As with other ICT events in the past, this professional meeting continues to be highly competitive and very well perceived by the international networking community, - tracting excellent contributions and active participation. This year, a total of 430 papers from 36 countries were submitted, from which 188 were accepted. Each paper was - viewed by several members of the ICT2004 Technical Program Committee. We were very pleased to receive a large percentage of top-quality contributions. Thetopicsofsubmittedpaperscoveredawidespectrumfromphotonictechniques, signal processing, cellularnetworks, andwirelessnetworks, toadhocnetworks.Webelievethe ICT2004papersofferawiderangeofsolutionstokeyproblemsintelecommunications, and describe challenging avenues for industrial research and development. In addition to the conference regular sessions, seven tutorials and a workshop were organized.Thetutorialsfocusedonspecialtopicsdealingwithnext-generationnetworks. The workshop focused on particular problems and solutions in heavily distributed and shareable environments. We would like to thank the ICT 2004 Technical Program Committee members and referees. Without their support, the creation of such a broad conference program would not be possible. We also thank all the authors who made a particular effort to contribute to ICT2004. We truly believe that due to all these efforts the ?nal conference program consisted of top-quality contributions. We are also indebted to many individuals and organizations that made this conference possible. In particular, we would like to thank the members of the ICT2004 Organizing Committee for their help in all aspects of the organization of this professional meeting.

This book was released on 2004-04-08 with total page 1553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the refereed proceedings of the 3rd International IFIP-TC6 Networking Conference, Networking 2004. Conferences in the Networking series span the interests of several distinct, but related, TC6 working groups, including Working Groups 6.2, 6.3, and 6.8. Re?ecting this, the conference was structured with three Special Tracks: (i) Networking Technologies, Services, and Protocols; (ii) Performance of Computer and Communication Networks; and (iii) Mobile and Wireless Communications. However, beyond providing a forum for the presentation of high-quality - search in various complementary aspects of networking, the conference was also targetedtocontributingtoauni?edviewofthe?eldandtofosteringtheinter- tion and exchange of fruitful ideas between the various related (and overlapping) specialized subcommunities therein. Towards this second objective, more than a few conference sessions (and thematic sections in this book) ‘cut across’ the Special Tracks, along more generic or fundamental concepts. Networking 2004 was fortunate to attract very high interest among the c- munity, and the conference received 539 submissions from 44 countries in all ?ve continents. These ?gures correspond to a remarkable increase in subm- sions from the previous very successful events (roughly, a 156% increase over Networking 2000 and 71% over Networking 2002), and indicate that Netw- king conferences are progressively becoming established as worldwide reference events in the ?eld.

Book excerpt: In international comparisons the Nordic countries tend to stand out as major producers and users of information and communication technology (ICT), especially in the field of mobile telecommunications. There is a common understanding the Nordic countries were particularly well-placed to enter the booming telecommunications industry of the 1980s due to a combination of advanced demand, institutional and societal set-ups that characterize these countries. But this e-book suggests that the technological and business setting of the Nordic mobile communications is undergoing fundamental changes wit.

Book excerpt: This volume is part of the two-volume proceedings of the 19th International Conf- ence on Artificial Neural Networks (ICANN 2009), which was held in Cyprus during September 14–17, 2009. The ICANN conference is an annual meeting sp- sored by the European Neural Network Society (ENNS), in cooperation with the - ternational Neural Network Society (INNS) and the Japanese Neural Network Society (JNNS). ICANN 2009 was technically sponsored by the IEEE Computational Intel- gence Society. This series of conferences has been held annually since 1991 in various European countries and covers the field of neurocomputing, learning systems and related areas. Artificial neural networks provide an information-processing structure inspired by biological nervous systems. They consist of a large number of highly interconnected processing elements, with the capability of learning by example. The field of artificial neural networks has evolved significantly in the last two decades, with active partici- tion from diverse fields, such as engineering, computer science, mathematics, artificial intelligence, system theory, biology, operations research, and neuroscience. Artificial neural networks have been widely applied for pattern recognition, control, optimization, image processing, classification, signal processing, etc.

Book excerpt: The network management community has been pushed towards the design of alternative management approaches able to support heterogeneity, scalability, reliability, and minor human intervention. The employment of self-* properties and Peer-To-Peer (P2P) are seen as promising alternatives, able to provide the sophisticated solutions required. Despite being developed in parallel, and with minor direct connections perceived between them, self-* properties and P2P can be used concurrently. In Self-* and P2P for Network Management: Design Principles and Case Studies, the authors explore the issues behind the joint use of self-* properties and P2P, and present: a survey relating autonomic computing and self-* properties, P2P, and network and service management; the design of solutions that explore parallel and cooperative behavior of management peers; the change in angle of network management solution development from APIs, protocols, architectures, and frameworks to the design of management algorithms.

Book excerpt: At its core, information security deals with the secure and accurate transfer of information. While information security has long been important, it was, perhaps, brought more clearly into mainstream focus with the so-called “Y2K” issue. Te Y2K scare was the fear that c- puter networks and the systems that are controlled or operated by sofware would fail with the turn of the millennium, since their clocks could lose synchronization by not recognizing a number (instruction) with three zeros. A positive outcome of this scare was the creation of several Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) around the world that now work - operatively to exchange expertise and information, and to coordinate in case major problems should arise in the modern IT environment. Te terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 raised security concerns to a new level. Te - ternational community responded on at least two fronts; one front being the transfer of reliable information via secure networks and the other being the collection of information about - tential terrorists. As a sign of this new emphasis on security, since 2001, all major academic publishers have started technical journals focused on security, and every major communi- tions conference (for example, Globecom and ICC) has organized workshops and sessions on security issues. In addition, the IEEE has created a technical committee on Communication and Information Security. Te ?rst editor was intimately involved with security for the Athens Olympic Games of 2004.
