Book excerpt: Abstract: With communication being one of the most prominent skills that children with autism struggle to master, several ABA techniques have been identified as an effective method of early intervention for students with autism. Nonetheless, studies are limited in the area of intraverbal behavior (answering questions). Only two single case research studies, Finkel and Williams (2001) and Vedora, Meunier, and Mackay (2009) have examined which prompt method, echoic or textual, is most effective in teaching students with autism intraverbal behavior. There is a need to further examine how young children with autism respond to echoic and textural prompts when being taught intraverbal behavior. The purpose of this study was to assess which method of prompting, echoic or textual, was more effective and efficient in teaching intraverbals to students with autism in a special education setting. The research questions are: Is there a functional relationship between echoic prompting and intraverbal behavior, and textural prompting and intraverbal behavior? Which method of prompting, echoic or textual, is most effective and efficient in eliciting intraverbal behavior? Which, if either, method of prompting increases the chance of maintenance of intraverbal behavior? The results show that a functional relationship was determined to exist between echoic prompting and intraverbal behavior, and textural prompting and intraverbal behavior. In addition, each prompt method was found to equally effective and efficient. This study found that maintenance was established for intraverbal responding, and that neither prompt method increased the chance of maintenance as compared to the other.

For example, when teaching verbal behavior specific behavior objectives must target each verbal operant. However, this differs from how typically developing children learn, that is, they learn indirectly and derive relations among stimuli. Verbal behavior, as defined by Skinner (1957), is behavior whose reinforcement is mediated by a listener that is trained to do so. This project reviews two methods of teaching children with ASD derived intraverbal behavior: instructional feedback and stimulus equivalence procedures. Instructional feedback is the inclusion of additional stimuli in teaching trials, the exposure of which decreases training time for those additional stimuli. Stimulus equivalence procedures build upon the work of Sidman (1994) to present related stimuli with the aim of promoting emergent intraverbals. Implications of this literature are explored. Finally, a training procedure for supervisors and instructors is proposed based upon Behavioral Skills Training.

These skills can include verbal behavior such as tacting, manding, and intraverbal behavior. Research suggests that intraverbal behavior can be taught using echoic to intraverbal transfer-of-control procedures. Researchers have demonstrated that peer-mediated interventions can be successfully used to teach students with ASD social and communication skills. This study used a multiple probe across participants design to determine if a peer with ASD could be trained to implement an echoic to intraverbal transfer-of-control intervention, and if that intervention would be effective in increasing intraverbal behavior in students with ASD. Results indicate that the peer effectively implemented the intervention, and that the target students learned and maintained intraverbal behavior. The paper will also discuss implications and direction for future research, including testing for generalization of skills, additional intraverbal interventions that can be implemented, and using peers to teach more complex intraverbal skills.
