Book excerpt: This research-oriented book presents up-to-date experimental methods currently used in research for many branches of chemical and biological engineering. The book surveys essential ideas and research methodologies, concentrating on experiments used in applications rather than on the fine points of rigorous mathematics. Examples of important applications are reviewed in sufficient detail to provide the reader with a critical understanding of context and research methodology. The volume presents a broad spectrum of chapters in the various branches of chemical and biological engineering that demonstrate key developments in these rapidly changing fields. Chapters explore the design, development, operation, monitoring, control, and optimization of chemical, physical and biological processes. Case studies are included in some chapters, building a real-world connection.

Book excerpt: Written in a manner suitable for a popular audience and including color photographs and recipes for some common uses of the nut, Pecan: America’s Native Nut Tree gathers scientific, historical, and anecdotal information to present a comprehensive view of the largely unknown story of the pecan. From the first written record of it made by the Spaniard Cabeza de Vaca in 1528 to its nineteenth-century domestication and its current development into a multimillion dollar crop, the pecan tree has been broadly appreciated for its nutritious nuts and its beautiful wood. In Pecan: America’s Native Nut Tree, Lenny Wells explores the rich and fascinating story of one of North America’s few native crops, long an iconic staple of southern foods and landscapes. Fueled largely by a booming international interest in the pecan, new discoveries about the remarkable health benefits of the nut, and a renewed enthusiasm for the crop in the United States, the pecan is currently experiencing a renaissance with the revitalization of America’s pecan industry. The crop’s transformation into a vital component of the US agricultural economy has taken many surprising and serendipitous twists along the way. Following the ravages of cotton farming, the pecan tree and its orchard ecosystem helped to heal the rural southern landscape. Today, pecan production offers a unique form of agriculture that can enhance biodiversity and protect the soil in a sustainable and productive manner. Among the many colorful anecdotes that make the book fascinating reading are the story of André Pénicaut’s introduction of the pecan to Europe, the development of a Latin name based on historical descriptions of the same plant over time, the use of explosives in planting orchard trees, the accidental discovery of zinc as an important micronutrient, and the birth of “kudzu clubs” in the 1940s promoting the weed as a cover crop in pecan orchards. **Published in cooperation with the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Ellis Brothers Pecan, Inc., and The Mason Pecans Group**

Book excerpt: "The most thorough reference on pecan cultivars is now in print."--Dr. W.D. Goff, PECAN SOUTH, 1993. "The book is an encyclopedic volume fusing material from the literature & the author's personal observations on seventy different cultivars. No single cultivar, much less seventy cultivars, has ever been dealt with from such an array of growth & cultivar characteristics."--Dr. I.E. Yates, THE PECAN GROWER, 1993. "It is not only an exceptionally attractive & well-written book, but I am sure it will be a standard reference among the best cultivar editions in all of Horticulture."--Dr. Paul Larsen, Horticulturalist. "PECAN CULTIVARS: THE ORCHARD'S FOUNDATION is truly an outstanding contribution to the pecan industry...a book that will become a standard for the industry..."--Joe Urban, Grower, Crystal City, TX. The book begins with the history of cultivar development. Next, tree & fruit characteristics essential to cultivar success are identified & described. Common cultivars are then discussed individually with reference to these characteristics. The fourth section proposes standards for judging new selections & submits breeding strategies for developing successful cultivars. In the last section, distinguishing nut charcteristics are delineated & used to develop a nut identification key. Orders: Pecan Production Innovations, P.O. This book was released on 2005 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Task Committee report provides standardized equations for calculating reference evapotranspiration (ET) from weather data and procedures for quality assessment and control of weather data. The purpose of the standardized reference ET equation and calculation procedures is to bring commonality to the calculation of reference ET and to provide a standardized basis for determining or transferring crop coefficients for agriculture and landscape use. The basis of the standardized reference ET equation is the ASCE Penman-Monteith (ASCE-PM) method Manual 70. Along with applications for the ASCE-PM method, this report includes recommended calculations for vapor pressure, net radiation and wind speed adjustment, and guidelines on assessing weather data integrity and estimating values for missing data. The development of this standardized report by the Environmental and Water Resources Committee (EWRI) of ASCE, was made at the request of, and has been endorsed by, the Irrigation Association.
