Book excerpt: The history of technology-mediated ministry can be traced to the beginning of the written word. For millennia, mankind has used some form of technology to communicate with others. From parchment and ink to the Roman roads upon which the letters of the Apostles were carried, from Gutenberg’s printing press to the broadcast ministries of faithful ministers like the Rev. Billy Graham, technology has been a tool for the church to advance the call of God to reach the world with the life-saving gospel of Jesus Christ. As churches navigate the twenty-first century, a new period of technology-mediated ministry has risen to prominence -- the digital era. With an aim to present common practices among the fastest-growing churches in America, this research observed churches who are successfully using technology in the digital age. This study identifies the implications for local church assimilation and reveals both the value and challenges of using technology-mediated ministry for church membership growth. This study reveals how technology-mediated church member assimilation is indicative of low church accountability and at the same time presents the church with an effective mechanism for gospel evangelism and engagement with those hindered by life and location.

Book excerpt: While most Christians are content with a superficial and pragmatic assessment of the new information technologies, Douglas Groothuis probes more deeply. He wisely recognizes the symbolic power of technology: machines don't just do things, they shape us by equipping our imaginations and language with powerful new images, metaphors, and assumptions. Groothuis has done a great service in alerting us to the temptations that will challenge the twenty-first century church, and in providing the tools to discern what is real, what is true, and what is to be treasured." --Ken Myers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary volume brings together leading writers and thinkers to provide a critique of a broad range of topics related to Hillsong Church. Hillsong is one of the most influential, visible, and (in some circles) controversial religious organizations/movements of the past thirty years. Although it has received significant attention from both the academy and the popular press, the vast majority of the scholarship lacks the scope and nuance necessary to understand the complexity of the movement, or its implications for the social, cultural, political, spiritual, and religious milieus it inhabits. This volume begins to redress this by filling important gaps in knowledge as well as introducing different audiences to new perspectives. In doing so, it enriches our understanding of one of the most influential Christian organizations of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Book excerpt: In Narratives and Numbers: Empirical Studies of Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity Mark J. Cartledge provides a rich set of essays on key themes in Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity. Using empirical research methods drawn from the social sciences he interrogates his originally gathered data by means of theology and sociology. These studies address such issues as glossolalia, prophecy, spirituality, gender and the family, the doctrine of the Trinity, socialization, altruism and the practice of healing. Collectively they provide original insight into one of the most vibrant forms of Christianity today. Additionally, these studies model how empirical research in religion can be bought into conversation with theological discourse. The findings of this research can be used by scholars and students from different perspectives and disciplinary contexts.
