Book excerpt: TERI Energy Data Directory Yearbook, or TEDDY, is an annual publication brought out by TERI since 1986. TEDDY is often used as a reference in other peer-reviewed books and journals for energy and environment-related data. It gives an annual overview of the developments in the energy supplying and consuming sectors as well as the environment sector. It also provides a review of the government policies that have implications for these sectors of the Indian economy. The book provides extensive data collated from the various government ministries, on the energy supply sectors including coal and lignite, oil and gas, power, and renewable energy sources and technologies; energy demand sectors, namely, agriculture, industry, transport and domestic sectors; along with information related to environment and climate change. Graphs and maps have been used extensively to explain facts, that makes the book an interesting read. Besides, detailed tables have been provided at the end of each chapter, making TEDDY a comprehensive data book. Each edition of TEDDY contains India’s commercial energy balances for the past four years that provide comprehensive information on energy flows within different sectors of the economy and how they have been changing over time. These energy balances and conversion factors are a valuable ready reckoner for anybody working on energy and related sectors. This is the 25th anniversary edition of the book and a number of refinements have been made in the content and presentation to reflect the changing needs of the readers. At the same time, care has been taken to ensure that continuity of information is preserved so that researchers can study the trends over time in the energy sector.

This book was released on 2014-01-31 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the effects of climate change become ever more apparent and pressing, the discussion of sustainable practices and environmental protection is a common overture among the academic and scientific communities. However, in order to be truly effective, sustainable solutions must be tested and applied in real-world situations. Sustainability Science for Social, Economic, and Environmental Development investigates the role of sustainability in the everyday lives of ordinary citizens, including issues of economy, social interaction, exploitation of natural resources, and sources of renewable energy. In this book, researchers, policy makers, economists, scientists, and general readers will all find crucial insight into the parallels between theory and practice in sustainable development.

This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, when India celebrated 50 years of its Independence, TERI's study Growth with Resource Enhancement of Environment and Nature (GREEN) India 2047 assessed whether the country was moving on an environmentally sustainable path. The sequel to the study, Directions Innovations and Strategies for Harnessing Action (DISHA) for sustainable development, released in 2001, projected environmental and resource implications for the country by 2047 under two scenarios, that is, continuing in a business-as-usual mode and adopting a more sustainable development trajectory. The present study picks up the thread from 1997, examining environmental trends in the last decade, isolating underlying priority issues and identifying strategies that are needed to prevent or ameliorate environmental damage. The mandate of the present study, thus, is to go beyond reporting the state of India's environment. Through an evaluation of the major factors that are responsible for the present state and the characteristics of resulting impacts, the study provides an agenda for action.

Book Synopsis Perspectives on Power by : Jernej Letnar Černič
Download or read book Perspectives on Power written by Jernej Letnar Černič and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although ‘power’ can appear a vague term, the dichotomy between haves and have-nots, the desire to gain autonomy, and the dire consequences of subjugation, are three issues that resound across the arts and social sciences. In this book, postgraduate students from the constituent disciplines use the freedom of their positions as early-career researchers to boldly explore power relations. From a legal perspective, papers are included geared towards human rights issues and violations. Further, the applied perspectives from business and education researchers consider how access to wealth and education, and to equal education, can and must be achieved. Then, interpreted through the perspectives of anthropological, sociological, and historical approaches, power has become a resonant issue among the creations of culture and human interaction(s). Finally, within the ‘soft’ sciences, the very same preoccupations, as they appear in creative expression, are examined within literature and music. Indeed, through the twenty-one articles chosen for inclusion in this collection, distinct in their disciplinary origins, approaches and foci, together the authors are emphasising the many similarities that exist among the arts and social sciences subjects. ‘Perspectives on Power: An Interdisciplinary Approach’ was conceived as a result of the quality and reception of papers presented at the 2008 Moving Forward Postgraduate Conference, held at the University of Aberdeen. The volume comprises twenty-one articles on the theme of ‘power’, carefully chosen by the editorial team from in excess of eighty presentations. These represent and tender a wide range of scholarly approaches to and within the arts and social sciences; the remit of Moving Forward. The collection is aimed at scholars and scholarly institutions within the United Kingdom in particular, but contains contributions from scholars across the globe. The collection should especially appeal to and inspire delegates visiting the Moving Forward Postgraduate Conference in the years to come.

Book Synopsis Economics of energy use in crop production under irrigated situations of Raichur district, Karnataka by : Prasanna Kumar P. S
Download or read book Economics of energy use in crop production under irrigated situations of Raichur district, Karnataka written by Prasanna Kumar P. S and published by Prem Jose. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is the most important sector in the Indian economy and it is basically an energy conversion industry. At present, the use of renewable energy sources such as human labour and animal power is decreasing and the use of mechanical energy (non-renewable in nature) is increasing especially in intensive agriculture leading to adverse effect on farm employment and income distribution. Therefore, a study was carried out to assess economics of energy use in crop production under irrigated situations of Raichur district of Karnataka during the year 2009-10. It was found that the total energy used by small farmers was found to be significantly higher than that of medium and large famers in paddy and cotton cultivation. The total energy used for cotton cultivation was relatively higher (3.23%) than that of paddy cultivation. The output input energy ratio was significantly higher in case of paddy (8.75) than that of cotton (1.78) cultivation. Similar pattern was noticed both in the case of energy productivy and net energy return. Further, it was observed that the total cost of input energy in the case of paddy (Rs. 16,904.58/MJ) cultivation was relatively lower (1.23%) than that of cotton (Rs. 17,114.74/acre) cultivation. However, the net energy returns was considerably higher in case of paddy (Rs. 28,473.49/acre) than that of cotton (Rs. 9,773.83/acre) cultivation. It was found that the bullock energy deman (3,763.07 lakh MJ) was significantly higher (92.58%) than that of total bullock energy supply (279.24 lakh MJ) in Raichur district. Therefore, farmers may be encouraged to maintain and use bullock power in crop production which is cost effective so as to meet the deficit bullock energy supply in Raichur district and the existing transfer of technology programmes needed to be reoriented for use of energy issues in crop production.
