Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Free Electron Laser (FEL) provides a versatile method for producing laser light. Traditionally, FELs are complicated in design and occupy large research facilities. The primary goal of this thesis is to investigate a particular FEL design that is small in size and operates in the terahertz (THz) frequency regime. The optics materials requirements are explored for power levels ranging from mW to kW. Additionally, as part of a simpler design and in spite of the large amount of diffraction present at THz wavelengths, a waveguide will not be utilized as others have done previously. Laser beam clipping, which is defined as the absorption of the laser beam at the outer edges of the diffracted mode, and a shortened undulator are investigated as methods to support the elimination of the waveguide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of theoretical research on Free Electron Lasers (FELs) are presented. Basic FEL physics is reviewed, using a previously developed classical theory. Numerical simulations based on this theory are described, and numerous examples show how they have been used to increase understanding of existing FELs and to help plan new experiments. Single-mode simulations that follow the evolution of a single-frequency plane wave provide insight into important physical effects in FELs. Results show how these simulations are used to evaluate new FEL designs such as inverse-tapered and step-tapered undulators. Longitudinal multimode simulations model plane waves using finite-length electron and optical pulses. These simulations are used to study coherence evolution in various FEL designs, and to explain effects such as limit-cycle behavior. Transverse multimode simulations that allow for the finite transverse dimensions of the optical wavefronts include the effects of optical mode distortion. These simulations are currently being used to design short Rayleigh length optical cavities that are less sensitive to mirror damage. Four- dimensional simulations are also described, which follow the optical wavefront in x, y, z, and t, including the effects of multiple longitudinal and transverse modes. These simulations are computationally intensive, but may play an important role in the design of future high-power FELs.

Book excerpt: Terahertz (THz) radiation has generated much recent interest due to its ability to penetrate deep into many organic materials without the damage associated with ionizing radiations. Smith-Purcell free-electron lasers (SPFELs) offer a viable path toward generating copious amounts of narrow-band THz radiation. In this paper we present numerical simulations, performed with the conformal finite-difference time-domain electromagnetic solver VORPAL of a SPFEL operating in the superradiant regime. We first explore the standard (single grating) configuration and investigate the impact of incoming beamparameters. We also present a new concept based a double grating configuration to efficiently bunch the electron beam, followed by a single grating to produce super-radiant SP radiation.

Almost everything we do, be it work, travel, communication, or entertainment, all depend on some feature of semiconductor technology. Comprehensive Semiconductor Science and Technology, Six Volume Set captures the breadth of this important field, and presents it in a single source to the large audience who study, make, and exploit semiconductors. Previous attempts at this achievement have been abbreviated, and have omitted important topics. Written and Edited by a truly international team of experts, this work delivers an objective yet cohesive global review of the semiconductor world. The work is divided into three sections. The first section is concerned with the fundamental physics of semiconductors, showing how the electronic features and the lattice dynamics change drastically when systems vary from bulk to a low-dimensional structure and further to a nanometer size. Throughout this section there is an emphasis on the full understanding of the underlying physics. The second section deals largely with the transformation of the conceptual framework of solid state physics into devices and systems which require the growth of extremely high purity, nearly defect-free bulk and epitaxial materials. The last section is devoted to exploitation of the knowledge described in the previous sections to highlight the spectrum of devices we see all around us. Provides a comprehensive global picture of the semiconductor world Each of the work's three sections presents a complete description of one aspect of the whole Written and Edited by a truly international team of experts

Book excerpt: As interest in high power free electron lasers (FELs) has increased, the FEL and accelerator communities have been faced with the need to develop high bunch charge, high repetition rate, low emittance electron sources for use as the driving accelerators for FELs. A novel superconducting, radio-frequency (SRF) gun/booster has been designed by and built for the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) FEL Beam Physics Lab in collaboration with Niowave, Inc., for studying this electron source regime. The NPS SRF gun/booster operates at 500 MHz and is based upon a quarter-wave structure. It incorporates many features that make it desirable for studying the cathodes and transport regimes necessary to explore high bunch charge beams, including adjustable field focusing, short transport out of the gun, and the ability to change cathode types and materials. After attaining "first beam" in June 2010, the NPS gun has been established as the first SRF electron gun in the United States. Initial results show excellent agreement with simulation with bunch charges of 110 pC and transverse emittance estimates of 4 mm-mrad. Additionally, a modal analysis tool for the NPS FEL simulation software is developed based upon the Hermite-Gaussian basis set. Using a minimization of mode coefficients approach, we decompose output optical fields for amplifier FEL designs and experiments for FEL optimization and comparison of laser output fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free electron laser (FEL) technology continues to advance, providing alternative solutions to existing and potential problems. The capabilities of an FEL with respect to tunability, power and efficiency make it an attractive choice when moving into new laser utilization fields. The initial design parameters, for any new system, offer a good base to begin system simulation tests in an effort to determine the best possible design. This is a study of the Novosibirsk design which is a prototype for the proposed SELENE FEL. The design uses a three-section, low-power optical klystron followed by a single-pass, high-power radiator. This system is inherently sensitive to electron beam quality, but affords flexibility in achieving the final design. The performance of the system is studied using the initial parameters. An FEL, configured as a simple, two section optical klystron is studied to determine the basic operating characteristics of a high current FEL klystron.

Book excerpt: Modeling and simulation have proven invaluable to the design of various systems and planning of many experiments since the free-electron laser was invented in the 1970s. This thesis illustrates methods used for these tasks and for the validation and development of further theory. FEL systems and their components are described, briefly discussing how they fit into design considerations. Basic theory of FEL operation is reviewed, including the resonance condition, FEL wave and pendulum equations, and the concepts of undulator taper, extraction and beam quality. Two computer programs used for FEL simulation (FEL3D/FEL4D, developed at the Naval Postgraduate School, and Ginger, developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) are discussed and compared, then applied to specific FEL cases. The cases studied serve to evaluate key performance characteristics of FELs. The final case study directly compares output from the two programs. In addition to this type of physics simulation, computer tools are also vital for component design. Relevant methods are illustrated using the example of an electrostatic cathode test cell and drawings made using the Los Alamos National Laboratories design tool, Poisson Superfish. After reviewing the principles involved and system constraints, a new test cell is designed for use with future NPS experiments. The effects of anodecathode spacing and anode aperture size are examined for two different anode configurations and recommendations are made for future design iterations.
