Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: Rapid industrialisation and growth in population over the past two hundred years exert an increasing pressure on natural resources and the environment. Billions of tons of controlled and scheduled waste are generated every year by the industrial sector worldwide which is often either pre-treated on-site or at a licensed contractor prior to disposal in landfills. This practice if continued is leading to resource depletion and creates a potentially harmful legacy for future generations. In order to move towards a more sustainable development as outlined in the Bruntland Report, waste reduction, reuse and recycling coupled with pollution prevention measures play an important part to slow down if not reverse this practice. Heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury, lead and chromium are not degradable or renewable like biomass hence if they are to be used in future processes reuse and recycling are the only options. At present, heavy metals are used in the chemical industry sector for applications ranging from batteries to catalysts and surface coatings, and can be found at various concentrations in gaseous, liquid or solid waste. Chromium is of particular interest owing to its legislative status and unique chemistry. Chromium exists in nature primarily in one of two oxidation states. There are other chemical oxidation states of chromium, which include 0, II, IV, and V, but they are considered transitory compared to more stable Cr(III) and Cr(VI) species. Hexavalent chromium is a strong oxidizer which can react with DNA causing mutation, while the trivalent, organically complex form is a dietary supplement to help with proper glucose metabolism, weight loss and muscle tone. Unlike many other metals, Cr(VI) can combine with oxygen to form water-soluble, negatively charged anions known as yellow chromate (CrO42-) or orange dichromate (Cr2O72-), which adsorb to positively charged sites in contrast to cationic metal species. Therefore, hexavalent chromium species are not strongly bonded in many soils under alkaline to slightly acidic conditions, for example. Thus, they can be very mobile in subsurface environment while other metals precipitated out and exert toxic effects on biological systems. Various well-established methods may be used to treat industrial effluents and contaminated water such as reduction and precipitation, reverse osmosis, evaporation, ion exchange and adsorption. While these processes are able to remove [...]

The metal reservoirs in the earth have declined due to society’s needs and due to uncontrolled mining activities. Therefore, the idea to recover metals from waste streams has emerged. In this thesis, cost competitive technologies such as adsorption using agro-wastes and precipitation using an inverse fluidized bed (IFB) reactor were investigated, with special emphasis on the recovery of base metals. Groundnut shell showed good potential for metal (Cu, Pb and Zn) removal. From artificial neural network modeling, the performance of the sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) was found to be strongly pH dependent; the removal efficiency of Cu and Zn in the IFB at pH 5.0 was >97%. Electronic waste is a good candidate as secondary metal resource. The recovery of Cu from computer printed circuited boards (PCBs) using biogenic sulfide precipitation was investigated as well. Using this technology, Cu could be recovered at ~0.48 g Cu/g PCBs.

Book excerpt: As a result of their unique physical properties, biological membrane mimetics, such as liposomes, are used in a broad range of scientific and technological applications. Liposomes, Lipid Bilayers and Model Membranes: From Basic Research to Application describes state-of-the-art research and future directions in the field of membranes, which has evolved from basic studies of the physicochemical properties of amphiphiles to their application in industry and medicine. Written by leading researchers in their fields, this book describes basic and applied research, and serves as a useful reference for both the novice and the expert. Part one covers a range of basic research topics, from theory and computational simulations to some of the most up-to-date experimental research. Topics discussed include soft matter physics of membranes, nonlamellar phases, extraction of molecules by amphiphiles, lipid models for membrane rafts, membrane dynamics, nanodiscs, microemulsions, active membranes, as well as interactions of bilayers with drugs or DNA to treat disease or for gene transfer, respectively. Part two of the book focuses on technological applications of amphiphiles, such as liposome-based nanoparticles for drug delivery, formulation of liposomes for prolonged in vivo circulation and functionalization for medical purposes, novel drug delivery systems for increased drug loading, and the use of tethered membranes for bio-sensing applications. Chapters also describe the use of liposomes in textile dyeing and how lipidic nanoparticles are used by the food industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world has witnessed several revolutions since the dawn of industrial revolution some two centuries ago. During the current century itself, three revolutions in the area of communication, information processing and quality have taken place and each time the standard of living of man improved beyond predictions. But during the same period, the world population has also phenomenally increased dwarfing the gains achieved from the development. Increased level of industrial activity to meet the of humanity has caused irreversible damage to the pristine environment that the demand Earth once had. Economic disparity between the haves and havenots has widened, aggravating the situation further more. Ozone layer depletion, warming up of Earth's atmosphere and the pollution created by uncontrolled industrial activity to gain economic strength are now assuming the proportion of a catastrophe that may eventually threaten the survival of life on Earth. Developed countries blame the Third World countries for the uncontrolled emissions through burning of fossil fuels and for wasting precious resources of energy by using inefficient and uneconomical technologies, while the developed countries are equally responsible for avoidable oV,er-consumption and for the wastage of resources and energy and for not sharing the improved and efficient technologies with the developing countries. Thus the wastage by both these set of countries continues unabated. After all, resources of the world are finite and are meant to be shared by all its inhabitants.

This book was released on 2009-11-30 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Total supply of fresh water on earth far exceeds human demand. However, scarcity of water currently faced in many regions of the world is caused by two reasons. First, its availability in time and space is not equally distributed. Thus there is problem of water in the wrong place, or at the wrong time and in wrong quantities. Second, while the population growth and expanded industrial activities are increasing demands on available water resources, they also jeopardize the availability of freshwater in adequate quantities by discharge of pollutants into freshwater sources. It is at times like these, when the rising curve of water demand intersects the fluctuating curve of water availability, recycle and reuse of wastewater is seriously considered. Wastewater recycling, reuse and reclamation have been, now, accepted as appropriate ways to conserve water resources as well as to contain polluted waters from contaminating other available clean water sources. This book gives a comprehensive review on water quantity and quality, simple water supply and sanitation systems, and leads to domestic, agricultural and industrial water reuse. Thus, it will provide useful information not only to technologists but also for planners, managers, and NGOs involved in the water sector. The contribution to the book comes from a broad pool of experts, working on technology, policy, health, and economy aspects of water management. Involvement of both academics and industry personnel from developing and developed countries makes this contribution broader and useable for a wide readership.
