Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is to date the first monograph-length study of the popular American political TV series House of Cards. It proposes an encompassing analysis of the first three seasons from the unusual angles of discourse and dialogue. The study of the stylistic idiosyncrasies of the ruthless main protagonist, Frank Underwood, is completed by a pragmatic and cognitive approach exposing the main characters’ manipulative strategies to win over the other. Taking into account the socio-cultural context and the specificities of the TV medium, the volume focuses on the workings of interaction as well as the impact of the direct address to the viewer. The book critically uses the latest theories in pragmatics and stylistics in its attempt at providing a pragma-rhetorical theory of manipulation.

Book excerpt: This profusely illustrated book demonstrates step by step the astonishing card magic cultivated by one of the premier sleight-of-hand artists of the 20th century. It presents maneuvers that have left theater audiences amazed and that card-playing professionals have used to great advantage. It is not a book for beginners, but will help those with basic card expertise reach new levels of performance in their art. Among the moves are shifts, palms, glides, false shuffles, cuts, fans, and steals. You'll learn how to do the false table riffle shuffle, how to deal from the bottom, how to know an opponent's hole card, how to "warm up a cold deck," and much more. In addition, the author presents forty dazzling deceptions guaranteed to amaze your audience: Confusion, Birds of a Feather, The Ambitious Card, A Brilliant Climax, Your Favorite Ace, A Quickie, The Obtrusive Queens, and many more. Over 300 photographs show the practitioner's exact hand positions during each critical move. Australian-born Arthur H. Buckley became well known in America for the magic he worked with cards on the major vaudeville circuits of the 1920s. Schooled by the great sleight-of-hand artists he met in the entertainment business and by professional gamblers he met in his early years touring Australia, his absolute mastery of the most artful and demanding card-handling routines was legendary. In 1946, he wrote this practical guide revealing in detail the secrets of his art. Any magician or card conjurer who aspires to the utmost proficiency in card manipulation will want to have this indispensable reference in his or her library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by television trainers who run their own courses on Multiskilling, this book offers a comprehensive introduction to the broad range of skills and technical knowledge required in this industry. It details all the essential information you need to know, acting as an on-the-job reference source for everyday use. For many broadcasting technicians, one of the biggest challenges in recent years has been the transition from a career working in a solo core skill such as camerawork or audio, to acquiring the experience and expertise of a range of production jobs. Many people are expected to work in a number of crafts and to equip themselves with a much wider range of television techniques than had been customary in the past. Multiskilling has become an integral part of television culture, requiring that new entrants are competent in several specialist production skills. Multiskilling for Television Production concentrates on the techniques associated with news and magazine programme production, where most tecnhical operators are usually employed, but most techniques are shared across the whole spectrum of television and film making. Anyone baffled by the range and scope of skills to be mastered will find this book invaluable.

Book Synopsis The End of Television? by : Elihu Katz
Download or read book The End of Television? written by Elihu Katz and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2009-09-17 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is television dead? The classic television era of the 1950s and 1960s, characterized by limited choices of programs broadcast on over the air channels to families as if they were seated around a hearth – and to a nation as if gathered around a campfire – has indeed ended. Throughout the drastic evolution of this media, thousands of studies have examined the short-term effects of television, such as the evaluation of persuasion campaigns. Yet there is scant research on the overreaching sociological impacts of television and its centrality to Western culture over the past 60 years. This compelling volume of The ANNALS is the first collection of rigorous articles devoted to studying ways in which television has impacted our values, ideologies, institutions, social structure, and culture.
Book Synopsis Unfolding the Cards by : Ian Damerell
Download or read book Unfolding the Cards written by Ian Damerell and published by VDA leidykla. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays attempt to confront the effect of years of postmodernity and its promotion of individuality at the cost of solidarity and communal spirit. In the wake of this it suggests possible frameworks for an art study that restores a certain focus on communal spirit. It proposes, too, that art study’s fragile position in contemporary society is a consequence of over-commercialisation and its resultant surface values. Consumerist and corporate ideology encourage the consumer/individual’s self-realisation, seemingly divorced from communal interests. Within this isolation lies the potential breakdown of ethics. Therefore, I dream of a kinder society, i.e. one where we are engaged in realising the community, as its citizens. This is not blind obedience, but in a spirit of contributing to a whole (society). More specifically, it means allowing and, to a degree, maintaining art study, as a sphere of possibilities for budding citizen artists. It is envisaging art study as a discursive arena, and creating an academic space that allows for art’s main contribution - the dislodging of the so-called proper – i.e. entrenched doctrine. I believe that art study can contribute to the improving of society, in the main, because art enacts a different sharing of the sensible.
