Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Biochemical Pharmacology explains the molecular aspects of drugs and the changes in bio-chemical systems. The cellular movements that result from such changes are also evaluated. Biochemical lesion is extensively defined in the book. A discussion on electromagnetic radiation is also provided. A chapter of the book is devoted to the principles of electronic and nuclear magnetic resonance. The principles and applications of mass spectrometry and combined gas chromatography are then discussed. The scientific advances made with the use of immunological methods are the focus of a section of the book. Another section provides an introduction to the kinetic properties of reactions made by enzymes. The process called homogenization is clearly explained along with a discussion on the use of electron microscopy. Autoradiography shows the distribution of compounds at the subcellular level. The theoretical background of molecular spectroscopy is presented completely. The book is intended for chemists, biochemists, physicists, micro-biologists, zoologists, and botanists .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects as a group occupy a middle ground in the biosphere between bac teria and viruses at one extreme, amphibians and mammals at the other. The size and general nature of insects present special problems to the student of entomology. For example, many commercially available in struments are geared to measure in grams, while the forces commonly en countered in studying insects are in the milligram range. Therefore, tech niques developed in the study of insects or in those fields concerned with the control of insect pests are often unique. Methods for measuring things are common to all sciences. Advances sometimes depend more on how something was done than on what was measured; indeed a given field often progresses from one technique to another as new methods are discovered, developed, and modified. Just as often, some of these techniques find their way into the classroom when the problems involved have been sufficiently ironed out to permit students to master the manipulations in a few laboratory periods. Many specialized techniques are confined to one specific research labo ratory. Although methods may be considered commonplace where they are used, in another context even the simplest procedures may save con siderable time. It is the purpose of this series (1) to report new develop ments in methodology, (2) to reveal sources of groups who have dealt with and solved particular entomological problems, and (3) to describe ex periments which might be applicable for use in biology laboratory courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin-layer chromatography has become so widely known in the space of a few years that it has proved necessary to gather into book form and thus make generally accessible the experimental material previously only available in isolated publications. As thin-layer chromatography can be used both for organic and inorganic matter as well as on quantities ranging from the nanogram to the microgram, it is impossible for anyone individual to possess sufficient laboratory experience or overall knowledge to produce a practical handbook that will be of real assistance to be ginner and specialist alike. For this reason, an international group was formed, who made it their task to produce the best possible treatise. In view of the present stage of development reached by thin-Iaycr chromatography, it seems specially apt that the authors should include yet unpublished work of their own. As thin-layer chromatography is used in many different fields in natural science and medicine, the kind of brief description of materials intelligible only to the expert has been avoided. The short guides to the chemical properties of the groups to be separated, their names, and relevant bibliographic details should facilitate introductory studies arid make possible a close acquaintance with the material in hand. It also seemed advisable to give brief details of the analytical classification of material, which is so often necessary. Although the classification used may appear unusual, it is in fact pre-eminently suitable to thin-layer chromatography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) is a modern, reliable tool that complements other chromatographic techniques. This book provides a practical guide to the basic principles, procedures and pitfalls on the practical application of TLC. Thin Layer Chromatography: A Modern Practical Approach offers a sequence of chapters following the steps of the technique as the chromatographer would follow them. The chapters provide a choice of sorbent best suited to the separation intended, followed by pre-treatment required for the sample, applying the sample to the sorbent layer, development procedure, visualisation and detection, and finally quantification. Imaging and hyphenation techniques are described. The reasons why recommendations are made for specific and more general methods are covered. The book also provides an overview of some recent developments in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the techniques of chromatography have progressed rapidly. However, the aims and objectives of the First Edition, as quoted below, are just as relevant today as they undoubtedly were in 1963. 'The various methods of separating mixtures which are grouped under the general name chromatography are now well known and widely used. Since the inception of chromatography as a column technique in 1903, the principal landmarks in its progress have been its virtual rediscovery in the 1930s, the invention of synthetic resins in 1935, the introduction of paper chromatography in the early 1940s and finally, the development of gas solid and gas liquid chromatography in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Subsequent expansion in the use of chromatographic methods has been rapid and continuous, with the result that in the last 15 years a substantial volume of literature on the subject has appeared, dealing not only with particular separations but also in much specific detail with improvements in technique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main subject of this book is the characterization of plastics. To a high degree the properties of these polymers depend on the distribution of the molar mass and of other structural features, and small deviations frequently have a great effect. Therefore the characterization of polymers cannot be restricted to the determination of mean values but must yield information on these distributions. Using classical methods, the analytical fractionation of polymer homologues and structurally isomeric polymers is extremely time-consuming. Therefore, efficient chromatographic techniques are being increasingly employed in modern polymer characterization. In the first place, high-performance liquid chromatography is applied, in the form of size exclusion chromatography. It is also possible, however, to use other separation modes. More space is devoted to these other possibilities in this volume than is merited by their current range of applications, as the author believes that many separation problems will be solved by separation techniques of the non-exclusion type. Nevertheless, much emphasis is placed on size exclusion chromatography. Not only because of its current wide range of applications, but also because its relative importance, as a complement to other chromatographic techniques may even increase in the forthcoming years. This book is the first to cover all phenomena related to the above considerations. Starting with an introduction to basic liquid chromatography and to polymer science, it deals with the adsorption behaviour of polymers, with gradient techniques, with the kinetic band broadening in liquid chromatography, with instrumental features and packing materials. The book consists of four balanced sections and related information from about 1800 references is compiled in the tables. Some 250 figures and 30 tables will help give the reader a clear insight of the topics discussed. The book is aimed at helping the analyst or polymer chemist who is looking for information about chromatographic methods for the characterization of polymers.
