Book excerpt: A study guide for a successful airline checkride All kinds of technical questions can be asked in an airline interview, yet there is a specific approach pilot applicants should take to successfully prepare for this part of the hiring process. In this expanded fourth edition of the book, author Ron McElroy gives readers an abundance of preparatory exercises in the areas of mental math, approach plates, regulations and procedures, weather, systems and aerodynamics, and cockpit situations to analyze and resolve. You will also be acquainted with 14 CFR Part 111 Pilot Records Database so that you are aware of the information sharing that occurs between employers. Using McElroy's tips and methods, aspiring professional pilots will be prepared to display their flying skills during the simulator ride as well as their aeronautical knowledge during the face-to-face oral questioning. This study and practice will not only ensure better performance during a technical interview or test but will help pilots fly the line a little better.

It provides a clear understanding of pilot judgment emphasizing how it can be applied to improving safety in aviation. The author brings together a rich store of personal flying experiences combined with a strong base of personal academic research to support the concepts presented. The book gives not only a strong emphasis to the application of judgment to aviation but also lays particular stress on the principles needed in how to learn, teach and evaluate judgment. For pilots, the main benefits to be gained from the book will be a foundation of knowledge and teaching to enable them to make better, safer decisions. For flight instructors, it teaches how to teach and evaluate judgment in flight students. In addition to pilots and flight instructors, the readership obviously includes aviation classroom instructors, scientists doing aviation-related research and aviation safety specialists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Corsair was one of WWII¿s most superb fighters, achieving a victory ratio of nearly 11:1 in the Pacific. Had things worked out differently, its sister craft, Goodyear¿s F2G ¿Super¿ Corsair, might have eclipsed that record. Based on Goodyear¿s fixed-wing F1G design, the F2G had a bubble cockpit and was fitted with a Pratt & Whitney R-4360 engine. The twenty-eight cylinder, four row radial air-cooled monster provided nearly 50% more take-off power than the standard double Wasp. Yet by the close of WWII, only five F2G¿s had been built, and so the plane never saw combat. Originally printed by Goodyear and the U.S. Navy, this Flight Handbook taught pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit.
