Still another one discusses, in lectures that are printed, the social phases of Education in the School and Home. Here are several chapters of experience - Classical, Euro pean, American, recently presented to the public at large by members of the faculty. This Teachers College is far more than a local foundation. It is resorted to by many school officers from a distance. Quite recently in a southern city it became important to establish a training place for the teachers of that large community. The first thing was to send those who were to be in charge of the school to the Teachers College for suggestion and guidance. At the present moment in another southern city there is a great normal institute fashioned upon the older models and the man agers of it are considering whether it is not possible to recast its work and its courses of instruction upon the models here set forth. Not long ago a party of southern gentlemen, eager to awaken their compatriots to a love of public schools, came here for inspiration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus of the History of Education The present volume is the outgrowth of several years' experience in the use of the syllabus method in teaching the history of education. The syllabi were originally prepared in a somewhat elaborate form for use in graduate classes at Yale University. The teaching method used in the course at, Yale combined extensive library reading with lectures. Subsequently the syllabi were revised and to some degree abridged for my classes in the Brooklyn Training School for Teachers, where they have been of service in directing and organizing the students' reading. They are now published in the belief that they will fill a wider field of usefulness in normal school and college classes. The school houses were public property and were rented to the schoolmasters, of whom there were two; one for gymnastic, and the other for music; and to both the pupil went every day. Higher education began at about fourteen, and continued until the young man reached his majority. Book Synopsis Teaching High-School Latin by : Josiah Bethea Game
Download or read book Teaching High-School Latin written by Josiah Bethea Game and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching High-School Latin: A Handbook This little book represents a revision and enlargement of the Handbook for high-school Teachers of Latin which was published as a bulletin of the Missouri State Normal School, Cape Girardeau, in 1907, while the writer was connected with that institution as professor of Latin and Greek. That bulletin had a surprising popularity. An edition of five thousand was distributed within a short time, mainly in response to requests from all parts of the country. Even after a lapse of more than eight years, calls for Copies are frequently received. An earnest effort has been made to prepare a practical manual that will meet some of the immediate needs of the young teacher of Latin. The plans proposed represent actual experience in the high school, the normal school, and the college. They have been tested thoroughly and found effective. They do not represent a final solution of all the problems of the young teacher, but they do represent the best contribution the writer can now make to the cause of better teaching in our schools. Some of the suggestions here given were made originally by Professor C. U. Clark, director of the American Acad emy, Rome, Italy. My obligation to him is very great. Professors G. J. Laing and F. J. Miller, of the University of Chicago, did me the kindness to read the manuscript and make suggestions which have added very much to the value of the book. Their help is fully appreciated. Locke, in his generation, had exposed some of its humbugs in England Rousseau did his part in France but before Pestalozzi's day, and long after, education in Europe was a sort of quackery. The monitorial systems of Bell and Lancaster had to be carried out in baskets full and buried the Gradgrinds and Ichabod Cranes ceased to be our ideal school masters the three R.'s failed to complete the school curriculum; and an ability to translate in the class-room a well-conned passage from Cicero or Homer ceased to be the acme of the college course. The rubbish has been only partially removed; and we have but just reached the foundations on which education, as a science, rests. Book Synopsis The American College in Relation to Liberal Education (Classic Reprint) by : David Jayne Hill
Download or read book The American College in Relation to Liberal Education (Classic Reprint) written by David Jayne Hill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American College in Relation to Liberal Education The University of Rochester had its beginning in a liberal and progressive apprehension of educational needs. It was distinctly seen by its founders that an atmosphere of human activity and social refinement is needed to stimulate intellectual culture and invigorate moral character; and, accordingly, this beautiful and prosperous city, which has since become even more conspicuously a centre of elevating influences, was chosen as its seat. Far enough West to feel the thrill of enterprise and to share in the optimistic hopes of Western life without being subject to its provincialisms; far enough East to enjoy the benefits of our oldest American civilization without being influenced by its archaic customs and colonial traditions - Rochester, on the principal highway between the great lakes and the Atlantic, satisfies all the conditions of an ideal university town. The company of men who have shaped the destinies of this institution was originally formed by the selective power of a common conviction that a great opportunity creates a great obligation; and the corporation has since been recruited from among those who shared in this conviction. The not inconsiderable resources which years of generosity and prudence have accumulated are mainly the continued tokens of the satisfaction and perseverance with which the fathers of the enterprise themselves and their colleagues in munificence have regarded their undertaking.
