Book Synopsis Several Complex Variables with Connections to Algebraic Geometry and Lie Groups by : Joseph L. Taylor
Download or read book Several Complex Variables with Connections to Algebraic Geometry and Lie Groups written by Joseph L. Taylor and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text presents an integrated development of core material from several complex variables and complex algebraic geometry, leading to proofs of Serre's celebrated GAGA theorems relating the two subjects, and including applications to the representation theory of complex semisimple Lie groups. It includes a thorough treatment of the local theory using the tools of commutative algebra, an extensive development of sheaf theory and the theory of coherent analytic and algebraicsheaves, proofs of the main vanishing theorems for these categories of sheaves, and a complete proof of the finite dimensionality of the cohomology of coherent sheaves on compact varieties. The vanishing theorems have a wide variety of applications and these are covered in detail. Of particular interest arethe last three chapters, which are devoted to applications of the preceding material to the study of the structure theory and representation theory of complex semisimple Lie groups. Included are introductions to harmonic analysis, the Peter-Weyl theorem, Lie theory and the structure of Lie algebras, semisimple Lie algebras and their representations, algebraic groups and the structure of complex semisimple Lie groups. All of this culminates in Milicic's proof of the Borel-Weil-Bott theorem, which makes extensive use of the material developed earlier in the text. There are numerous examples and exercises in each chapter. This modern treatment of a classic point of view would be an excellent text for a graduate course on several complex variables, as well as a useful reference for theexpert.
Book Synopsis Theorems and Problems in Functional Analysis by : A. A. Kirillov
Download or read book Theorems and Problems in Functional Analysis written by A. A. Kirillov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even the simplest mathematical abstraction of the phenomena of reality the real line-can be regarded from different points of view by different mathematical disciplines. For example, the algebraic approach to the study of the real line involves describing its properties as a set to whose elements we can apply" operations," and obtaining an algebraic model of it on the basis of these properties, without regard for the topological properties. On the other hand, we can focus on the topology of the real line and construct a formal model of it by singling out its" continuity" as a basis for the model. Analysis regards the line, and the functions on it, in the unity of the whole system of their algebraic and topological properties, with the fundamental deductions about them obtained by using the interplay between the algebraic and topological structures. The same picture is observed at higher stages of abstraction. Algebra studies linear spaces, groups, rings, modules, and so on. Topology studies structures of a different kind on arbitrary sets, structures that give mathe matical meaning to the concepts of a limit, continuity, a neighborhood, and so on. Functional analysis takes up topological linear spaces, topological groups, normed rings, modules of representations of topological groups in topological linear spaces, and so on. Thus, the basic object of study in functional analysis consists of objects equipped with compatible algebraic and topological structures.

Book Synopsis Functional Analysis and Semi-groups by : Einar Hille
Download or read book Functional Analysis and Semi-groups written by Einar Hille and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996-02-06 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in 1952 it became obvious that a new printing would be needed, and new advances in the theory called for extensive revision. It has been completely rewritten, mostly by Phillips, and much has been added while keeping the existing framework. Thus, the algebraic tools play a major role, and are introduced early, leading to a more satisfactory operational calculus and spectral theory. The Laplace-Stieltjes transform methods, used by Hille, have not been replaced but rather supplemented by the new tools. - Foreword.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Hilbert Space by : N. Young
Download or read book An Introduction to Hilbert Space written by N. Young and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-07-21 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is an introduction to the theory of Hilbert space and its applications. The notion of Hilbert space is central in functional analysis and is used in numerous branches of pure and applied mathematics. Dr Young has stressed applications of the theory, particularly to the solution of partial differential equations in mathematical physics and to the approximation of functions in complex analysis. Some basic familiarity with real analysis, linear algebra and metric spaces is assumed, but otherwise the book is self-contained. It is based on courses given at the University of Glasgow and contains numerous examples and exercises (many with solutions). Thus it will make an excellent first course in Hilbert space theory at either undergraduate or graduate level and will also be of interest to electrical engineers and physicists, particularly those involved in control theory and filter design.

Download or read book Ordered Sets and Lattices II written by and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This indispensable reference source contains a wealth of information on lattice theory. The book presents a survey of virtually everything published in the fields of partially ordered sets, semilattices, lattices, and Boolean algebras that was reviewed in Referativnyi Zhurnal Matematika from mid-1982 to the end of 1985. A continuation of a previous volume (the English translation of which was published by the AMS in 1989, as volume 141 in Translations - Series 2), this comprehensive work contains more than 2200 references. Many of the papers covered here were originally published in virtually inaccessible places. The compilation of the volume was directed by Milan Kolibiar of Comenius University at Bratislava and Lev A. Skornyakov of Moscow University. Of interest to mathematicians, as well as to philosophers and computer scientists in certain areas, this unique compendium is a must for any mathematical library.

Book Synopsis Principles of Functional Analysis by : Martin Schechter
Download or read book Principles of Functional Analysis written by Martin Schechter and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001-11-13 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent book provides an elegant introduction to functional analysis ... carefully selected problems ... This is a nicely written book of great value for stimulating active work by students. It can be strongly recommended as an undergraduate or graduate text, or as a comprehensive book for self-study. --European Mathematical Society Newsletter Functional analysis plays a crucial role in the applied sciences as well as in mathematics. It is a beautiful subject that can be motivated and studied for its own sake. In keeping with this basic philosophy, the author has made this introductory text accessible to a wide spectrum of students, including beginning-level graduates and advanced undergraduates. The exposition is inviting, following threads of ideas, describing each as fully as possible, before moving on to a new topic. Supporting material is introduced as appropriate, and only to the degree needed. Some topics are treated more than once, according to the different contexts in which they arise. The prerequisites are minimal, requiring little more than advanced calculus and no measure theory. The text focuses on normed vector spaces and their important examples, Banach spaces and Hilbert spaces. The author also includes topics not usually found in texts on the subject. This Second Edition incorporates many new developments while not overshadowing the book's original flavor. Areas in the book that demonstrate its unique character have been strengthened. In particular, new material concerning Fredholm and semi-Fredholm operators is introduced, requiring minimal effort as the necessary machinery was already in place. Several new topics are presented, but relate to only those concepts and methods emanating from other parts of the book. These topics include perturbation classes, measures of noncompactness, strictly singular operators, and operator constants. Overall, the presentation has been refined, clarified, and simplified, and many new problems have been added. The book is recommended to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and pure and applied research mathematicians interested in functional analysis and operator theory.
