Abstract: Abstract This study investigates the effects of an inductive approach to second language grammar instruction on a group of average achieving learners in a local secondary school. It adopts an action research design, in which I, being the English language teacher of the group of learners, set an inductive teaching programme on two selected grammar items (conditionals types one and two), and implemented that programme during normal English lessons with the group. To determine their gain in grammatical knowledge after the programme, I asked those learners to complete a pre-teaching and a post-teaching cloze test on the grammar items concerned. In addition, their attitudes towards the inductive instruction approach were elicited through a follow-up questionnaire and a semi-structured group interview. Finally, the learners' patterns of cognitive engagement with grammar practice tasks in which the grammar items concerned had been presented through either an inductive or a deductive approach were explored. Findings indicate that the average achievers are able to learn English grammar through an inductive approach, although their attitudes towards it vary. Besides, both similarities and differences are identified in how they engage cognitively with the two types of grammar practice tasks. These findings suggest that there may be a large potential for language teachers who are used to adopting a deductive approach to teaching grammar to consider integrating the inductive counterpart into their daily practice. iv DOI: 10.5353/th_b3532034 Subjects: English language - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong Junior high school students - China - Hong Kong - Langauge

The paperback edition provides a detailed account of current approaches to the education of teachers of second languages. It offers valuable ideas on the observation and supervision of classrooms, on self-evaluation by teachers, and on teaching itself. Its emphasis reflects the shift in orientation from teacher training to teacher education, in which teachers are involved in developing their own theories of teaching, understanding the nature of teacher decision making, and developing strategies for critical self-evaluation. The book is aimed at teachers, teacher educators, and workshop facilitators involved both in pre-service and in-service education of teachers of second and foreign languages.

Book excerpt: Recent SLA research recognizes the necessity of attention to grammar and demonstrates that form-focused instruction is especially effective when it is incorporated into a meaningful communicative context. Designed specifically for second-language teachers, this text identifies and explores the various options for integrating a focus on grammar and a focus on communication in classroom contexts and offers concrete examples of teaching activities for each option. Each chapter includes a description of the option, its theoretical and empirical background, examples of activities illustrating in a non-technical manner how it can be implemented in the classroom, questions for reflection, and a list of useful resources that teachers can consult for further information.
