Book Synopsis Elevated-temperature Tensile Properties of Alloyed Tungsten Fiber Composites by : Donald W. Petrasek
Download or read book Elevated-temperature Tensile Properties of Alloyed Tungsten Fiber Composites written by Donald W. Petrasek and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of selected alloying elements on the elevated temperature tensile properties of tungsten fiber reinforced composites were studied. Composites were made of copper, copper- 2 percent chromium and copper- 10 percent nickel reinforced with various volume percents of uniaxially oriented tungsten fibers. The composites were tested in tension at temperatures up to 1800 degrees F.A comparison of the elevated-temperature tensile properties of tungsten fiber - copper alloy composites, representing soluble systems, was made with tungsten fiber - copper composites, representing a mutually insoluble system. The effects of alloying on the elevated-temperature tensile properties of tungsten fiber reinforced composites was also studied. A linear relation existed at elevated temperatures between tensile strength and volume percent fiber content for all the systems investigated. The copper alloy composites were weaker in tension at high volume percent fiber contents than copper composites in which alloying with the fiber did not occur. The tensile strength of the alloyed tungsten fiber decreased with increasing penetration of the alloying element into the tungsten fiber.
Book Synopsis Effects of Interstitial Impurities on the Low-temperature Tensile Properties of Tungsten by : Joseph R. Stephens
Download or read book Effects of Interstitial Impurities on the Low-temperature Tensile Properties of Tungsten written by Joseph R. Stephens and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was undertaken to determine the effects of the interstitial impurities oxygen and carbon on the mechanical properties of polycrystalline tungsten and high-purity tungsten single crystals. Results of tensile tests showed that additions of both oxygen and carbon to polycrystalline tungsten produced a marked increase in the ductile to brittle transition temperature. Oxygen and carbon produced a much smaller increase in the transition temperature of the single-crystal specimens compared with equivalent amounts of impurities in the polycrystalline specimens. Addition of oxygen to polycrystalline tungsten lowered both the ultimate tensile strength and the yield strength, but had no measurable effect on the strength properties of single-crystal specimens. Carbon additions to both polycrystalline and single-crystal specimens did not affect the ultimate tensile strength; however, a large increase in the yield strength resulted. The results suggest that oxygen embrittlement in tungsten is caused by grain-boundary segregation, while carbon embrittlement results from an interaction between carbon atoms and dislocations within the tungsten lattice.
