Book excerpt: A novel generic Technoeconomic, Environmental and Risk Analysis (TERA)computational method was developed for marine power plants that are composed ofexisting or at preliminary design stage marine gas turbines. The method is composedof several numerical models in order to realistically approach the life cycle operationof a marine gas turbine power plant-according to the operational profile of theplatform marine vessel type-coupled to an integrated full electric propulsion systemand stochastically estimate the power plant?s life cycle net present cost. Thedevelopment of the TERA method led to the creation of an integrated computationalmarine vessel operation environment which was given the name?Poseidon?. The performance and exhaust emissions (nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, carbondioxide and unburned hydrocarbon) of five 25 Megawatt marine gas turbines of thesame technology level and design-point overhaul interval were simulated andmodelled in?Poseidon?. The exhaust emissions of the modelled gas turbines werecalibrated for two combustor technologies: conventional and dry-low emissions forboth distillate fuel and natural gas used as fuel. The marine gas turbines are: existingsimple cycle, novel twin-mode intercooled cycle, fictional intercooled cycle, fictionalrecuperated cycle and partly based on an existing design, intercooled/recuperatedcycle. Three marine vessel types that require the same power plant output power andconfiguration but they utilise different operational profiles were also realisticallymodelled. The marine vessels are: Destroyer, RoPax fast ferry and LNG carrier. Itwas assumed that the Destroyer?s and RoPax fast ferry?s power plants use distillatesfuel and the LNG carrier?s power plant uses compressed natural gas as fuel. Three case studies defined by each of the marine vessels were performed in order toinvestigate the economic feasibility of the advanced cycle gas turbine power plants incomparison with the power plant composed by existing gas turbines, in a possiblefuture scenario were all four modelled exhaust emission quantities are accuratelymeasured and taxed. The investment on dry-low emissions combustor technology wasalso investigated as part of each case study. Both technical and economic inputdatasets are realistic. Due to time restrains the LNG carrier case study features onlythe intercooled/recuperated gas turbine power plant. Obtained results are presentedand discussed separately for each case study.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased availability of natural gas has boosted research and development efforts to further increase gas turbine performance. Performance has been increased remarkably and unit cost reduced due to achievements gained in improving thermodynamic cycles and cooling technologies. However, increased complexity in power industry regulations and fluctuations in fuel price have indicated that all the aforementioned improvements in gas turbine performance could not cope with the increased competition in the gas turbine industrial market. Innovation within the aero-derivative concept has enabled further significant improvement in the performance of industrial gas turbines. It allows a more beneficial approach than developing new designs of industrial gas turbines owing to reduced designing time and cost. Objectives in this project focus on developing a methodology of design and assessing aeroderivative gas turbine engines derived from a 130-seat aircraft engine. Developed methodology includes techno-economic and environmental assessment, conducted through further developments of models based on Techno-economic and Environmental Risk Assessment (TERA) philosophy, to be applied in further industrial applications. Tools used in this investigation include a significant literature research on the development of aero-derivative gas turbine technologies, including thermodynamic cycles and its land-based applications. Turbomatch is a homebased code developed in Cranfield University, used in calculating design point and predicting off-design performance of parent aero-engine and the aeroderivative engines developed. Excel and FORTRAN code are also used in calculating engine's design parameters, and creating a model of life estimation Creep. Moreover, FORTRAN code is used for building emission and economic models for power generation and combined heat and power applications. Finally, MATLAP code is used in creating a small model for generating performance TXT files, and running marine integrated models platform. All models needed to develop the methodology have been created, and calculations of an engine's performance and assessment were conducted based on this developed methodology. Sensible results are generated from the investigated methodology and they show acceptable designs of aero-derivative engines on different thermodynamic cycles. Based on the acceptable level of technology and material thermal barriers, all design and off-design performance limitations of new developed aero-derivative engines have been determined for a wide range of ambient conditions. Techno-economic and environmental assessment performed through implementing the developed aero-derivative engines on power generation and marine applications under different operating scenarios. Results of operating the engines on power generation and marine applications have been investigated and compared. It is observed that engines respond differently when operating under different environmental profiles, depending on the number of units engaged and their thermodynamic cycle as well as mechanical configurations. Also, the selected specific gas turbine engine can be the best economical choice for operating on determined scenario, while it cannot be when operating in different scenarios. Assessment of developed engines on the investigated application shows how the lowest specific cost (small engine size) can constitute important criteria in engine selection.

Book excerpt: This Special Issue addresses the general problem of a proper match between the demands of energy users and the units for energy conversion and storage, by means of proper design and operation of the overall energy system configuration. The focus is either on systems including single plants or groups of plants, connected or not to one or more energy distribution networks. In both cases, the optimum design and operation involve decisions about thermodynamic processes, about the type, number, design parameters of components/plants, and storage capacities, and about mutual interconnections and the interconnections with the distribution grids. The problem is absolutely general, encompassing design and operation of energy systems for single houses, groups of houses, industries, industrial districts, municipal areas, regions and countries. The presented papers show that similar approaches can be used in different applications, although a general standard has not been achieved yet.

Book excerpt: Marine power systems have been designed to be a safer alternative to stationary plants in order to adhere to the regulations of classification societies. Marine steam boilers recently achieved 10 MPa pressure, in comparison to stationary plants, where a typical boiler pressure of 17 MPa was the standard for years. The latest land-based, ultra-supercritical steam boilers reach 25 MPa pressure and 620 °C temperatures, which increases plant efficiency and reduces fuel consumption. There is little chance that such a plant concept could be applied to ships. The reliability of marine power systems has to be higher due to the lack of available spare parts and services that are available for shore power systems. Some systems are still very expensive and are not able to be widely utilized for commercial merchant fleets such as COGAS, mainly due to the high cost of gas turbines. Submarine vehicles are also part of marine power systems, which have to be reliable and accurate in their operation due to their distant control centers. Materials that are used in marine environments are prone to faster corrosive wear, so special care also should be taken in this regard. The main aim of this Special Issue is to discuss the options and possibilities of utilizing energy in a more economical way, taking into account the reliability of such a system in operation.

Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, there has been a growing concern about the social and environmental risks which have come along with the progress achieved through a variety of mutually intertwined modernization processes. In recent years these concerns are transformed into a widely-shared sense of urgency, partly due to events such as the various pandemics threatening livestock, and increasing awareness of the risks and realities of climate change, and the energy and food crises. This sense of urgency includes an awareness that our entire social system is in need of fundamental transformation. But like the earlier transition between the 1750's and 1890's from a pre-modern to a modern industrial society, this second transition is also a contested one. Sustainable development is only one of many options. This book addresses the issue on how to understand the dynamics and governance of the second transition dynamics in order to ensure sustainable development. It will be necessary reading for students and scholars with an interest in sustainable development and long-term transformative change.
