Book Synopsis Benzoic Acid and Sodium Benzoate by : Axel Wibbertmann
Download or read book Benzoic Acid and Sodium Benzoate written by Axel Wibbertmann and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise assessment of the risks to human health and the environment posed by exposure to benzoic acid and sodium benzoate. Benzoic acid is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of several compounds, including phenol and caprolactam. The compound is increasingly used in the production of diethylene and dipropylene glycol dibenzoate plasticizers in adhesive formulations, and to improve the properties of alkyd resins for paints and coatings. Most releases of benzoic acid and sodium benzoate into the environment result from their use as preservatives in food, beverages, mouthwashes, dentifrices, and cosmetics. For sodium benzoate, the largest use is as an anticorrosive added to antifreeze coolants. Processed foodstuffs and soft drinks are considered the main sources of exposure for the general population. Concerning behavior in the environment, both compounds are readily biodegraded under aerobic conditions and are unlikely to bioaccumulate. In laboratory animals, exposure to high concentrations caused weight gain and adverse effects on the central nervous system, liver, and kidney. While data are limited, studies suggest that the compounds do not cause adverse effects on development or reproduction and are not carcinogenic. In humans, reports of adverse effects are largely confined to cases of urticaria, asthma, rhinitis, and anaphylactic shock following oral, dermal, or inhalation exposure to these compounds, including for medical purposes. No evaluation of long-term effects on health was possible in view of the limited data available

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The comprehensive reference on modern techniques and methods for monitoring and inspecting corrosion Strategic corrosion inspection and monitoring can improve asset management and life cycle assessment and optimize operational budgets. Advances in computer technologies and electronics have led to very efficient tools for monitoring and inspecting corrosion, including impedance spectroscopy, electrical field signatures, acoustic emissions, and radiographs. This up-to-date reference explains both intrusive and non-intrusive methods of measuring corrosion rates. It covers: The impact of corrosion on the economy and the safe operation of systems in diverse operational environments The various forms of corrosion, with a focus on the detectability of corrosion damage in the real world The principles of risk-based inspection and various risk assessment methodologies (HAZOP, FMECA, FTA, and ETA), with examples from industry The monitoring of microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC), cathodic protection (CP) systems, and atmospheric corrosion Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, including visual, ultrasonic, radiographic, electromagnetic, and thermographic inspection Roadmaps used by various industries and organizations for carrying out complex inspection and monitoring schedules Complete with graphics and illustrations, this is the definitive reference for professionals involved in the maintenance of industrial systems and structures, from oil exploration to chemical plants and infrastructures; consultants; property managers; and civil, materials, and construction engineers.

Book Synopsis Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods by : United Nations
Download or read book Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods written by United Nations and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Manual of Tests and Criteria contains criteria, test methods and procedures to be used for classification of dangerous goods according to the provisions of Parts 2 and 3 of the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Model Regulations, as well as of chemicals presenting physical hazards according to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). As a consequence, it supplements also national or international regulations which are derived from the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods or the GHS. At its ninth session (7 December 2018), the Committee adopted a set of amendments to the sixth revised edition of the Manual as amended by Amendment 1. This seventh revised edition takes account of these amendments. In addition, noting that the work to facilitate the use of the Manual in the context of the GHS had been completed, the Committee considered that the reference to the "Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods" in the title of the Manual was no longer appropriate, and decided that from now on, the Manual should be entitled "Manual of Tests and Criteria".
Book Synopsis Freezing Physics by : Dirk van Delft
Download or read book Freezing Physics written by Dirk van Delft and published by History of Science and Scholar. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1908, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes (1853–1926) liquefied helium for the first time, briefly rendering his Dutch laboratory "the coldest place on earth." Freezing Physics is the first book to tell the story of Leiden University’s famed cryogenics laboratory and the man behind it, whose scientific accomplishments earned him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1913.The central question in this book is how Kamerlingh Onnes was able to succeed so brilliantly in developing his cryogenics laboratory – undoubtedly an exceptional feat in terms of its scale and its almost industrial approach in the Netherlands of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. A related question is what determined his success – his abilities as a scientist, his organisational talent, or his personality? This fascinating portrayal of Kamerlingh Onnes, the man and the scientist, traces his storied career from his first experiments with helium to his later work that opened up unexplored territories of extreme cold, magnetism, and thermodynamics — and cleared the path for the eventual discovery of superconductivity in 1911. Dirk van Delft studied physics at the Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratory. He is director of Museum Boerhaave for the History of Science and Medicine in Leiden and professor in the history of science at Leiden University.

Book Synopsis Syncrometer Science Laboratory Manual by : Hulda Regehr Clark
Download or read book Syncrometer Science Laboratory Manual written by Hulda Regehr Clark and published by . This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the 3 kinds of investigations that can be made with a syncrometer. In the first kind of investigation, you can detect entities in your body, taken as a whole. For example, mercury aflatoxin, Streptococcus pneumonia, Epstein Barre virus, orthophosphotyrosine, benzene. Such a test is not as sensitive as the organ test, described next, but for this reason allows you to select those entities most abundant in the body and therefore of special significance; in the second, you can identify which organs contain a particular entity. For example, the mercury may be in the kidney, the Streptococcus in the joints, and so on. This allows you to embark on a cleanup program for your body in a focused way. The syncrometer lets you monitor your progress. And finally, you can detect entities in products. For example, lead in your household water, thulium in your reverse osmosis water, asbestos in your sugar.
