Book excerpt: This books systematically assesses the role of government in the computerization of U.S. and world society. Part One traces the evolution of postwar policy for domestic telematics--in parallel with growing corporate demand for merged computer-communication services under private mastery. Part Two extends the arguments to the international sphere, as the structure of corporate enterprise is now essentially transnational. Part Three returns to Government's other critical role in the computerization process, as a market for advanced telematics equipment and services.

Book excerpt: Electronic communications are already revolutionizing the delivery of health care in homes and communities. The medium will have increasing impact on the delivery of health care in response to the pressure to use limited resources cost-effectively. To date much of telematics in health care has focused on hospital-based bio-medicine. In this book a case is made for reorientation of telematic activity towards the use of "low tech" (social) technologies supported by "Health for All" philosophies. This book uses several case studies of pilot schemes to illustrate how the models can be applied in a variety of settings. Experience of telematics in America, Canada, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal and Wales is shared for an international readership of innovators in health care management.

Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the activities on Health Telematics Education. In Europe, coordinated activities in healthcare informatics education started in the late 1980's with the establishment of European Courses in Health Teematics. At the same time the European Commission foresaw the need for spreading the knowledge of IT in the Healthcare Sector. Therefore the EC, since then, have supported the initiatives that aim to create awareness, stimulate diffusion, educate and train the users (healthcare professionals) in the application of Information Technology to the Healthcare Sector. Such an initiative is the NIGHTENGALE project which is an essential project in the planning and implementation of strategy timing the Nursing profession in using and applying healthcare information systems, as well as, the IT EDUCTRA project which covers a more wide spectrum of the Health Telematics Education. The objective of this book is to promote the appropriate use of the developed Telematics infrastructure across Europe by educating and training healthcare professionals in a harmonising way across Europe in the upcoming field of Health and Nursing Informatics. For achieving this objective the European Commission established a series of European Conferences on Health Telematics Education, and Workshops by experts (users, developers and policymakers). In this book the Proceedings of the first European Conference in 'Health Telematics Education' (HTE'96), organised by the NIGHTINGALE project and supported by the IT EDUCTRA project, are included as well as the minutes and the presentations of the NIGHTINGALE Workshops.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of a publication series emerging from an international interdisciplinary study group on "New Technologies and Work (NeTWork)". NeTWork is sponsored by the Werner-Reimers Foundation (Bad Homburg, Germany) and the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (Paris). The NeTWork study group has set itself the task of intellectually penetrating various problem domains posed by the introduction and spread of new technologies in work settings. This problem focus requires interdisciplinary co-operation. The usual mode of operating is to identify an important problem within the NeTWork scope, to attempt to prestructure it and then to invite original contributions from European researchers or research teams actively involved in relevant analytic or developmental work. A specific workshop serves to cross-fertilize the different approaches and to help to integrate more fully the individual contributions. The concept of telematics refers to the integration of computer, telecommunication and information technologies. It alludes to the opportunities presented by the technical means to communicate and transfer data over large distances by "intelligent equipment". Teleshopping, teleconferencing, teleworking and telebanking are but a few examples of a development which influences both public and private environments. Both households and workplaces are likely to be thoroughly changed by telematics. This publication emphasises the application of telematics in working environments. The central questions of the book are: How will the present and future development of telematics effect the nature and organization of work, and under which conditions will this development be optimal? From the various contributions it is clear that telematics is not a single direct cause or determinant of particular changes in work and organization. The development and application of telematics depend on decision making of actors at a political scene both outside and inside the work organizations. The effects of the use of these applications appear to be co-determined by many other factors. In fact, the technology interacts with political, economic, and social factors in a complex process that shapes new organizational forms and work relationships.echnologies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of telematics --- an integration of telecommunications and informatics --- is one of the new electronic technologies which merges communication and information processes by using computer networks, and is expanding rapidly. It is expected that developments in this field will have a strong impact on future transportation and locational decisions as well as on the behaviour of companies and individuals. This Proceedings volume contains the papers that were held during the First International Symposium ''Telematics --- Transportation and Spatial Development'', The Hague, 14--15 April 1988. The lectures held covered current and expected developments in telematics and the effects of applications of telematics on the economy, transportation and spatial planning. The main topics discussed were: -- Telematics as a new technology -- Telematics as substitute for physical transport -- Telematics as an optimization of existing transportation techniques and processes -- Telematics as a factor in spatial reorganization
