Book excerpt: For centuries, various new media technologies have provided individuals with a set of powerful tools to affect their audiences. Among these the magic lantern show was perhaps the most pervasive, and persuasive. Around the world audiences gathered together in darkened rooms to see a sequence of projected images transition one into another as they listened to personal stories or scripted narrations. Through the power of the magic lantern audiences, for the first time, became the direct witnesses to distant, often traumatic, political events; they visually learned new scientific and medical knowledge, virtually experienced distant places, and collectively experienced strange, often uncanny, phenomena. Although relatively neglected until recently, the apparatus of the magic lantern is now receiving the attention it deserves from historians, curators and artists. Through a set of case studies focusing on the use of the magic lantern by very different, but equally fascinating individuals, a team of international scholars analyses the emerging power of the lantern show in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries within politics, religion, travel, science, health, marketing and entertainment. The magic lantern’s connections to today’s multimedia environments are explored through the intertwined themes of connecting, experiencing, witnessing and persuading.

Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the current and emerging industrial applications of ionic liquids, covering the core processes, the practical implementation and technical challenges involved, and exploring potential future directions for research and development. The introductory chapter describes the unique physical and chemical properties of ionic liquids, and illustrates the vast potential for application of these materials across the industrial landscape. Following this, individual chapters written by leading figures from industry and academia address specific processes and products, such as the development of a new chloroaluminate ionic liquid as an alkylation catalyst and a new class of capillary gas chromatography (GC) columns with stationary phases based on ionic liquids. Over the past twenty years, ionic liquids have moved from being considered as mere academic curiosities to having genuine applications in fields as wide-ranging as biotechnology, biorefineries, catalysis, pharmaceuticals, renewable fuels, and sustainable energy. This book highlights several commercial products and processes that use or will soon be using ionic liquids.

The papers here highlight the importance of studying entrepreneurship from a wide range of perspectives, including research that derives from economics, history, sociology, psychology and from different business disciplinary bases such as marketing, finance and strategy. The overall focus in this set is on "entrepreneurial" activity, rather than specifically small or family-owned business and favours research articles over those that deal purely with practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-tech businesses form a crucial part of entrepreneurial activity – in some ways presenting very typical examples of entrepreneurship, yet in some ways representing quite different challenges. The uncertainty in innovation and advanced technology makes it difficult to use conventional economic planning models, and also means that the management skills used in this area must be more responsive to issues of risk, uncertainty and evaluation than in conventional business opportunities. Specifically focusing on the mix of theory and practice needed to accurately inform students, the key topics covered include: uncertainty and innovation entrepreneurial finance marketing technological innovations high-tech incubation management. Including case studies to give practical insights into genuine business examples, this comprehensive book has a distinctly ‘real-world’ focus throughout. Edited by a multi-national team, it draws together leading writers and researchers from across Europe, making it a must-read for all those involved in advanced entrepreneurship with specific interests in high-tech start-ups.

The authors examine the extent to which business incubators are influential in situations such as nurturing young technology firms, increasing success of new firms, and in developing an ecosystem around these successes. Also examined is the relationship between business incubators and their resource providers, including venture capitalist firms and government agencies. Edited by Phillip Phan (Johns Hopkins Carey Business School), Sarfraz Mian (State University of New York at Oswego), and Wadid Lamine (Toulouse Business School), all leading figures in the field, this book provides both a theoretical framework to conceptualise ideas and a practical guide to influence best practices and innovation in business incubators.

This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2000, the leaders of member states of the United Nations adopted the Millennium Declaration, which set out a series of clear commitments, goals and targets to achieve Human Development. These ambitious goals were subsequently refined into eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), designed to provide a framework for accountability, donor coordination and resource mobilization. The MDGs are: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; promote gender equality and empower women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; ensure environmental sustainability; and develop a global partnership for development. The first seven of these Goals are concerned with outcomes, identifying the progress towards certain standards of human well-being and decent living which should be achieved globally and nationally by 2015. The eighth Goal is concerned with relationships, identifying various aspects of a “global partnership for development” which must be forged to support the realization of these poverty reduction, human development and environmental sustainability standards. The MDGs provide opportunities to start working from real-life development problems. Addressing these problems requires multidisciplinary approaches that combine the natural sciences, the life sciences and technical approaches with social-science approaches. The challenge is to integrate social, economic, political and institutional concerns into research strategy. To be able to achieve this, there is a need to establish a linking pin between research, policy and practice in Nigeria. The aim of such a linking pin would be to synthesize research outcomes on specific MDGrelated topics and to translate these into implications for policy – and decision – making through easily accessible gathering where individual stakeholders can air their views. The articles contained in this book address research outcomes from stakeholders (Sociologists, Economists, Agronomists, Agricultural Engineers, Civil Engineers, Environmental Scientists and Engineers, Geographers, Geologists, Microbiologists, Medical Practitioners, Policy Makers, Educationists, etc.) to confirm achievement of Millennium Development Goals in Nigeria and other neighboring countries.

Book excerpt: This book proposes a comprehensive analysis of the existing schools of thought on technology-driven entrepreneurship to point out the process-based nature of this phenomenon. It explores whether entrepreneurship can be learned and examines the main processes that help influence entrepreneurial mind-sets. In the current economic landscape, technology-driven entrepreneurship is the driving force behind national economies and entrepreneurial societies. It is the engine of innovation, job creation, productivity and economic growth, bringing benefits both at the level of the individual and of the society and promoting sustainable smart growth and development. This book provides a comprehensive view of “how” entrepreneurs and future entrepreneurs learn and develop their business ventures in a wider environment. Moreover, it discusses issues concerning setting up the suitable entrepreneurial environments, processes, values and policies to encourage and foster individual entrepreneurial aptitudes. It also explores practices for developing technology-driven entrepreneurship in a European context as well as in emerging regions.
