From Roman bridges and jumbo jets to steam engines and CD players, it is the privilege of the en gineer to combine scientific insights and technical possibilities into useful and elegant products. Engineers get a great deal of satisfaction from the usefulness and beauty of their designs. Some of these designs have a major impact on our daily lives, others enable further scientific insights or shift limits of technology. The successful engineer is familiar with the scientific basis of the field and the technology of the components, and has an eye for the envisioned applications. For example, to build an airplane, one had better understand the physics of motion, the structural properties of alu minum, and the size of passengers. And the physics of motion requires a mastery of mathematics, in particular calculus. Computers are a marvel of modern engineering. They come in a wide variety and their range of applications seems endless. One of the charac teristics that makes computers different from other engineering products is their programmability. Dishwashers have some limited programming capa is not the key part of the device. Their essential part is some bility, but it enclosed space where the dishes are stored and flushed with hot water. Computers are embedded in many different environments, but in their case the programming capability is the essential part. All computers are programmed in more or less the same way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, the authors propose a method for the formal development of parallel programs - or multiprograms as they prefer to call them. They accomplish this with a minimum of formal gear, i.e. with the predicate calculus and the well- established theory of Owicki and Gries. They show that the Owicki/Gries theory can be effectively put to work for the formal development of multiprograms, regardless of whether these algorithms are distributed or not.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first definitive treatment of an analytically complex type of electric power converter (cycloconverter) operating between ac sources and loads, where the output frequency can be independently controlled from the input frequency. Currently, there is much interest in applying cycloconverters to the special control of ac motors and to aircraft electrical systems; however, progress has been limited by lack of good technical information. This book provides an immeasurable service in that the author's theory is sufficiently detailed to allow accurate performance evaluation, design calculations, and cost projections. Moreover, he has culled an extensive, coherent bibliography from the scattered literature in the field. A cycloconverter of the naturally commutated type is essentially a pair of phase-controlled rectifiers connected in inverse parallel. Modulation of these converters to provide ac power at a lower frequency than the source frequency greatly complicates the analysis of their behavior. McMurray treats various effects of the modulation in theoretical detail and shows how the resulting equations can be used for accurate performance and design calculations. His analysis of the cycloconverter is based on the classical equations of a phase-controlled rectifier operating with continuous load current. The general algebraic form of the equations, which are applicable to many different circuit configurations, is retained throughout the book. It also presents in tabular and graphical form the results of numerical integration of corresponding rectifier equations, required in calculating many cycloconverter performance factors. This is the fourth monograph in the series Modern Electrical Technology, edited by Alexander Kusko.

The next 30 years will see the incorporation of new types of functionality onto the chip-structures that will enable the chip to reason, to sense, to act and to communicate. Micromachining technologies offer a wide range of possibilities for active and passive devices. Recent developments have produced sensors, actuators and optical systems. Many of these technologies are based on surface micromachining, which has evolved from silicon integrated circuit technology. This book is written by experts in the field. It contains useful details in design and processing and can be utilized as a reference book or as a textbook.

However, most pages are still designed for human consumption and cannot be processed by machines. This book provides a well-paced introduction to the Semantic Web. It covers a wide range of topics, from new trends (ontologies, rules) to existing technologies (Web Services and software agents) to more formal aspects (logic and inference). It includes: real-world (and complete) examples of the application of Semantic Web concepts; how the technology presented and discussed throughout the book can be extended to other application areas.
