Exploring the major themes found in Luke's gospel, including the ways of God-promise, fulfillment, salvation, and the work of the Holy Spirit-Koester shows us how to live in this world-in vocation and compassion, worship and prayer. Each of the 47 devotions (one for each day during Lent and Holy Week) is freestanding, but the themes link groups of devotions together, lending depth and continuity to them. Vivid word pictures, crisp retelling of texts and creative allegory spark delight in the beauty of Luke's Gospel and a desire to follow Christ. Each meditation focuses on a key point from the reading in Luke and offers excellent questions for small-group discussion or for individual reflection, as well as prayer.

Book excerpt: The essays in this volume concern the points of intersection between analytic philosophy and the philosophy of the exact sciences. More precisely, it concern connections between knowledge in mathematics and the exact sciences, on the one hand, and the conceptual foundations of knowledge in general. Its guiding idea is that, in contemporary philosophy of science, there are profound problems of theoretical interpretation-- problems that transcend both the methodological concerns of general philosophy of science, and the technical concerns of philosophers of particular sciences. A fruitful approach to these problems combines the study of scientific detail with the kind of conceptual analysis that is characteristic of the modern analytic tradition. Such an approach is shared by these contributors: some primarily known as analytic philosophers, some as philosophers of science, but all deeply aware that the problems of analysis and interpretation link these fields together.

Book excerpt: You’re young? Check. You’ve felt God’s tap on the shoulder, like he’s got something for you to do with your life? Right. But you’re not exactly sure what it is, or how to get there? Exactly. If that’s you, then here’s a great guide to help you find your way to whatever it is God has for you in life. You may be surprised to learn that a very famous person in the Bible found himself in a similar place. David was just watching some sheep, but God made it clear he was destined to do something a bit more meaningful and important–David was going to be king. As a young man he had to learn how to “live into” his calling–become like a king before ever putting on the crown. You probably won’t be joining the royal family any time soon. But you can still learn a lot about life–your life, your destiny–by taking a good look at David’s life. David had a dream and caught a glimpse of his purpose. He just didn’t know how to realize it, how to live until he did, and how to wait for it proactively. Maybe that’s you, too. In this amusing, amazing, and very surprising guidebook, Rob Brendle can help you get there from here.

In selling high-value products or services: 'closing' increases your chance of success; it is essential to describe the benefits of your product or service to the customer; objection handling is an important skill; open questions are more effective than closed questions. All false, says this provocative book. Neil Rackham and his team studied more than 35,000 sales calls made by 10,000 sales people in 23 countries over 12 years. Their findings revealed that many of the methods developed for selling low-value goods just don‘t work for major sales. Rackham went on to introduce his SPIN-Selling method. SPIN describes the whole selling process: Situation questions Problem questions Implication questions Need-payoff questions SPIN-Selling provides you with a set of simple and practical techniques which have been tried in many of today‘s leading companies with dramatic improvements to their sales performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philosophy of Time Society grew out of a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar on the Philosophy of Time offered by George Schlesinger in 1991. The members of that seminar wanted to promote interest in the philosophy of time and Jon N. Turgerson offered to become the first Director of the society with the initial costs underwritten by the Drake University Center for the Humanities. Thus, the Philosophy of Time Society (PTS) was formed in 1993. Its goal is to promote the study of the philosophy of time from a broad analytic perspective, and to provide a forum as an affiliated group with the American Philosophical Association, to discuss the issues in and related to the philosophy of time. The society held its first meeting during the Eastern Division of the AP A in Atlanta, George, in December 1993. In 1997 I began my tenure as Executive Director of PTS and with my term ending in 2000, I decided to put together a volume of selected papers read at PTS meetings over the years. The result is the present volume. It contains some of the latest developments in the field, including discussions of recent books by Michael Tooley, Time, Tense, and Causation, and D. H. Mellor, Real Time II, and much more. The main issue in the philosophy of time is and remains the status of temporal becoming and the passage of time.

Book excerpt: WHY GOD is an exploration of the "concept of God" and its relation to reality. It searches for evidence as to the existence or non-existence of "God" in a variety of disciplines. The principles inherent in consciousness, time, motion, space, and quantum physics produce interesting clues in the search for God. A critical look at rational thought as practiced by mankind provides evidence of our limited ability to objectively define the parameters of not only God but also the "real world" within which we exist. The book reaches out to those either deeply religious or only mildly curious as to what God really means now and the possibility that there may be a measure of truth to this enduring sense of a cosmic deity. It is a curious man's guide to exploring an old concept in a new way. If God exists, can he be contacted? What does he look like, and where can he be found? What does Satan say about the existence of "God"? A chapter is included for Satan's rebuttal to the argument that God may, in fact, exist.
