Book excerpt: In this remarkable stock market study, one of Wall Street’s best known market analysts reveals a new technical tool he developed for gauging the pulse of the trading cycle. Called the On Balance Volume Theory, this tool tends to fill in some of the conspicuous voids in the famous Dow Theory—especially the lack of discussion and use of stock volume figures. As straightforward as a set of bridge rules, on-balance volume (OBV) denotes each buy and sell signal so that a trader can follow them without his own emotions tending to lead him astray—emotions causing most of the market misjudgements that take place. The Granville OBV method is essentially scientific, has a high degree of accuracy and has many automatic features. The reader of this book will be introduced to a method whereby he may benefit by the earlier movements of volume over price—the “early warning” radar of volume buy and sell signals.

The reality is that no trade set up or individual trader or system can identify profitable trades in advance with complete certainty. In A Year of Trading, long-time trader Peter Brandt reveals the anxieties and uncertainties of trading in a diary of his 2009 trades. He explains his thought process as he searches for trading opportunities and executes them. Each trade includes charts, an analysis of the trade, and a play-by-play account of how the trade unfolds.

Book excerpt: One of the best classical methods of technical analysis brought up to date This book offers a modern treatment of Hurst's original system of market cycle analysis. It will teach you how to get to the point where you can isolate cycles in any freely-traded financial instrument and make an assessment of their likely future course. Although Hurst's methodology can seem outwardly complex, the logic underpinning it is straightforward. With practice the skill needed to conduct a full cycle analysis quickly and effectively will become second nature. The rewards for becoming adept are high conviction trades, tight risk management and mastery of a largely non-correlated system of analysis. In this extensive step-by-step guide you will find a full description of the principal tools and techniques taught by Hurst as well as over 120 colour charts, together with tables and diagrams. The Updata and TradeStation code for all of the indicators shown is also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2011 Reprint of 1958 Fourth Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. In 1948 Robert D. Edwards and John Magee published "Technical Analysis of Stock Trends" which is widely considered to be one of the seminal works of the discipline. It is exclusively concerned with trend analysis and chart patterns and remains in use to the present. As is obvious, early technical analysis was almost exclusively the analysis of charts, because the processing power of computers was not available for statistical analysis. "Technical analysis" is a financial term used to denote a security analysis discipline for forecasting the direction of prices through the study of past market data, primarily price and volume. Behavioral economics and quantitative analysis incorporate technical analysis, which being an aspect of active management stands in contradiction to much of modern portfolio theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Point and Figure charts are one of the great secrets of the Technical Analysis world. Highly sophisticated and with a thoroughbred pedigree, they can, however, be overlooked by traders today. Jeremy du Plessis - one of the foremost Point and Figure experts in the world - returns with a fully updated second edition of this definitive guide in an effort to redress this imbalance. This second edition, with an extensive revision to the text and introduction of brand new techniques, demystifies the world of Point and Figure charting. It includes a detailed explanation of the history and development of the technique from its invention to the modern day, and covers the makeup of the chart patterns, why they are created, and how to interpret them. Throughout, readers are encouraged to understand Point and Figure charts from first principles, rather than just remember the names of a series of patterns. It is the first major work for 50 years to discuss in depth the original 1-box reversal method of Point and Figure charting and contrast it with the more popular 3-box reversal method. Further, the explanation of how to use Point and Figure charts to project targets and calculate risk-reward ratios is the most comprehensive ever seen. Also featured in the second edition are: - A step-by-step analysis of the FTSE 100 Index using the 3-box method, as well as the NASDAQ Composite Index, using the 1-box method - A detailed discussion of optimising techniques - An in-depth chapter on Analysing Point and Figure charts, extensively rewritten from the first edition - A new explanation of how Point and Figure parameters are chosen and the implications of choosing them - Two new Point and Figure construction methods never seen before - Point and Figure's contribution to market breadth, with a look at bullish percent and two brand new indicators - Full discussion of Point and Figure gaps and how they provide valuable information about the chart - Lesser known, more advanced techniques such as the use of moving averages, parabolic SAR and Bollinger Bands on Point and Figure charts - Price and volume activity histograms and how they provide information about support and resistance All this is illustrated with numerous colour charts and observations from years of trading experience. According to du Plessis, Point and Figure charts are the 'voice of the market'. This book helps you listen to, and understand, that voice. Part of the Market Technicians Association (MTA) Required Reading list.

But anyone who takes enough time to study the market and align his operations with successful trends may just as logically remove himself from the "public" class of lambs and enter this indefinite but successful class of "insiders." Book excerpt: This book can be described as 1/3 trading psychology, 1/3 risk management and 1/3 technical analysis. My early days of trading were filled with frustration, confusion and constant losses. After making some of the same mistakes over and over again I being to adapt and learned a few tricks to minimize my losses. As I began passing these tricks on to my fellow traders through my twitter account and blog (chedstrading.blogspot.com) it launched me on a path of learning and teaching. With enough time that path lead to dedicated studies of Japanese candlesticks and classical charting, and ultimately CMT certification. My career and brand have been built on "helping new traders avoid my old mistakes", and this book is a natural extension of those efforts. This book is also a natural extension of my "Complete Beginners Guide to Trading" that I wrote back in 2017 when I was undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma. I subsequently beat my cancer and wrote a book about that experience, and have since continued to grow in my journey as a trader and teacher. Building on my years of work with my twitter account, learning blog and various other writings on trading subjects, I am happy to now bring together in one place all those bits and pieces that have helped to make me a successful trader. I have personally made every single mistake mentioned in this book multiple times and therefore can speak from the heart, which I hope makes each lesson a little bit easier to learn. Thank you for reading and best of luck in your trading journey.
