Book excerpt: Teaching the Way: Using the Principles of The Art of War to Teach Composition uses the insight into human nature provided by Sun Tzu in The Art of War to help composition teachers improve not only the quality of their teaching, but their satisfaction with teaching. Specifically, this book is designed to help teachers: - acquire the right attitudes to motivate them to succeed, - learn how to present themselves to students in a way that engenders trust and encourages active participation, - develop teaching methods that encourage student motivation (and avoid those that do the opposite), - understand how to best use discipline and reward to keep students engaged, - teach classes in a cooperative way that leads students, not just the teacher, to provide energy. Nelson's book is based on the belief that students need to have productive, positive experiences in composition classes to give themselves a chance to succeed academically, in their careers, and in life. His philosophy was developed over years of teaching and his constant quest to make the experiences in the classroom better for both him and his students. This book can help teachers, both new and experienced, apply the wisdom of Sun Tzu's methods to transform their composition classes to be more positive, impactful, and enjoyable. Readers will appreciate the conversational, accessible tone Nelson uses to offer practical advice about creating assignments, developing classroom strategies, using groups, managing grading, and more.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Practice in the Teaching of Composition In preparing these chapters, my hope has been to offer suggestions which might be immediately useful to every teacher of composition. There are many admirable studies of the arts of Speaking and writing; many useful texts in composition for the children, but few books which deal with the teacher's problems in presenting the subject. As it becomes daily more obvious that boys and girls are to be taught to speak and write not indirectly by the study of grammar but directly by the practice of composition, it 'is increasingly important that solutions for some of these problems be found. If the'principles enunci ated and the suggestions made here point out the way to any teacher, they will have justified themselves. I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to the Women Teachers' Club of the City of Edmonton for whom these lectures were originally prepared and in whose interest the book was begun, and also to Mr. G. F. Mcnally without whose encouragement and advice it would never have been finished.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-08-10 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN writing this book my main purpose is to set forth a way of thinking about art. The most that such a book can do is to direct the thoughts, awaken a sense of power and point to ways of controlling it. The principles of art teaching here outlined might be illustrated in other ways and with better examples. I hope the reader will see how each chapter can be developed into many sets of lessons. The progressions can be varied, materials changed, lessons amplified and different designs chosen, providing there is no sacrifice of essentials. The book is based upon my experience in painting and teaching for more than twenty years. The first edition of Composition was published in 1899. In this revision I have made many additions and used new illustrations without departing from theory or principles. Composition was chosen as a title because that word expresses the idea upon which the method here presented is founded - the "putting together" of lines, masses and colors to make a harmony. Design, understood in its broad sense, is a better word, but popular usage has restricted it to decoration. Composition, building up of harmony, is the fundamental process in all the fine arts. I hold that art should be approached through composition rather than through imitative drawing. The many different acts and processes combined in a work of art may be attacked and mastered one by one, and thereby a power gained to handle them unconsciously when they must be used together. If a few elements can be united harmoniously, a step has been taken toward further creation...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than two millennia ago the famous Chinese general Sun Tzu wrote the classic work on military strategy, The Art of War. Now, in a new edition of Sun Tzu and the Art of Business, Mark McNeilly shows how Sun Tzu's strategic principles can be applied to twenty-first century business. Here are two books in one: McNeilly's synthesis of Sun Tzu's ideas into six strategic principles for the business executive, plus the text of Samuel B. Griffith's popular translation of The Art of War. McNeilly explains how to gain market share without inciting competitive retaliation, how to attack competitors' weak points, and how to maximize market information for competitive advantage. He demonstrates the value of speed and preparation in throwing the competition off-balance, employing strategy to beat the competition, and the need for character in leaders. Lastly, McNeilly presents a practical method to put Sun Tzu's principles into practice. By using modern examples throughout the book from Google, Zappos, Amazon, Dyson, Aflac, Singapore Airlines, Best Buy, the NFL, Tata Motors, Starbucks, and many others, he illustrates how, by following the wisdom of history's most respected strategist, executives can avoid the pitfalls of management fads and achieve lasting competitive advantage.

Book excerpt: An extraordinary detailed manual on statecraft and the science of living by one of classical India's greatest minds; Kautilya; also known as Chanakya and Vishnugupta; wrote the Arthashastra not later than 150 AD though the date has not been conclusively established. Legend has it that he was either a Brahmin from Kerala or from north India; however; it is certain that Kautilya was the man who destroyed the Nanda dynasty and installed Chandragupta Maurya as the King of Magadha. A master strategist who was well-versed in the Vedas and adept at creating intrigues and devising political stratagems; Kautilya's genius is reflected in his Arthashastra which is the most comprehensive treatise of statecraft of classical times. The text contains fifteen books which cover numerous topics viz.; the King; a complete code of law; foreign policy; secret and occult practices and so on. The Arthashastra is written mainly in prose but also incorporates 380 shlokas. Artha; literally wealth; is one of four supreme aims prescribed by Hindu tradition. However; it has a much wider significance and the material well-being of individuals is just a part of it. In accordance with this; Kautilya's Arthashastra maintains that the state or government of a country has a vital role to play in maintaining the material status of both the nation and its people. Therefore; a significant part of the Arthashastra has to do with the science of economics. When it deals with the science of politics; the Arthashastra describes in detail the art of government in its widest sense—the maintenance of law and order as also of an efficient administrative machinery.
