Book excerpt: The phenomenal development of writing and literary creation among the francophone communities of eastern Canada has gone largely unnoticed and unprobed outside the fragmented land of Acadia. Writing Acadia attempts for the first time to observe from a distance the invention of literature in oral Acadia, and to interpret, assess and order the manifold manifestations of the transition from epic story-telling to writing as a means of nation-building. Having begun to write, modern Acadia has truly (re)written herself into existence, an existence now threatened by postmodern unwriting of literature. Destined not only for specialists but also and especially for readers with a general interest in literature, including students of all levels, Writing Acadia presents generous samples of Acadian poetry, drama and prose, with accompanying English translations.

Book Synopsis Anthology of Black Humor by : André Breton
Download or read book Anthology of Black Humor written by André Breton and published by City Lights Books. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first publication in English of the anthology that contains Breton’s definitive statement on l’humour noir, one of the seminal concepts of Surrealism, and his provocative assessments of the writers he most admired. While some of the authors featured in The Anthology of Black Humor are already well known to American readers—Swift, Kafka, Rimbaud, Poe, Lewis Carroll, and Baudelaire among them (and even then, Breton’s selections are often surprising)—many others are sure to come as a revelation. The entries range from the acerbic aphorisms of Swift, Lichtenberg, and Duchamp to the theatrical slapstick of Christian Dietrich Grabbe, from the wry missives of Rimbaud and Jacques Vache to the manic paranoia of Dali, from the ferocious iconoclasm of Alfred Jarry and Arthur Craven to the offhand hilarity of Apollinaire at his most spontaneous. For each of the forty-five authors included, Breton has provided an enlightening biographical and critical preface, situating both the writer and the work in the context of black humor—a partly macabre, partly ironic, and often absurd turn of spirit that Breton defined as "a superior revolt of the mind." "Anthologies can aim to be groundbreaking or thought-provoking; few can be said to have introduced a new phrase—or a new concept—into the language. No one had ever used the term "black humour" before this one came along, unless, perhaps, it was from a racial angle."—The Guardian Andre Breton (1896-1966), the founder and principal theorist of the Surrealist movement, is one of the major literary figures of the past century. His best-known works in English translation include Nadja, Mad Love, The Manifestoes of Surrealism, The Magnetic Fields (with Philippe Soupault), and Earthlight. Mark Polizzotti is the author of Revolution of the Mind: The Life of Andre Breton.

Book Synopsis Transitions by : Constancio S. Asumen Jr.
Download or read book Transitions written by Constancio S. Asumen Jr. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shelley famously observed long ago and far away that poetry is the language of the imagination. This authors experience with it has been that it is more the expression of the spontaneous celebration of being alive, far beyond just the joys of living. Over and above what is conceivable, the delicious agony and poignant ecstasy of the tangible here and now constitute a compelling impetus for poetical indulgent escapades. The turmoil of the soul itself, in the entirety of its manifold dimensions and levels of complexity, is the proper province of poetry. Showcased in this books pages are the unadulterated relics of the struggle of the authors soul to stay whole, afloat and above the corrosive vortex of the ruins of time. Bereft of elegance the verses may be, they are nonetheless the embodiment of the struggle of a soul in search of a justifiable and sustainable meaning for being. The collection includes every title committed into writing which could be salvaged from the ravages of aging. This dates as far back as 1961 when the author was the editor-in-chief of the high school magazine, The Cub Farmer. More titles were written but fell by the wayside. Thanks mostly to electronic storage with the advent of word processing technology, retrieval has mostly been facilitated. All of the titles have been posted at the online venue AllPoetry.com of which the author had been a member over the last thirty months or so. More than half of the titles were minted with the nom de plume byline Ace Lilacs. This was attendant to the venues limiting the author character string length to thirteen, truncating the full name to a rather awkward Constancio Su.
