Book excerpt: Winning the spiritual Race does not depend upon how fast you Run; it is determined by how you Run. There is a right way and wrong way to Run. Having an organized Training plan is your only chance to make it to the Finish Line. This book study will become a personal Training manual. Run will give you instructions and resources that will equip you to win the Race. The Christian life is often described as a Race one designed by God. In it, we are called to fulfill His purposes for us. We need to be in spiritual shape. Trying to run a marathon is very different from Training to run a marathon. Lets get fit we cant quit when the going gets rough. We can go through all the religious stunts, but unless there is a desire to Train to be like Jesus, few make it and many fall to defeat. A great factor in success is consistency. We may start out in front, leading, but if we do not stay consistent, we become entangled in the affairs of this life. God has called you to Run the Race set before you! Fall on your knees through this study and embrace your Race! Its possible to Run the entire Race, and even cross the Finish Line, only to realize you have been disqualified because you did not Run in such a way. Life is not a game with no lasting consequences. The way we Run has eternal consequences. Lace up, friend; you have a Race to win!

It took me over 3,000 pages in ten volumes to say How and What is Important to Believe. It seeks to explain by experience who Jesus is, who God is, who the Holy Spirit is, what the Bible is, why it is crucial to life that we believe in them, what “belief” is, what “to be saved” is, just how Salvation is effected, what the “take-away” benefits are, and how to find meaning and purpose in life. “As said, each of these ten volumes is able to stand alone as God’s Book of Life, portraying Life with the Holy Spirit by belief in the Christ of Jesus as Savior to eternal life with God. The ten volumes relate my Story of Writing God's Book of Life, using nonfiction essays and poetry with daily help of divine intervention in producing the seven-Logos Work of ten volumes, and the four supporting volumes. All seek to fully understand and explain this work inspired by the Holy Spirit, the Christ of Jesus. “The action of God fulfilled for him in seven years all of Rodger Crafton's dreams of becoming a writer of poetry and prose, an armchair philosopher, and an artist working in his new, upstairs garage atelier.”---R. The courage of the people in these stories is breathtaking. So, too, is the impact and imagination of their actions. These mostly little known stories—including those written from eyewitness experience of the events and situations described—reveal the role ordinary people have played in achieving extraordinary change. “In the real world, it will never happen,” the skeptics love to tell us. As this book so vividly shows, the skeptics have repeatedly been proven wrong.Stories in this include how:· Strollers, toilet paper, and illegal ketchup helped end forty years of one-party Communist rule· Dogs (and what they wore) helped protestors humiliate a murderous regime· Internet videos about cuddly animals infuriated a repressive government which tried—and failed—to ban the craze· Football crowds found ways of singing the national anthem so as to defy a junta of torturers, now in jail· Women successfully put pressure on warlords to end one of Africa’s bloodiest wars· The singing of old folksongs hastened the collapse of an empire sustained by tanksIf you think individuals are powerless to change the world, read this remarkable book and you’ll surely change your mind.

Intended to help preachers prepare sermons the commentary series is essentially biblical and evangelical catholic. This 19th century commentary has served as a standard reference for more than a century. Many early reviewers regarded Schaff's edition with his additional material as superior to the original. It has proven to be a complete and useful Commentary and continues to prove especially valuable to ministers. It contains critical annotations of the text and its translation, and a threefold commentary, exegetical, doctrinal, and homiletical. Under these three heads the text is viewed from every aspect.

Book excerpt: Five decades ago, I was challenged to read the Moynihan Report (1965). Then and now, I take issue with much of the content, which smacks of deficit thinking, blaming the victim, and a blindness or almost total disregard for how systemic racism and social injustices contribute to family structures. I recall being professionally and personally offended by interpretations of single?parent families, which were often negative and hopeless. Moral development, criminal activity, poor educational outcomes, poverty, and apathy of many kinds were placed squarely on the shoulders of these families, especially if the families were/are headed by Black mothers. Eurocentric and middle class notions of ‘real’ families like those depicted on TV shows and movies dominate, then and now, what is deemed healthy in terms of family structures – with the polemic conclusion that nuclear families are the best and sometimes only structure in which children must be raised. These colorblind, economic blind, and racist blind studies, reports, theories, and folktales have failed to do justice to the families in which there is one caregiver. Their stories of woe and mayhem make the news and guide policies and procedures. The stories of children who have been resilient have been unheard and silenced, they have been under?reported and relegated to the status of ‘exception to the rule’. Perhaps they are exceptions, but there are more exceptions than we may know. This book is designed with those stories of resilience and success in mind. The book is not an attempt to glorify single?parent families, but such families are prevalent and increasing. High divorce rates are impactful. And some parents have chosen to not marry, which is their right. While not glorifying single?parent families, we are also not demonizing them or telling their stories void of context. Yes, income will often be low(er), time will be compromised when divided between offspring, work, and other obligations. Likewise, we are not glorifying two?parent families as being ideal; their context matters too. How healthy are married couples who don’t really love or even like each other? How healthy are those parents who have separate sleeping arrangements/bedrooms? How healthy are those families who have oppositional parenting styles and goals for their children? This is the 50th anniversary of the Moynihan Report, and I am concerned that another 50 years will pass that fails to balance out the stories of single?parent families, mainly those whose children succeed and defy the odds so often unexpected of them. I agree with Cohen, co?author of the updated report: "The preoccupation with strengthening marriage as the best route to reducing poverty and inequality has been a policymaking folly”. Further, 50 years after Moynihan released the controversial report, The Negro Family: The Case for National Action, a new brief by the Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR) and the Council on Contemporary Families (CCF) titled, "Moynihan's Half Century: Have We Gone to Hell in a Hand Basket?," finds that the changes in family structure that concerned him have indeed continued, becoming widespread among Whites as well, but that they do not explain recent trends in poverty and inequality. In fact, a number of the social ills Moynihan assumed would accompany these changes in family structure—such as rising rates of poverty, school failure, crime, and violence—have instead decreased. Book excerpt: Authors from eighteen countries give us their perspectives on biblical principles and cultural expressions of spirituality particularly as the church engages in God’s mission. The anthology of texts enriches our understanding of the depth and the meaning of being spiritual and the diversity of forms to live out the Christian faith. The issue today is how spirituality should direct and guide a daily life as followers of Jesus in the engagement in the mission of God. No doubt that it has to do with our inner life and our relationship to God, but it is in showing our love and concern to others that we prove our love to God, according to the Apostle John (1 John 4). Mission without spirituality will only be a human effort to convince people of religious theories. Spirituality without a missionary involvement of the church will not express God’s desire that the transforming gospel reaches every person. This book will help you rethink your understanding of what is spiritual, revisit your own spiritual journey, and appreciate the different forms of spirituality as they are described and performed around the globe.

Book excerpt: "I like to think of the work of The Holy Spirit in the lives of men and women as art." Spiritual life is not just a gift; it is a skill we must work to develop. Using Paul's letter to the Philippians as her guide, Bible teacher Jill Briscoe uncovers eight "spiritual arts" that Christians are called to practice regularly: contentment, intimacy, suffering, simplicity, ministry, tranquility, humility, and harmony. Jill pulls no punches in challenging Christian readers to do their part. Spiritual Arts is a discovery study of practices we need to learn if we are to live life as God intended--full of great joy, deeper intimacy with God, and an exciting impact in the lives of others. With patience, wit, and probing questions, Jill challenges the faithful to a different ethic and a more active, focused way to follow Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tenacity in Children examines how multiple generations of parents and caregivers raised children to become successful adults. Until relatively recent times in human history, there were no schools or organized institutions, nor were there parenting books. Rather, caregivers depended on the seven important instincts that evolved across tens of thousands of years in the human species. This volume highlights the ways in which these instincts are more important than ever in preparing children for tomorrow’s successes. Key areas of coverage include individual chapters devoted to examining each of the seven instincts – intuitive optimism, intrinsic motivation, compassionate empathy, simultaneous intelligence, genuine altruism, virtuous responsibility, and measured fairness – as well as practical strategies to guide children in acquiring and fine-tuning these essential human instincts. Tenacity in Children provides a solid foundation to prepare children for a resilient and happy future. It offers well-defined guideposts for adults committed to providing every child with the opportunity to access, strengthen, and employ these instincts as they negotiate childhood and passage into adult life. This book also serves as a rich resource for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students in mental health and public health disciplines as well as many interrelated fields as we all strive to promote the well-being of children. The collaboration of these two esteemed psychologists has been impacting on our field for decades. This new book continues that tradition. – Richard D. Lavoie, M.A., M.Ed. Author of It's So Much Work to Be Your Friend: Helping Children with Learning Disabilities Find Social Success Tenacity in Children is the perfect balance between concepts, knowledge, scientific discourse, practical ideas and touching stories that truly illustrate the principles shared in the book. This book should reach the hands of every person dedicated to working with children. – Encarni Gallardo, MBA, CBM Executive Director, Children’s Service Society of Utah Written in an easy-to-read, narrative style, Drs. Goldstein and Brooks impart their innovative concept of Tenacity in Children along with its seven essential instincts by using heartwarming stories, personal and professional insights, research, and wisdom. – Joyce C.
