Book excerpt: The first Civil War was the bloodiest conflict in American history–but the second civil war is worse. When Texas secedes from the Union, Henry and Suzanne Wilkins are as broken as the rest of America. They are breaking up, hurting, and longing for a way to make it right. Then Henry's clandestine counter-terror unit is ambushed and they must get home, crossing the bleeding country, hunted by the relentless and powerful Directors who will stop at nothing to prevent him from revealing the conspiracy that triggered the war. From the snow-swept slopes of the Rocky Mountains, to mangrove swamps deep in the Everglades back-country, Henry and Suzanne must protect what they love, facing terrible truths about themselves and those they trusted most. They are America–flawed and betrayed–but worth fighting for.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • This inspiring, exquisitely observed memoir finds hope and beauty in the face of insurmountable odds as an idealistic young neurosurgeon attempts to answer the question What makes a life worth living? NAMED ONE OF PASTE’S BEST MEMOIRS OF THE DECADE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • People • NPR • The Washington Post • Slate • Harper’s Bazaar • Time Out New York • Publishers Weekly • BookPage Finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award in Creative Nonfiction and the Books for a Better Life Award in Inspirational Memoir At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a naïve medical student “possessed,” as he wrote, “by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life” into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, the most critical place for human identity, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality. What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? These are some of the questions Kalanithi wrestles with in this profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir. Paul Kalanithi died in March 2015, while working on this book, yet his words live on as a guide and a gift to us all. “I began to realize that coming face to face with my own mortality, in a sense, had changed nothing and everything,” he wrote. “Seven words from Samuel Beckett began to repeat in my head: ‘I can’t go on. I’ll go on.’” When Breath Becomes Air is an unforgettable, life-affirming reflection on the challenge of facing death and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a brilliant writer who became both.

Book excerpt: - Abraham s Tears - is the story about a Palestinian/Muslim family living near Detroit, an Israeli/Jewish family living near LA, an Australian/Christian and German/Atheist-Bahai families who, without knowing each other, independently arrive in the same place in Jerusalem, at the same time and experience the same horrific event. The survivors follow Mohandas Gandhi advice, An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind and seek to work to live together in peace rather than seek retaliation or retribution. Jamil Mansour and Jacob Goodman each learn something about their heritage which causes them to reassess exactly what religion is to them. Because of a biology/genetics college course Jamil who grew up believing he was a Shiite learns he was actually born a Sunni which he hated and repeatedly badmouthed. Jacob, who had been Bar Mitzvah and was now serving in the IDF, needed to have his blood tested to see if was a suitable bone marrow donor because his sister had aplastic anemia and learns he was adopted. He had been born to an Arab Muslim family! While the conventional wisdom that the Middle East conflict is either due to the ethnicity differences between Israelis and Palestinians or religious differences between Jews and Muslims, or both, a reasoned argument is set forth that Middle East conflict is neither an issue of ethnicity nor of religion but rather a matter that one party has something that they both want.

Book excerpt: In this historical accounting of the great patriarch, Meyer concentrates on the development of Abraham’s faith through the difficult times and successes and victories of his life. Abraham’s trust in God was strong when he left his father’s homeland; He learned even more fully to rely on God rather than himself, which is why he became the father of faith. Meyer delivers to his readers Abraham’s life with detailed attention to archaeological discoveries and cultural customs. However, he is also very focused on the spiritual principles for readers. The outcome is a complex portrait of one of the most significant characters in the Bible, a devotional biography for those who are “by faith, children of Abraham.”

Abraham and Sarah is a masterful historical drama from the moment that Abraham strides into the pagan temple to rescue Sarah. The couple sets out in search of the blessings God had promised: abundant fertile land and decedents more plentiful than the stars. But years of wandering bring the couple to Egypt, where once again Abraham convinces Sarah that as sister and brother surely they will pass safely through the territory. But Pharaoh takes Sarah into his harem, where she befriends Pharaoh’s daughter, Hagar. Together the three are ordered to leave. Years of barrenness have embittered Sarah, and she hatches a plan: Hagar must become the vessel for the child God has promised. Ishmael is born to Hagar, and jealousy is born in Sarah’s heart. But God had a plan and He was right all along. This miracle unfolds with historical authenticity, leaving the reader with a better understanding of the ancient world and the life-changing faith of Abraham and Sarah.

Book excerpt: This first verse-by-verse commentary on the Greek text of the Testament of Abraham places the work within the history of both Jewish and Christian literature. It emphasizes the literary artistry and comedic nature of the Testament, brings to the task of interpretation a mass of comparative material, and establishes that, although the Testament goes back to a Jewish tale of the first or second century CE, the Christian elements are much more extensive than has previously been realized. The commentary further highlights the dependence of the Testament upon both Greco-Roman mythology and the Jewish Bible. This should be the standard commentary for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reuniting the Children of Abraham is a powerful, multimedia peace initiative created with Jewish, Christian and Muslim families to combat the fear, bigotry and bullying that fuels violence. The multicultural project described in this book includes inspiring true stories and educational materials that flow from the ancient story of Abraham, a patriarch in all three faiths. Just as Abraham’s own children were reunited, this project is a model for calling these vast families of faith toward building peaceful new relationships. The project was the focus of a CBS network special documentary, which pointed out: “Abraham, of the Old Testament, was the founding patriarch of a new, monotheistic faith, which included Jews and later Christians and Muslims. One of his two sons is historically tied to the founding of Judaism, the other to the founding of Islam.” CBS Executive Producer and Director of that special, John P. Blessington, said, “This project is a powerful experience that gives hope to the idea of these three religions being able to find their common heritage as a reason for mutual religious respect and spiritual healing in the future.” Now, the source materials for this project, which range from shared prayers to true stories of young participants, are appearing in book form so that individual readers and small groups will be inspired to carry this kind of interfaith work into their communities. The texts in the book include educational material developed by scholars at the University of Michigan as well as the Michigan State University School of Journalism. The book also draws on wisdom from the Bible as well as the Quran. Reporting for The Detroit Free Press, David Crumm wrote about the urgency of this program, which has been presented in several formats in communities across the country. David wrote, “Once we rediscover our shared origin story in the ancient family of Abraham—Jews, Christians and Muslims living today must face the powerful truth that God still is calling us to reunite our family.” In Minnesota, Muslim community leader and mother Arshia Khan helped to bring the program to Duluth. Arshia said, “God created us for a purpose. We need to learn to live with each other. We believe in the same God. If our children see us doing the right thing, they learn about love and respect for each other.” The book closes with recommendations for further reading as well as links to additional resources available online.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few treatments of the death of Jesus Christ have made a point of accounting for the gruesome, degrading, public manner of his death by crucifixion, a mode of execution so loathsome that the ancient Romans never spoke of it in polite society. Rutledge probes all the various themes and motifs used by the New Testament evangelists and apostolic writers to explain the meaning of the cross of Christ. She shows how each of the biblical themes contributes to the whole, with the Christus Victor motif and the concept of substitution sharing pride of place along with Irenaeus's recapitulation model.
