Book excerpt: The Newbery Medal–winning author of Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! gives readers a virtuoso performance in verse in this profoundly original epic pitched just right for fans of poetry, history, mythology, and fantasy. Welcome to ancient Greece as only genius storyteller Laura Amy Schlitz can conjure it. In a warlike land of wind and sunlight, “ringed by a restless sea,” live Rhaskos and Melisto, spiritual twins with little in common beyond the violent and mysterious forces that dictate their lives. A Thracian slave in a Greek household, Rhaskos is as common as clay, a stable boy worth less than a donkey, much less a horse. Wrenched from his mother at a tender age, he nurtures in secret, aided by Socrates, his passions for art and philosophy. Melisto is a spoiled aristocrat, a girl as precious as amber but willful and wild. She’ll marry and be tamed—the curse of all highborn girls—but risk her life for a season first to serve Artemis, goddess of the hunt. Bound by destiny, Melisto and Rhaskos—Amber and Clay—never meet in the flesh. By the time they do, one of them is a ghost. But the thin line between life and death is just one boundary their unlikely friendship crosses. It takes an army of snarky gods and fearsome goddesses, slaves and masters, mothers and philosophers to help shape their story into a gorgeously distilled, symphonic tour de force. Blending verse, prose, and illustrated archeological “artifacts,” this is a tale that vividly transcends time, an indelible reminder of the power of language to illuminate the over- and underworlds of human history.

This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hazard, Kentucky is the setting for this historical story enhanced with some fiction, amazingly well told by author Wayne Combs, the great grandson of Bad Tom Smith. "Bad Tom" Smith was a notorious and murderous character in the late 1800s and as a result of his misdeeds was hanged in the town square for all to see. Still, there is more to a man than his public reputation, Bad Tom Smith was also a family man. This fast paced and realistic book will fill the reader in on many little-known facts, yet told in a storytelling fashion for enjoyable reading. But watch out, many of Americans have roots in Kentucky! You might find your own ties to this infamous character!

Book Synopsis Soldiers' Stories of the War (Illustrations) by : Walter Wood
Download or read book Soldiers' Stories of the War (Illustrations) written by Walter Wood and published by CHAPMAN AND HALL. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the stories in this volume are told by men who were seen personally, and who, with one or two exceptions—cases of soldiers who had returned to the front—read the typescripts of their narratives, so that accuracy should be secured. The narrators spoke while the impressions of fighting and hardships and things seen were still strong and clear; in several cases full notes had been made or diaries kept, and reference to these records was of great value in preparing the stories. When seeing an informant I specially asked that a true tale should be told, and I believe that no unreliable details were knowingly given. I have been fortunate in getting a good deal of exclusive matter—the full record of the noble achievement of L Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, for example, has not been given anywhere in such detail as is presented here, and the same remark applies to the story of the three torpedoed cruisers. During the earlier periods of the war British soldiers told me tales of barbarities and outrages committed by German troops which were so terrible that it was impossible to believe them, and I omitted many of these details from the finished stories; but I know now, from reading the Report of the Committee on Alleged German Outrages, presided over by Viscount Bryce, formerly British Ambassador at Washington, that even the most dreadful of the statements did not do more than touch the fringe of the appalling truth. Though much has been already published in the form of tales and letters from our soldiers at the front, yet I hope that this collection of stories will be accepted as a contribution from the British fighting man to the general history of the earlier stages of the war—those memorable preliminary operations which have made a deep and indelible impression on the British race throughout the world.

Book Synopsis The True Story of Noah by : Kerry L. Barger
Download or read book The True Story of Noah written by Kerry L. Barger and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noah's "Hill of Salvation" has now been found!! You can examine it for yourself using modern satellite imagery! "The True Story of Noah explores the origins of this well known biblical story from a unique angle. Using related literature and information provided, Barger probes further to understand the likeliest resting spot of the ark. In the process, he provides a deluge of enriching historical information that revolves around Noah and the origins of man. Barger's discourse is intriguing and would particularly spark engaging conversation in a college humanities lecture... references to many familiar figures from creation myths and stories, such as The Epic of Gilgamesh, will keep the reader involved. This book is just as much about the story of how Noah came to be as it is about the final resting spot of the ark. For serious readers of the humanities who have a passion for ancient, biblical history and how it came to be, Barger's story is a worthwhile read." --Mihir Shah, The U.S. Review of Books
