Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at the International Conference on Temperature-Fatigue Interaction, held in Paris, May 29-31, 2001, organised by the Fatigue Committee of the Societé Française de Métallurgie et de Matériaux (SF2M), under the auspices of the European Structural Integrity Society. The conference disseminated recent research results and promoting the interaction and collaboration amongst materials scientists, mechanical engineers and design engineers. Many engineering components and structures used in the automotive, aerospace, power generation and many other industries experience cyclic mechanical loads at high temperature or temperature transients causing thermally induced stresses. The increase of operating temperature and thermal mechanical loading trigger the interaction with time-dependent phenomena such as creep and environmental effects (oxidation, corrosion). A large number of metallic materials were investigated including aluminium alloys for the automotive industry, steels and cast iron for the automotive industry and materials forming, stainless steels for power plants, titanium, composites, intermetallic alloys and nickel base superalloys for aircraft industry, polymers. Important progress was observed in testing practice for high temperature behaviour, including environment and thermo-mechanical loading as well as in observation techniques. A large problem which was emphasized is to know precisely service loading cycles under non-isothermal conditions. This was considered critical for numerous thermal fatigue problems discussed in this conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From concept to application, this book describes the method of strain-range partitioning for analyzing time-dependent fatigue. Creep (time-dependent) deformation is first introduced for monotonic and cyclic loading. Multiple chapters then discuss strain-range partitioning in details for multi-axial loading conditions and how different loading permutations can lead to different micro-mechanistic effects. Notably, the total-strain method of strain-range partitioning (SRP) is described, which is a methodology that sees use in several industries. Examples from aerospace illustrate applications, and methods for predicting time-dependent metal fatigue are critiqued.

Book excerpt: The global energy consumption is increasing and together with global warming from greenhouse gas emission, create the need for more environmental friendly energy production processes. Higher efficiency of biomass power plants can be achieved by increasing temperature and pressure in the boiler section and this would increase the generation of electricity along with the reduction in emission of greenhouse gases e.g. CO2. The power generation must also be flexible to be able to follow the demands of the energy market, this results in a need for cyclic operating conditions with alternating output and multiple start-ups and shut-downs. Because of the demands of flexibility, higher temperature and higher pressure in the boiler section of future biomass power plants, the demands on improved mechanical properties of the materials of these components are also increased. Properties like creep strength, thermomechanical fatigue resistance and high temperature corrosion resistance are critical for materials used in the next generation biomass power plants. Austenitic stainless steels are known to possess such good high temperature properties and are relatively cheap compared to the nickel-base alloys, which are already operating at high temperature cyclic conditions in other applications. The behaviour of austenitic stainless steels during these widened operating conditions are not yet fully understood. The aim of this licentiate thesis is to increase the knowledge of the mechanical behaviour at high temperature cyclic conditions for austenitic stainless steels. This is done by the use of thermomechanical fatigue- and creepfatigue testing at elevated temperatures. For safety reasons, the effect of prolonged service degradation is investigated by pre-ageing before mechanical testing. Microscopy is used to investigate the microstructural development and resulting damage behaviour of the austenitic stainless steels after testing. The results show that creep-fatigue interaction damage, creep damage and oxidation assisted cracking are present at high temperature cyclic conditions. In addition, simulated service degradation resulted in a detrimental embrittling effect due to the deterioration by the microstructural evolution.

Book excerpt: A synergistic interaction between creep and fatigue in structural materials at high temperature has previously been shown to exist. More recently, the importance of environmental effects on fatigue has been shown to frequently over-shadow the creep-fatigue interaction. As both creep and environmental effects are temperature and time dependent, the role of each is often difficult to separate. The topic of this thesis is the design and validation of an apparatus to study the interactions of environment and creep with fatigue damage at high temperature. The alloy (2 + 1/4) Cr - 1 Mo steel was selected for testing to validate the system as considerable creep-fatigue data exist on this alloy. Strain controlled fully reversed testing was conducted at temperatures of 482 C (900 F) and 538 C (1000 F). The results of the testing at 1% total strain range agreed with published data from the same heat of material. Differences in results at 0.5% total strain range were, however, found to exist. The differences are believed to be due to different specimen geometries used by other studies. This research used uniform gage length instead of the standard hourglass specimens used by others. The uniform gage length samples have a lower fatigue life at the lower strain range than published data. The results from uniform gage length samples are believed to be a better representation of a materials bulk fatigue behavior. (Author).

Book excerpt: A collaborative study supported by the European Community COST 50 program has been conducted on life prediction methods under high-temperature low-cycle fatigue and thermal fatigue cycling in the case of MAR-M509, a cast cobalt-base superalloy. Low-cycle fatigue tests were carried out by the Ecole des Mines de Paris at 900°C in air under longitudinal strain control and included sawtooth triangular shape cycles at three strain rates (frequency range 10-3 to 20 Hz), tensile strain hold cycles, and compressive strain hold cycles. Life to initiation data deduced from a-c potential drop measurements were used to evaluate three types of predictive models: strainrange partitioning, studied by BBC-Baden; creep damage models, studied by the University of Leoben; and an oxidation-fatigue interaction model, studied by the Ecole des Mines de Paris. All the methods have been found to correlate experimental data within a factor of three. However, they range from simple correlating methods with adjustable parameters to be fitted to fully predictive methods with no fitting parameter. Thermal fatigue data on wedge-type specimens (i.e., components instead of laboratory specimens) have been used to check the prediction capability of the various methods and have shown the superiority of oxidation-fatigue interaction models for this material.

Book excerpt: Written by a leading researcher in the field, this revised and updated second edition of a highly successful book provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, non-metals and composites. The author discusses the principles of cyclic deformation, crack initiation and crack growth by fatigue, covering both microscopic and continuum aspects. The book begins with discussions of cyclic deformation and fatigue crack initiation in monocrystalline and polycrystalline ductile alloys as well as in brittle and semi-/non-crystalline solids. Total life and damage-tolerant approaches are then introduced in metals, non-metals and composites followed by more advanced topics. The book includes an extensive bibliography and a problem set for each chapter, together with worked-out example problems and case studies. This will be an important reference for anyone studying fracture and fatigue in materials science and engineering, mechanical, civil, nuclear and aerospace engineering, and biomechanics.
