Book Synopsis The Object of the Atlantic by : Rachel Price
Download or read book The Object of the Atlantic written by Rachel Price and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-30 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Object of the Atlantic is a wide-ranging study of the transition from a concern with sovereignty to a concern with things in Iberian Atlantic literature and art produced between 1868 and 1968. Rachel Price uncovers the surprising ways that concrete aesthetics from Cuba, Brazil, and Spain drew not only on global forms of constructivism but also on a history of empire, slavery, and media technologies from the Atlantic world. Analyzing Jose Marti’s notebooks, Joaquim de Sousandrade’s poetry, Ramiro de Maeztu’s essays on things and on slavery, 1920s Cuban literature on economic restructuring, Ferreira Gullar’s theory of the “non-object,” and neoconcrete art, Price shows that the turn to objects—and from these to new media networks—was rooted in the very philosophies of history that helped form the Atlantic world itself.

Book Synopsis Prophecy and Eschatology in the Transatlantic World, 1550−1800 by : Andrew Crome
Download or read book Prophecy and Eschatology in the Transatlantic World, 1550−1800 written by Andrew Crome and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophecy and millennial speculation are often seen as having played a key role in early European engagements with the new world, from Columbus’s use of the predictions of Joachim of Fiore, to the puritan ‘Errand into the Wilderness’. Yet examinations of such ideas have sometimes presumed an overly simplistic application of these beliefs in the lives of those who held to them. This book explores the way in which prophecy and eschatological ideas influenced poets, politicians, theologians, and ordinary people in the Atlantic world from the sixteenth to the late eighteenth century. Chapters cover topics ranging from messianic claimants to the Portuguese crown to popular prophetic almanacs in eighteenth-century New England; from eschatological ideas in the poetry of George Herbert and Anne Bradstreet, to the prophetic speculation surrounding the Evangelical revivals. It highlights the ways in which prophecy and eschatology played a key role in the early modern Atlantic world.
Book Synopsis Islam in Process by : Johann P. Arnason
Download or read book Islam in Process written by Johann P. Arnason and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles included in this Yearbook of the Sociology of Islam are focused on two perspectives: Some link the comparative analysis of Islam to ongoing debates on the Axial Age and its role in the formation of major civilizational complexes, while others are more concerned with the historical constellations and sources involved in the formation of Islam as a religion and a civilization. More than any other particular line of inquiry, new historical and sociological approaches to the Axial Age revived the idea of comparative civilizational analysis and channeled it into more specific projects. A closer look at the very problematic place of Islam in this context will help to clarify questions about the Axial version of civilizational theory as well as issues in Islamic studies and sociological approaches to modern Islam. Contributors among others: Said Arjomand, Shmuel N. Eisenstadt, Josef van Ess and Raif G. Khoury.
Book Synopsis The Great Infidels by : Robert Green Ingersoll
Download or read book The Great Infidels written by Robert Green Ingersoll and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Infidels (A Lecture) was written by American writer, orator, and proponent of Freethought and agnosticism, Robert Green Ingersoll, and originally published in 1881. The work is a lecture composed from his notes posthumously, on the topic of the 'infidel' or 'iconoclast' versus the church. Those he considers infidels are the Roman emperor Julian, Giordano Bruno, Voltaire, Denis Diderot, Thomas Paine, David Hume and Baruch Spinoza. Ingersoll argues that the infidels provide far more to the benefit of humanity than any church or priest. Secondly, Ingersoll argues that the priests are so desperate to cover over the faults of their creeds that they lie about the deaths of their most effective critics, fabricating deathbed horror scenes and repentances that never happened. Ingersoll argues that religion, particularly the christian religion, is based upon fear and propagates by spreading fear. He also argues that priests are really mostly after getting and retaining power, using the lowest means to do so.
