Book excerpt: This thesis provides an explanation of one RMA issue: the effectiveness of contemporary military technology against tough geography, based upon case studies in the Korean peninsula. The originality of the thesis is that it will provide a sound insight for potential foes' approach to the dominant US military power (superior technology and sustenance of war). The North Korean defence strategy - using their edge in geography and skill - tried to protect themselves from the dominant US power, but it may be impossible to deter or defeat them with technological superiority alone. This research also provides a valuable example, through Stephen Biddle's technology and skill theory, which claims that, in the future of war, the skills of the unit (tactical readiness) are as important as the technology involved. By examining three case studies, the thesis aims to reveal that technological superiority alone cannot guarantee military success against the foe that possesses the geographic advantage and the capability to use its benefits. The first case study of the Imjin Wars will examine the significance of geography and capability to using the geographic edge in the Korean peninsula. The second case study of the Korean War will examine how technology alone failed to overcome the skilled and geographically advantageous defenders in modern warfare. Finally, by examining possible conflict scenarios of US-ROK alliance and North Korea, this research will seek to prove that contemporary military technology alone would not guarantee military success and deterrence against North Korea, which is both geographically advantaged and highly skilled. It was certainly this, and for those who fought this is what they generally saw. Yet every foot of the struggles forward, every step of the retreats, the overwhelming victories, the withdrawals and last ditch stands had their seagoing support and overtones. The spectacular ones depended wholly on amphibious power -- the capability of the twentieth century scientific Navy to overwhelm land-bound forces at the point of contact. Yet the all pervading influence of the sea was present even when no major landing or retirement or reinforcement highlighted its effect. When navies clash in gigantic battle or hurl troops ashore under irresistible concentration of ship-borne guns and planes, nations understand that sea power is working. It is not so easy to understand that this tremendous force may effect its will silently, steadily, irresistibly even though no battles occur. No clearer example exists of this truth in wars dark record than in Korea. Communist-controlled North Korea had slight power at sea except for Soviet mines. So beyond this strong underwater phase the United States Navy and allies had little opposition on the water. It is, therefore, easy to fail to recognize the decisive role navies played in this war fought without large naval battles.

Book excerpt: 1947 is considered by most historians of the United States as the year when the Cold War began with the implementation of the "Truman Doctrine" to contain the propagation of world Communism, which give rise to the anti-communist hysteria of the following years. By June 25, 1950, some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People's Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People's Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea's behalf. Also, in those same early days of the Cold War, the skies over the continental U.S. were flush with sightings of objects that led many Americans to look to the stars for answers. However, at the same time a unexpected invaders appeared in the skies over Korea. During the 37-month conflict, dozens of men reported seeing unidentified flying objects. At first, it was theorized that these crafts might be Soviet or Chinese vessels, with technology unknown to American troops, or Soviet experiments based on German technology; or foreign research in anti-gravity powered by electromagnetic propulsion. However, as times went on, UFO sightings throughout the Korean war increased. This fact discredited the "Soviet Experiment Theory" because the Soviet Union, or even China or the US, at that time did not have the technological capabilities to develop this kind of weapon and texted it so often. Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War came to an end. After three years of a bloody and frustrating war, the United States, the People's Republic of China, North Korea, and South Korea agree to an armistice. But American GI's continued reporting seeing strange objects in the skies well into the year 1954. The following year that the Korean War ended., the United States Air Force ran Project Blue Book, aka: Project 10073. It was a systematic study into unidentified flying objects and their potential threat to national security. It was shutdown in December 1969, and the Air Force announced they had found nothing important. However, the project ended abortively, and many questions remained, like those strange objects reported during the Korean War. This book is an authentic reproduction of the original printed documents on shades of gray. IMPORTANT, despite the fact that we have attempted to accurately maintain the integrity of the original work, the present reproduction has missing and blurred pages, poor pictures and FBI censorship's pencil markings from the original scanned copy. Many of the original FBI documents and Project Blue Book pages are shadowy, and faint. ILLEGIBLE PAGES HAVE A NOTE. Book excerpt: The varied nature of military operations in a changing global environment requires U.S. Armed Forces to depend on the unique capabilities of each Military Service. The effective use of these capabilities requires that our Armed Forces operate as a fully integrated joint force. It is the responsibility of the acquisition community to ensure that our forces have the combat edge provided by technologically superior weapons. To maintain the technological superiority of today's weapons, it is essential that the Department pursues a focused, high quality, aggressive science and technology program, which is responsive to the interoperability and full spectrum dominance required by a joint force. Over the last year, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Joint Staff, Military Services, and Defense Agencies have again worked together to develop this third edition of the Joint Warfighting Science and Technology Plan. The plan serves to focus a portion of the DoD science and technology program on supporting future joint warfighting requirements and identifies ten Joint Warfighting Capability Objectives critical for maintaining a warfighting advantage. The Joint Requirements Oversight Council has validated the Joint Warfighting Capability Objectives upon which this plan is based. The plan supports achievement of the operational concepts cited in Joint Vision 2010 and addresses a variety of new threats present in the national security environment. It is also responsive to Section 270 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1997, which requires the annual submission of a plan for ensuring that the DoD science and technology program supports joint warfighting requirements.
