Book excerpt: The sociopolitical turn in mathematics education has impacted K-12 classrooms for over a decade. As the drive to expand the influence continues, it becomes vital for teacher educators (TEs) to attend to social justice education with pre-service teachers (PSTs), specifically those in mathematics methods courses. Incorporating pedagogy such as teaching mathematics for social justice (TMfSJ) into these courses is a first step. However, TEs must also direct their attention to in what way their students' lived experiences, positioning and envisioned teacher identity impact the manner in which they take up TMfSJ. Further, TEs must consciously support many PSTs in the emotional process of becoming critical educators. This leads me to wondering how attending to the figured world of TMfSJ in a mathematics methods course can provide TEs with information that will help them support their PSTs in having maximum opportunities for developing social justice education dispositions. Further, I question PSTs' commitment to the tenets of social justice based on how they complete choice assignments specifically designed to raise commitments to critical perspectives. The following study investigated a mathematics methods course for elementary and special education PSTs aimed to promote TMfSJ. It explored the figured world of TMfSJ and focused on 3 PSTs who engaged in that figured world in distinctive ways. Further, a framework was developed. It combined tenets of TMfSJ and the three 'As': (a) awareness, (b) acceptance, and (c) action. It looked at how use of choice assignments impacted PSTs' awareness of societal inequities, acceptance of their potential role in becoming agents for change, and their willingness to take action. This study found that multiple storylines occur when PSTs participate in the figured world of TMfSJ. Further, it describes three archetypes, (a) the conscripted soldier, (b) the aspiring crusader and (c) the audacious warrior. This study also evidenced the importance of PSTs acceptance of the tenets of TMfSJ before moving into action.
