Book excerpt: An excellent primer on the subject, this book gives beginning professionals in satellite newsgathering an introduction to the technologies and processes involved. It will also suit journalists, editors and producers needing to understand this important element of the newsgathering chain. Written for the complete beginner, the book shows how typical transmission chains work and their communication with the studio. It also offers a brief introduction to analogue and digital theory before going onto to explain Electronic Newsgathering (ENG) systems: from basic principles: transmission and reception chains, frequencies used and why, through to audio channel, subcarriers and digital modulation, as well as applications: radio cameras, window links, infra-red & laser links. A brief chapter on satellite theory gives an overview of satellite communication and orbits, basic satellite communication theory, transportables (`flyaways') and trucks, as well as analogue vs digital issues, digital compression and MPEG. Systems regulations and operations are also introduced as well as safety and logistics issues. If you're looking for a quick and easy introduction to the subject, this book will act as an essential on the job reference guide.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive resource provides the latest information on digitization and reconstruction (D&R) of analog signals in digital radios. Readers learn how to conduct comprehensive analysis, concisely describe the major signal processing procedures carried out in the radios, and demonstrate the dependence of these procedures on the quality of D&R. The book presents and analyzes the most promising and theoretically sound ways to improve the characteristics of D&R circuits and illustrate the influence of these improvements on the capabilities of digital radios. The book is intended to bridge the gap that exists between theorists and practical engineers developing D&R techniques by introducing new signal transmission and reception methods that can effectively utilize the unique capabilities offered by novel digitization and reconstruction techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns digital communication. Specifically, we treat the transport of bit streams from one geographical location to another over various physical media, such as wire pairs, coaxial cable, optical fiber, and radio waves. Further, we cover the mul tiplexing, multiple access, and synchronization issues relevant to constructing com munication networks that simultaneously transport bit streams from many users. The material in this book is thus directly relevant to the design of a multitude of digital communication systems, including for example local and metropolitan area data net works, voice and video telephony systems, the integrated services digital network (ISDN), computer communication systems, voiceband data modems, and satellite communication systems. We extract the common principles underlying these and other applications and present them in a unified framework. This book is intended for designers and would-be designers of digital communication systems. To limit the scope to manageable proportions we have had to be selective in the topics covered and in the depth of coverage. In the case of advanced information, coding, and detection theory, for example, we have not tried to duplicate the in-depth coverage of many advanced textbooks, but rather have tried to cover those aspects directly relevant to the design of digital communication systems.

Book excerpt: Simulation may be defined as the discipline whose objective is to imitate one or more aspects of reality in a way that is as close to that reality as possible; indeed, an apt synonym that is gaining some currency is artificial reality. Under this definition, simulation is a very old discipline. Probably the first applications of simulation were to scale models of various types of dynamical structures or mechanical devices. Man has always looked for ways to "try things out" before building the real thing; this is the motivation behind any form of simulation. Thus, simulation of communication systems is concerned with imitating some aspects of the behavior of communication systems. It is implicit in our use of simulation that the medium (so to speak) for carrying it out is the digital computer. Computer-based modeling and simulation of communication systems has only developed in the last 20 years or so, since the advent of modern digital computers. A variety of modeling and simulation techniques have been developed and described in widely scattered journals, but until now there has not been a single volume devoted to the subject. We have tried to provide a unified framework that describes both the disciplines involved and the methods of modeling and simulating communication systems and subsystems. In the electronic era, the first type of computer simulation, in today's use of the term, took shape in the form of analog computers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital transmission has assumed a greater role in transmission networks of the world as well as in terrestrial microwave and satellite systems. The aim of this book is to present in detail the theoretical and practical problems encountered in digital microwave transmission. Some aspects of the theoretical background of the field, for example the effect of wave propagation on high-speed transmission, direct regenerators, and digital phase-locked loops, treated in the first four chapters, have not yet been dealt with in other books. In the chapters which follow, the practical implications of subsystems, such as modulators, carrier recovery circuits together with baseband signal processing, and the auxiliary equipment, are described. The book is designed to be of use not only for those relatively new to the field, but more especially for researchers and graduate students who wish to augment their knowledge.
