Book excerpt: This is the second edition of the WHO handbook on the safe, sustainable and affordable management of health-care waste--commonly known as "the Blue Book". The original Blue Book was a comprehensive publication used widely in health-care centers and government agencies to assist in the adoption of national guidance. It also provided support to committed medical directors and managers to make improvements and presented practical information on waste-management techniques for medical staff and waste workers. It has been more than ten years since the first edition of the Blue Book. During the intervening period, the requirements on generators of health-care wastes have evolved and new methods have become available. Consequently, WHO recognized that it was an appropriate time to update the original text. The purpose of the second edition is to expand and update the practical information in the original Blue Book. The new Blue Book is designed to continue to be a source of impartial health-care information and guidance on safe waste-management practices. The editors' intention has been to keep the best of the original publication and supplement it with the latest relevant information. The audience for the Blue Book has expanded. Initially, the publication was intended for those directly involved in the creation and handling of health-care wastes: medical staff, health-care facility directors, ancillary health workers, infection-control officers and waste workers. This is no longer the situation. A wider range of people and organizations now have an active interest in the safe management of health-care wastes: regulators, policy-makers, development organizations, voluntary groups, environmental bodies, environmental health practitioners, advisers, researchers and students. They should also find the new Blue Book of benefit to their activities. Chapters 2 and 3 explain the various types of waste produced from health-care facilities, their typical characteristics and the hazards these wastes pose to patients, staff and the general environment. Chapters 4 and 5 introduce the guiding regulatory principles for developing local or national approaches to tackling health-care waste management and transposing these into practical plans for regions and individual health-care facilities. Specific methods and technologies are described for waste minimization, segregation and treatment of health-care wastes in Chapters 6, 7 and 8. These chapters introduce the basic features of each technology and the operational and environmental characteristics required to be achieved, followed by information on the potential advantages and disadvantages of each system. To reflect concerns about the difficulties of handling health-care wastewaters, Chapter 9 is an expanded chapter with new guidance on the various sources of wastewater and wastewater treatment options for places not connected to central sewerage systems. Further chapters address issues on economics (Chapter 10), occupational safety (Chapter 11), hygiene and infection control (Chapter 12), and staff training and public awareness (Chapter 13). A wider range of information has been incorporated into this edition of the Blue Book, with the addition of two new chapters on health-care waste management in emergencies (Chapter 14) and an overview of the emerging issues of pandemics, drug-resistant pathogens, climate change and technology advances in medical techniques that will have to be accommodated by health-care waste systems in the future (Chapter 15).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current global environmental crisis is primarily the result of non-standardized parameters for environmental regulation, and is impacting e.g. clean air, safe drinking water and the quality of food, particularly in developing nations. Due to their poor/lax execution of EIA protocols, newly developing countries are preferred destinations for establishing pollution-emitting industries, which results in the degradation and depletion of their natural resources. Lack of environmental policy intervention is another major incentive to base “dirty” industries in these nations. In order to ensure sustainable development, the highest-priority issues include the monitoring and eradication of environmental problems stemming from economic development; virtually every form of economic development primarily results in the loss of forests and thus biodiversity, followed by declining air quality and the contamination of natural resources. Sustainable development ensures responsible interactions with the environment, so as to minimize the depletion or degradation of natural resources and preserve environmental quality. It involves integrated approaches to understanding the importance of environmental management systems and policy measures that lead to improved environmental performance. This book addresses the environmental concerns associated with economic development, and with approaches to attaining sustainable economic development, which include monitoring the quality of water resources, soil erosion and degradation of the natural environment.

Book excerpt: A Primer on Earth Pollution: Pollution Types and Disposal, is an encyclopedia of important research articles and short essays on pollution. Chapters in the initial half provide information about a wide variety of pollutants (dyes and microplastics) and contributing factors (thermal pollution and the impact of GM plants, for instance). Each chapter explains the nature of polluting agents and presents notes and references on preventive measures. Notes on the associated clinical complications due to exposure are also proved where applicable, such as the case of MDR bacteria in marine environments. The latter chapters of the book cover the biotechnology of medical waste disposal using microbes as well as nanotechnology used for limiting the spread of COVID-19. The volume is a handy reference for students and trainees in the field of environmental science as it brings a balance of basic and applied information on the subject of pollution.

It was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, Hubei, China, and has resulted in an ongoing pandemic. As of July 2020, more than 13.8 million cases have been reported across 188 countries and territories, resulting in more than 590,000 deaths. COVID 19: Tackling Global Pandemics through Scientific and Social Tools, is an amalgamation of scientific and social perspective. The book provides a selection of handpicked themes and topics relevant to COVID 19 pandemic across various disciplines delivered by experts in the domain. The Opinion section is a unique component of this book discussing important issues concerning the COVID 19. COVID 19: Tackling Global Pandemics through Scientific and Social Tools serves as single source of information ranging from clinical research to social science and even biotechnology to engineering in a single platform. But there is scarcity of a quality document that summarizes various aspects of a single event. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to provide scientific and social information on COVID 19 to all sectors of readers i.e. from students to researchers and even policy makers Divided into 13 chapters, the book begins with an in-depth introduction to the highly infectious disease COVID19. Followed by chapters on interventions, vaccine development, prevention and control COVID 19: Tackling Global Pandemics through Scientific and Social Tools also provides insights to current global situation, mathematical models and social factors like distancing and hand-washing. The book closes with a review on the use of artificial intelligence and engineered intervention. All are presented in a practical short format, making this volume a valuable resource for very broad academic audience. Includes updates and guidelines of WHO Serves as a single platform of information and contributions on COVID-19, from the epidemiological aspects to the biotechnology Provides directions and constructive criticism in the form of opinion by experts in the field

Book excerpt: New Perspectives in Partial Least Squares and Related Methods shares original, peer-reviewed research from presentations during the 2012 partial least squares methods meeting (PLS 2012). This was the 7th meeting in the series of PLS conferences and the first to take place in the USA. PLS is an abbreviation for Partial Least Squares and is also sometimes expanded as projection to latent structures. This is an approach for modeling relations between data matrices of different types of variables measured on the same set of objects. The twenty-two papers in this volume, which include three invited contributions from our keynote speakers, provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of the most advanced research related to PLS and related methods. Prominent scientists from around the world took part in PLS 2012 and their contributions covered the multiple dimensions of the partial least squares-based methods. These exciting theoretical developments ranged from partial least squares regression and correlation, component based path modeling to regularized regression and subspace visualization. In following the tradition of the six previous PLS meetings, these contributions also included a large variety of PLS approaches such as PLS metamodels, variable selection, sparse PLS regression, distance based PLS, significance vs. reliability, and non-linear PLS. Finally, these contributions applied PLS methods to data originating from the traditional econometric/economic data to genomics data, brain images, information systems, epidemiology, and chemical spectroscopy. Such a broad and comprehensive volume will also encourage new uses of PLS models in work by researchers and students in many fields.
