does it pose, what solutions can it offer, and how can it be used to make sense of contemporary management and organization? This book addresses these questions and explores organization theory from its origins right up to present-day debates. The authors pay sceptical respect to different schools of thought, encouraging the reader to engage in a critical dialogue between varying perspectives. In addition, the frequent and appealing examples show how concepts of organization theory can be seen in the context of managerial reality. A rich set of pedagogical features to support the reader includes: Stop and Think boxes to invite personal or group reflection; brief Biographies of seminal thinkers; and case Studies on organizations such as ... ideas and perspectives to introduce and summarize key theories.
Book Synopsis The Structuring of Organizations by : Henry Mintzberg
Download or read book The Structuring of Organizations written by Henry Mintzberg and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesizes the empirical literature on organizationalstructuring to answer the question of how organizations structure themselves --how they resolve needed coordination and division of labor. Organizationalstructuring is defined as the sum total of the ways in which an organizationdivides and coordinates its labor into distinct tasks. Further analysis of theresearch literature is neededin order to builda conceptualframework that will fill in the significant gap left by not connecting adescription of structure to its context: how an organization actuallyfunctions. The results of the synthesis are five basic configurations (the SimpleStructure, the Machine Bureaucracy, the Professional Bureaucracy, theDivisionalized Form, and the Adhocracy) that serve as the fundamental elementsof structure in an organization. Five basic parts of the contemporaryorganization (the operating core, the strategic apex, the middle line, thetechnostructure, and the support staff), and five theories of how it functions(i.e., as a system characterized by formal authority, regulated flows, informalcommunication, work constellations, and ad hoc decision processes) aretheorized. Organizations function in complex and varying ways, due to differing flows -including flows of authority, work material, information, and decisionprocesses. These flows depend on the age, size, and environment of theorganization; additionally, technology plays a key role because of itsimportance in structuring the operating core. Finally, design parameters aredescribed - based on the above five basic parts and five theories - that areused as a means of coordination and division of labor in designingorganizational structures, in order to establish stable patterns of behavior.(CJC).
